Abstract This paper aimed to implement an ELearning Website in Christian Living Education for Sto.
Tomas de Villanueva Parochial School. The proponents
developed this kind of system to help the 1st year
students in understanding Christian Education with
more ease aside with the traditional teaching acquired in
their classrooms. The research has its special features
aside from the typical features of an E-Learning Site:
Content Creation Management, Messaging and

Technology is the application of science that affects our

daily lives wherein computers are part of technology
that makes our works faster and easier. Computers help
us to communicate easier even for long distances.
It also gives us entertainment such as gaming, watching
movies, listening to music, social networking, video
streaming and a lot more.
As noticed nowadays, vast count of businesses all over
is generated with the help of upgrading of technology.
Modern technology has presented humankind with
amazing amenities to improve their way of life.
Philippines have integrated the use information and
computer technology in various industries like business.
However, there are few traditional people who still
dont believe in technology, they dont rely on
technology for some reasons like modern technologies
now that are truly not cost efficient.
Computer-based learning, sometimes abbreviated to
CBL, refers to the use of computers as a key component
of the educational environment. While this can refer to
the use of computers in a classroom, the term more
broadly refers to a structured environment in which
computers are used for teaching purposes. [3]

1. INTRODUCTION
Modern technology has presented humankind with
amazing amenities to improve their way of life.[1]
Computers are in demand nowadays; we experience the
advancement of technology through the use of gadgets
and appliances.[2]

E-learning includes all forms of electronically supported

learning and teaching, including editing. The
information and communication systems, whether
networked learning or not, serve as specific media to
implement the learning process.[4]

2. RELATED WORKS
According to Edgar C. Bate and Ma. Mercedes T.
Rodrigo of Automatic Detection of Student Off-Task
Behavior while using an Intelligent Tutor for C.L.E. in

2005, As more and more modern classrooms use

intelligent tutoring systems, it becomes imperative for
our educators to determine whether these systems are
being used properly. While using an intelligent tutor, it
is possible for students to engage in off-task behavior,
defined as actions that show disengagement from
learning. Off-task behavior can range from resting one's
eyes, to talking to one's seatmate, to "gaming the
system" defined as abusing regularities of the intelligent
tutor to progress through the curriculum without
actually learning the material.
These behaviors
constitute time away from the learning task and are
therefore considered detrimental to learning [5].
In this paper, the authors attempt to create a model that
automatically detects learner off task behavior while
using Aplusix, an intelligent tutor for C.L.E.
By
analyzing logs of interactions recorded by the Aplusix,
we determine off-task behaviors quantifiable
characteristics. Afterwards, we use machine-learning
techniques to create a model of off-task behavior.
Automatic detection can lead to interventions that can
retain student attention and increase learning.
According to Ian Selda (2006) the Computer software
provides many instructional benefits, but E-Learning
system has much greater impact on student learning. In
a classroom utilizing learning management system,
students often work independently or in pairs at
computers around the room. [6]
Ian Selda pointed out that computer has a great impact
to the student because computers can display instruction
or descriptions on demand, play audio of instructions of
descriptions that students can hear through headphones
and visual depictions of material relevant to the activity.
E-learning is effective at delivering this content to
students without ever tiring or getting impatient.
According to the journal of E-Learning: A New Face in
The Educational Arena of 2004, The study shows that
the E-learning system as a new face in teaching does not
phase out pure lectures, but it welcomes opportunities to
academic augmentation. It offers various entries of
improvement from lectures to visually supported
teaching instructions. Moreover, whatever changes
come half the way in the Philippine educational system,
the answer is not to ignore these changes, but rather to
camouflage within them. It is the response to the
education critics [7].
The study pointed out that the E-Learning System is the
new face of learning and teaching process to improve
the students learning ability. And it is available to
anyone where an individual can study even at home.

