Description

A grove of almond trees blended with sun and snow
images, created in Adobe Photoshop.
Date

2/14/2015

Course/Instructor

COMM 130 Visual Design / Cory Kerr
Objectives

Create a unified layout with consistent theme and
message using two or more blended images, including at
least one mask.
Process

A picture of the sun was applied over the empty sky
in the original picture, and a layer mask was used to get
rid of everything but the sun and a beam of light. A picture
of snow was lightly applied to the picture in order to add
texture and further develop the clouds. The last step was in
applying the words and then adding low-opacity white behind
the black letters and low-opacity black behind the pink
letters in blossomed in order to make them easier to read.

Brochure

A brochure for the fictional company
LumoSys Technologies, created in Adobe InDesign.
Date

Course/Instructor

COMM 130 Visual Design / Cory Kerr
Objectives

Create an original logo and body text for a
brochure. Include images, including one modified in
photoshop, and text wrap.
Process

Sketches were done to get initial layout.
Sections were divided by ruler lines and then gray
spaces were set down to mark areas that would
be cut out. Circles and lines were then set down.
Pictures were Placed in the circles in order to crop
them automatically. Text was added. Various color
schemes were then tested, and the total result was
polished up.

Imaging
Description

A demonstration of photography and image
editing skills, created in Adobe Photoshop and
Microsoft Word.
Date

Course/Instructor

COMM 130 Visual Design / Cory Kerr
Objectives

Adjust image levels, saturation, & other tools to
alter a photo and use in design with accompanying
text.
Process

Several pictures were taken with a digital
camera. The best was edited in Photoshop for picture
quality, then put into Word, where the Remove
Background function was used to quickly crop the
non-essentials, after which the image was returned to
Photoshop and the rest produced. The red halo and
facehugger help to draw attention to the figure.

Logos
Description

Three logo variations for the same fictional nonprofit,
created in Adobe Illustrator.
Date

Course/Instructor

COMM 130 Visual Design / Cory Kerr
Objectives

Create three unique, original logos that will appeal to
the intended audience, using only Illustrator tools.
Process

Clip art of a chair was traced over with anchor points.
The legs were drawn down, especially the leftmost leg,
which had a round shape added to the end to make a
musical note. Rounded rectangles were used to create the
hands of the second logo, and the leg and rounded end in
the first logo were reused for the note. For the third logo
Lucida was used for the base of the larger letters. Additional
shapes were added to thicken certain lines and dash through
the C in order to make both resemble musical notes.

HTML / Webpage
Description

A webpage designed to display and describe a logo
of my own design, created in Notepad++.
Date

Course/Instructor

COMM 130 Visual Design / Cory Kerr
Objectives

Using HTML and CSS, create a webpage to display
a previously-created logo.
Process

After validating the webpage in its html-only form,
I added CSS and proceeded to match the page to the
preexisting color scheme. Gold was originally going to be
used for the borders and header banner, and then for
text in the header. Even after replacing the former with
black, however, the gold still didnt fit anywhere and was
replaced by white.

Event Ad

Course/Instructor

COMM 130 Visual Design / Cory Kerr
Objectives

Using a scanned, high-quality image, create a
design for non-profit charity event.
Process

Asymmetry was used in the relation between
the banjos, which causes the eye to run up and
down the two. Some of the formatting was also
influenced by the relation of the text tothe lefthand
banjo. Complementary color was used not only to
make the banjos stand out but also to highlight
information or noteworthy information.

Letterhead
Description

Letterhead displaying a newly-designed logo,
created in Adobe Illustrator.
Date

Course/Instructor

COMM 130 Visual Design / Cory Kerr
Objectives

Create a new logo and design a consistent
layout for a letterhead design. Keep the design
simple and include contact information.
Process

The sun was created by making a circle shape
and chopping it in half. Rays were created with
rectangles and rotated around a single point. The
sun, with its green base (representing the horizon)
was the logo proper, and was turned into a 5%
opacity watermark at the bottom. A solid line was
set behind the horizon to stretch across the page to
connect to the contact information.

Business Card

Course/Instructor

COMM 130 Visual Design / Cory Kerr
Objectives

Using the letterhead logo, create a simple
design for a business card, including all relevant
contact information.
Process

A solid red line travels down from the
horizon in order to provide alignment for the test.
A company slogan was provided in order to fill up
white space. Green and red text were used for the
font in order to blend with the red line (contact
info) or stand out (the name).

Flier
Description

A flyer advertising a business conference, produced in
Adobe Photoshop.
Date

Course/Instructor

COMM 130 Visual Design / Cory Kerr
Objectives

Apply design principles, appropriate typography, and
InDesign skills to create a basic flier.
Process

After trying out several combinations it seemed that the
images weight should be put on the right side of the flyer.
Small circles trace the imaginary line from the figures eyes to
the bolded question. Circles are used elsewhere for additional
information beyond the initial sell. These circles are aligned
with each other and with the logo in the lower-right corner,
which diagonally opposes the largest and most noticeable circle.
