Purpose
Rwandan students and teachers will gain access to personal, professional, and academic
opportunities through English and gender awareness in the school and larger community.

Rwandan Students will improve English language proficiency, raise academic success, and
develop leadership skills in the English classroom or in extracurricular activities in English.

By 2016, 4101 Rwandan students will show improved achievement and confidence in English
and increased participation in the English language classroom.

activity demonstrate increased use of English both in their classes and real life
situations.

Activities
Each year 16 Volunteers and their partners will
1. Engage 32 teachers so that they reflect mutually on experience to change their teaching
practices, talk shop about teaching English and teaching in English (that is, discuss the
craft of teaching), increase occasions of co-teaching and co planning (or time devoted
to it), participate in a greater number of informal teacher professional development
sessions or a greater number of formal professional development events in English
(such as seminars, workshops, or other informal or formal professional development
sessions.
2. Engage 32 teachers so that they carry out a higher proportion of classroom procedural
language in English (that is, they use English to manage the classfor example,
instructions are given in English).

Objective 2.2: Improve English Teachers Instructional Practice and Resource development
By 2016, at least 100 Rwandan teachers will implement more gender equitable student centered English
teaching.
Activities
Each year 25 Volunteers and their partners will
1. Work with at least 25 teachers so that they engage in new techniques for teaching language
skills, including grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation or functions, or more effectively apply
established language learning principles.
2. Engage at least 25 teachers so that they utilize practices that permit classroom trust, respect,
and vary instructional activities that engage different senses (including hands-on learning).
3. Will engage at least 25 teachers so that they create new teaching and learning aids, use
available resources, or develop new means to track, catalogue, or store those resources and
make them accessible to students and teachers.