According to De Vera, Shirley and Uybengkee,

Raymond, in the article of A proposed CAI in
Geometry, Individual instruction, student-machine
interaction tends to challenge and stimulate student for
at least the beginning, instruction effectiveness to the
student who cannot understand main text of given
access to alternative explanation [8]
According to Ragasa (2008), E-Learning System is
better than the traditional approach of teaching. As
evidence learning system had its own advantages over
human instruction. The student tends to be more
interesting in E-Learning System because of its
characteristics thats results to a more learning acquired.
During the past decades, computers have been used as
learning tools in education. E-learning system provided
a better learning environment in education. At present,
the dynamic and interactive Web sites related to subject
teaching and learning can be easily reached through the
Internet [9].
The goal of the study is to show how dynamic of using
e-learning system in the study of students. The
researchers aimed to get the same idea of environment
for students easily understand each lesson.
According to Esther R. Steinberg (2007), the study of elearning and its application to a foreign language tutor.
The goal for this project is to combine academic
research on the history of e- learning with a practical
analysis and application of these lessons to create a
prototype foreign language tutor. We began our study
with an overview of the field of e-learning. Teaching
computers to learn with the basics in mind, we perused
the journals of the e-learning and intelligent tutoring
system (ITS) in the lecture notes in computer science
series from 1988 to 1998. The most important lesson
learned from our ITS research is that a computer based
tutor is not automatically helpful, educational, or
interesting to students [10].
The goal for this project is to enhance the teaching
materials of the instructors and professors with lectures
analysis and application software. The proponents
began the proposed study with a combination of
personal experience as students in learning this subject
and asking questions to all people concerned.
According to Edward Linton (2004) the purpose of the
proposed research is to examine whether computerassisted instruction increases the performance and/or
positive attitudes toward subject in a sample of
community college students taking an introductory
C.L.E. class. So that the proposed study may be
understood within the context of the existing knowledge

base, this chapter of the proposal reviews the pertinent

literature. The presented review first examines studies
that have explored the effects of computer instruction
on C.L.E. performance. The second section of the
review then examines research investigating the effects
of e-learning attitudes. The final section of the review
presents a series of conclusions about the effects of the
said system attitudes and C.L.E. performance based on
the reviewed literature [11].
The main goal of the study is to determine whether the
e-learning increases the performance on subject. The
researchers proposed the study to use to determine if
their developed system increases the productivity of its
targeted users.
According to Matthew Keller (2002), Computer
technology is soaring in the 1990s as the need for
computer literacy to be part of the educational
curriculum. Computer teaching offers an improved
instructional situation for the student and the teacher.
Teaching math by computer is essential to meet current
needs such as increased numbers of remedial math
students, and computer literacy requirements for
advanced courses. The change process can be managed
with an understanding and controlling of factors such as
personal attitudes and beliefs and change principles.
Specific instrumental changes are needed to facilitate
transformational changes. Computer technology exists
as does its striking potential for transforming classroom
learning [12].

According to Thomas Trautman E-Learning System and

Academic Achievement: A Study of the A+nyWhere
Learning System in a District Wide Implementation of
2002, that the study examined the effects of various
implementations of the A+nyWhere Learning System
(A+LS) on academic achievement. The study involved
four elementary schools in a suburb of Chicago, Illinois.
Two of the schools provided a variety of computer
programs, including A+LS, and two of the schools
directed the faculty to use A+LS to improve student
achievement. The findings showed that students used
A+LS more in the schools where faculty were directed
to use A+LS and they made greater academic gains in
both reading and math as measured by the Iowa Test of
Basic Skills. Additionally, A+LS has features to permit
teacher directed assignment of lessons or assignment of
lessons based on student performance on assessments
(data driven instruction). Findings indicated greater
academic gains for students whose assignments were
generated by assessment results [15].
The author pointed out how the e-learning software
helps the students and teacher to improve their learning
and teaching process in regards with the systems
features. And the researchers observe the performance
of the user.

3. THEORETICAL
FRAMEWORK

The main goal of the study is to show the benefits of

having a computer technology in developing the minds
of the students. The researchers gave an idea to propose
the system to be able to develop the mind of learners by
using computers.
According to Goldenberg (2007), Software on each
computer effectively guides students through a series of
interrelated activities and instruction, addressing a
variety of learning styles. E-learning is effective at
delivering this content to students without ever tiring or
getting impatient. Student enjoys working in a computer
environment because it provides them with immediate,
positive feedback, grades all students fairly and
provides them with more control over the speed at
which instruction is delivered. (Goldenberg, 2007) [13]
According to Dr. William Goldenberg an E-Learning
System has a big benefit on the part of the students
because they can study independently. By the help of
the said system students can enjoy studying their lessons
because it provides them immediate feedback regarding
their performance [14].

Figure 3.1 Social Learning Theory

The researchers applied some concepts Social Learning

Theory for creating Lessons (videos and lectures).
Social Learning Theory emphasizes the importance of
observing, modeling the behaviors, attitudes, and
emotional reactions [16].

