Purpose

Rwandan students and teachers will gain access to personal, professional, and academic
opportunities through English and gender awareness in the school and larger community.

Goal 1: Improve Learning
Rwandan Students will improve English language proficiency, raise academic success, and
develop leadership skills in the English classroom or in extracurricular activities in English.
Objective 1.1: Improve Achievement and Participation in English Class
By 2016, 4101 Rwandan students will show improved achievement and confidence in English
and increased participation in the English language classroom.
Activities
Each year 31 PCVs and their partner (s) will
1. Teach 1240 students in English learning in their classes so that they demonstrate

increased achievement in English skills.


2. Support 1240 students in critical thinking so that they engage in more structured
decision making, planning, problem solving and generate a series of options before
choosing the best, based on analysis.

3. Support 1240 students in English learning so that students participate more actively in

lessons, classroom interactions, activities, and have fewer absences or late arrivals.

Objective 1.2: Improve Student Achievement, Participation, and Leadership Skills Through
Extracurricular Activities
By 2016, 3100 Rwandan students will show improved achievement and confidence in English
and increased participation and/or leadership skills in an English club, camp, or other
extracurricular activities.
Activities
Each year 31 Volunteers and their partner (s)

1. Will support English extracurricular activities so that 620 students participating in the
activity demonstrate increased use of English both in their classes and real life
situations.
2. Will support English extracurricular activities so that 620 students participating in the
activity demonstrate improved confidence, motivation, or participation through more
actively engaging in the events group interactions, activities, and demonstrating
willingness to take on more specific responsibilities in the activity or in school (including
peer teaching, tutoring, or homework.
3. Will support English extracurricular activities so that 620 students participating in the
activity will exhibit leadership traits, such as exhibiting a visionary outlook;
demonstrating a drive to see things through; becoming a more effective communicator,
motivator, planner, or creative thinker; setting examples for others; supporting other
students in need or organizing activities and events for other students.

Objective 2.1: Improve Teachers Communication Skills

By 2016, at least 144 teachers will demonstrate improvement in English teaching and teaching
in English
Activities
Each year 16 Volunteers and their partners will

1. Engage 32 teachers so that they reflect mutually on experience to change their teaching
practices, talk shop about teaching English and teaching in English (that is, discuss the
craft of teaching), increase occasions of co-teaching and co planning (or time devoted
to it), participate in a greater number of informal teacher professional development
sessions or a greater number of formal professional development events in English
(such as seminars, workshops, or other informal or formal professional development
sessions.
2. Engage 32 teachers so that they carry out a higher proportion of classroom procedural
language in English (that is, they use English to manage the classfor example,
instructions are given in English).

Objective 2.2: Improve English Teachers Instructional Practice and Resource development
By 2016, at least 100 Rwandan teachers will implement more gender equitable student centered English

Each year 25 Volunteers and their partners will
1. Work with at least 25 teachers so that they engage in new techniques for teaching language
skills, including grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation or functions, or more effectively apply
established language learning principles.
2. Engage at least 25 teachers so that they utilize practices that permit classroom trust, respect,
and vary instructional activities that engage different senses (including hands-on learning).
3. Will engage at least 25 teachers so that they create new teaching and learning aids, use
available resources, or develop new means to track, catalogue, or store those resources and
make them accessible to students and teachers.

Goal 3: Improve the Community

Objective 3.1: School Community Projects

By 2016, 310 Rwandan community members, including teachers, students, staff, and
administration, will participate in activities that enhance the school environment and/or
operations and support student learning and gender awareness.

Each year, 20 Volunteers and their community counterparts will


1. Engage 30 school community members so that they participate more in improved
administrative procedures, such as computer-based class schedule or grade calculation
for English teachers; increased student learning opportunities through tutoring systems
or school English clubs, or other after school programs.
