This X12 Transaction Set contains the format and establishes the data contents of the Rail
Carrier Waybill Interchange Transaction Set (417) for use within the context of an Electronic
Data Interchange (EDI) environment. The transaction set can be used to provide the rail carrier
with detailed movement instructions pertinent to a rail carrier shipment and is used by all Class I
rail carriers in the United States and Canada.
This transaction set contains co-loading functionality that not all carriers support. Contact trading
partners prior to use.

full commodity descriptions, package codes and piece counts of the
smallest exterior packaging unit are required. The corresponding
Standard Transportation Commodity Code (STCC) code must be used
in the Description, Marks and Numbers segments. Also the
Harmonized System (HS) code, if available should be passed in an N9
segment utilizing a code value of HS. This information must be
passed to the border crossing carrier as received by the origin carrier.
If manifest information is being provided directly to a Customs
Agency, by a party other than the border crossing carrier, then these
requirements may be modified by mutual agreement between the
border crossing carrier and the manifesting party.

2 M1204 is 5-digit numeric census schedule K. It is the foreign port of
destination if M1201 is 62 or 63.
3 M1207 identifies the carrier to whom liability is transferred.
4 M1212 is the Food and Drug Administration prior notification requirement
indicator. A Y indicates the shipper has advised the commodity is subject
to the prior notification requirement. An N indicates the commodity is not

Syntax:
1 One loop may be nested contained within another loop, provided the inner
nested loop terminates before the outer loop. When specified by the
standard setting body as mandatory, this segment, in combination with
LS, must be used. It is not to be used if not specifically set forth for use.
The loop identifier in the loop header and trailer must be identical. The
value for the identifier is the loop ID of the required loop beginning
segment. The loop ID number is given on the transaction set diagram in the
appropriate ASC X12 version/release.
