FURTHER CLARIFICATION TO ENGINEERING BULLETIN 282

Please be aware that the checks described in Engineering Bulletin

282 (copied below) are to be carried out on All handsets returned
for repair.
When the customer perceived fault information suggests it is likely
that there is a bad joint on the Cobba device (as detailed in the list
of symptoms in the original bulletin below), then the Cobba should
be replaced as a precaution regardless of the Cobba test results.
If the fault description is not sufficiently detailed, or is limited to a
fault code with no specific end user description, then the checks
described in the bulletin should be carried out and the Cobba should
only be replaced if the tests indicate that the Cobba should be
replaced.
Original Engineering Bulletin 282
If the end-user complains of following symptoms:
- dropping calls
- loosing service
- poor receiver sensitivity
- unstable signal strength bar

the reason can be:

A. Poor connection of COBBA (N240) pin1
B. Oxidised H1 pad of COBBA
C. Broken connection of RX/TX switch (Z900) terminal plating
A. Poor Connection of COBBA (N240) pin1
In service point following symptoms can be found:
- high BER even at high RF signal levels (e.g. Class 2 BER >5% at
-60 dBm)
- frequency error is very large (e.g. frequency error >2 kHz)
- large Phase error (e.g. RMS phase error > 10)
- 400 kHz switching spectrum exceeds limits
When the phone is connected to a tester and a call is set up, by
twisting the phone cautiously one of the symptoms can occur in
both 900 MHz and 1800 MHz bands.

Make a call to a radio communication tester and monitor VCON signal

with oscilloscope. If the VCON signal varies when mechanical force is
applied, it is likely that the soldering of N240 pin1 is broken.

B. Oxidised H1 pad of COBBA

In service point following symptoms can be found:
1) in call mode
- high Bit error (BER = 10% and higher)
- large frequency error (>1000 Hz)

- phase error from 10% to 20%

2) in test mode
- RSSI readings in WinTesla are e.g. in -110 dBm range (normal: level
of generator)
- 400 kHz switching spectrum exceeds limits

Repair action
Clean the grounding pad H1 of N240. Note: Make sure that optimal
equipments are used.
The best way to remove the oxidised coating is to use soldering
station (e.g. METCAL MX500) with a flat end soldering tip
(e.g.SMTC0167). With above-mentioned station/soldertip you have
reliable fixed temperature of 357C which is not harmful to PCB.

For best result:

1. Apply some Flux with a Mini Fluxer Pen (e.g. Multicore X32-10I).
With harder brush tip, coating can be loosen a bit, when rubbing
over the oxidised pad.

2. Hold the soldertip (with a bit fresh tin at the tip) on the pad for
approximately 5 to 10 seconds (in this time the station heats up the
soldertip by regulating the power) as long as a contact with the PCB
is established.
3. Slide with revolving motion over the pad several times
4. Desolder the pad with solder-wick also by holding the tip onto the
wick for a few seconds - always without pressure to the PCB
If the first attempt was not successful, repeat the procedure.
Note: Pay attention that all coating on the pad will be removed! If
surplus remains, same errors will occur
C. Broken connection of the RX/TX switch (Z900) terminal
plating
In the service point following symptoms can be found:
- High BER, even at high RF signal levels around -90 dBm (often this
will the case only in either 900 MHz or 1800 MHz band)
- TX power significantly (e.g. 10 dB) too low
Note: Characteristically, if indication of large TX insertion loss is
observed in one of the bands, there are no RX problems, and vice
versa.
When the phone is connected to a tester and a call is set up, by
twisting the phone cautiously one of the symptoms can occur in 900
MHz or 1800 MHz bands, depending on which terminal pin is broken
(cracked).
If Frequency error is not detected, disassemble the phone and place
it in repair jig.
By using WinTesla (note: remember to select RX or TX and proper
channel depending on which terminal to check), set the phone to
local mode and check:
the following -

- RX 900

Insertion loss
- TX 900
Insertion loss
- RX 1800
Insertion loss
- TX 1800
Insertion loss

from "ANT" to "GSM_RX"

from "GSM_TX" to "ANT"
from "ANT" to "DCS_RX"
from "DCS_TX" to "ANT"

If insertion loss (greater than 5 dB in any path) is seen, inspect the

platings on the side and the top of the Z900. If the connection is
broken/cracked (see picture below), replace the component. Do NOT
attempt to fix the crack by soldering the defective component.
