ISSUE: PLAYING TRUANT AMONG PUPILS
1.0 PROBLEM
I have observed that my pupils are playing truant and usually they will come to
school 2 days only in a week. The pupils that absent are always the same
persons and they gave the same reasons while smiling to the teacher. It shows
that they absent without a true reason and they do lie to the class teacher.
Truancy is also considered as a disciplinary problem that has been going on for
years. This issue should be overcome; otherwise it will tarnish the school image
and reputation.
2.0 PROBLEMS ANALYSIS
Truancy means being absent from school without a valid reason. In my view,
students play truant for number of reasons. Most of them play truant because of
negative peer influence. They follow their friends who skip school. Besides that,
financial problems can also cause a student to stay away from school. This
explains why students who play truant are mainly from the lower income groups.
Moreover, learning problems is another cause of truancy. Students who find
academic subjects difficult or boring would prefer to play truant. Regular school
attendance is also important for academic success. If a student often plays
truant, he may fail in his examinations. Thus, students who play truant also have
low self-esteem and become social misfits.
3.0 SUGGESTIONS
Some of my suggestions are the pupils have to be monitored by teachers at their
school. Discipline teacher has to take responsibility in this case. Besides that, the
teacher should also give warnings to them such as tell them that they will be

handed over to the Police if they are found playing truant. In addition, school
administrators must play a role to send all this problematic pupils for counselling
with the hope some of them will realise the effect of mixing with wrong
companies and hoping to change for the better.
4.0 DURATION TIME
I could not overcome this issue during this practicum session. Maybe it can be
proceed by the school teachers. Moreover, I could help the teachers during the
internship program that will be on July.
5.0 UPCOMING ACTION
The school administrators should hold some interesting school activities. This will
attract the pupils to attend school and stop playing truant. The school
administrators can also organize awareness campaign for the students at school
to prevent the truancy problems occurring and hold some motivational talks.
Lastly, the discipline teacher should meet their parents and have dialogue with
them about the problem.
6.0 CONCLUSION
In conclusion, I hope the truancy problem which is happening in schools
especially from the last classes can be cut down with the involvement of all
hands. We should make the pupils make their school as their second home and
truancy problem will surely be under control.