Figure 3.2 Chat Filtering Algorithm

The translation of phrase of Chat Filtering follows the
approach of this algorithm.
The research used the simple algorithm for preventing
the results of unnecessary conversations in the chat
room. As the algorithm follow, it blocks the messages
by any user that includes in the Bad Word Database.
A technique used in this study is a thorough research.
One of these is E-Turo, a network of free and open
educational resources. Filipino teachers and learners can
share and customize E-turo content for their own use. Eturo covers basic education, alternative education, and
continuing education. Same concept with E-Learning in
C.L.E which is a software for Christian Education.
Another one is Moodle, Moodle is popular when it
comes to E-Learning because many universities are
using Moodle as an e-learning for their school. Moodle
is an open source of E-Learning software that covers the
pure requirements of E-Learning software and added
features such as forums and supportive ideas, same in
the study of proponents (E-Learning in C.L.E) offering
the complete modules of E-Learning. In classroom vs.Learning article, this article differentiates between
computer learning and classroom training. Classroom
trainings is a training having a face to face interaction
with the students, the advantage of computer training is
that you only need to have a connection in the internet,
if the instructor is absent you can train all you want and
it is like an open source training course so that you can
access the said software anytime, anywhere.

Figure 4.1 Overall Work flow

This diagram represents the overall workflow of the
developed system, thus summarizing the process of
using the developed system. It has three (3) entities with
different role to complete the system. List of entities are
admin, student and instructor. The admin is the one who
manage the system and also can view the user
information whether the student or the instructor. From
there the system will generate report for the admin and
audit trail. The instructor on the other hand, can create
new lesson, quizzes, and exams and can upload different
kind of files. The one who will take the lessons, quizzes
and can download the file uploaded by the instructor are
the students which they can also have report card
generated by the system.

activities, quizzes and exams. The data uploaded by the
instructor is allocated with only 15 Megabytes per
lessons and activities exceeding of the file size will not
allowed by the system.

The diagram shows the dataflow of the system

according to the student level, it states the complete
cycle of the students whole learning management. The
student first add his/her information before accessing
the system, he/she could view the lessons attached
video presentation or lessons attached file before taking
the quiz. The scores of the quiz will be added to
performances before having an assessment. The student
can view the results of his/her exam right after the quiz
or exam and will be directly saved to the students
performance table.

Figure 4.5 Chat Filtering Concept

One special feature and uniqueness of this E-Learning
web site is that it has a Chat Filtering for bad words
wherein the proponents conceptualized a wall for those
bad words input by the users (Students, Instructors and

Admin). The Systems Chat Filtering starts with the

repository for bad words wherein the most common bad
word used is stored. Then E-Learning in C.L.E will
compare the words input by the users from the database
of bad words. If it has been detects a bad word along the
conversation it will not appeared in the chat room and
the user must delete the bad word unless he/she will not
be able to use the chat room.
Another special feature and uniqueness of this ELearning web site is that it has a certain allocation of
file sizes in a chapter and lesson to be able to maximize
the performance level of the E-Learning. The allocated
space of 15MB for the Lesson whether these are Videos
or Text Files. The System will automatically block the
files if the file exceeds the remaining size on a certain
lesson

5. SIMULATION AND TESTING

RESULTS

Figure 4.6 Hierarchical Input Process Output

The diagram shows the whole process of Input and
Output in the site along with its users. The
administrators page has the main tab where you can use
System Tools like go to chat room, messages, glossary

eBoard. It also has announcements as well as deleting of
announcements, calendar (view), notes and adding of
note; the forums tab where you can add forum name,
viewing the topic of forum, add topics, the glossary tab

The purpose of the study as to fully implement the

STVPS E-Learning in CLE one of the strategies to
achieve the desired results is thorough research and
knowledge of the programming language that would be
used in the development of the system. Examples of
these are the Operating systems (Windows XP,
Windows 7 or Windows Vista) at least with 1 GB Ram,
Intel/AMD or at least Core 2 Duo. A monitor with 1378
x 780 display. A good quality of monitor is needed to
view and use the system very well, and for the hard
disc, at least 1GB free space. The following software is
needed to be able to execute the system. The User
should have a computer with good specifications or
least Pentium IV Processor, and an internet connection
because it is online. Adobe Acrobat Reader is needed to
upload and view PDF documents. Windows Media

Player is also needed for the sounds and videos. To be

able to play mp3 files or audio sound to make the
Learning alive and not boring, Adobe Products like
Photoshop and Illustrator, Microsoft Products like word
excel and power point. The software packages needed
for this system are WAMP server, PHP, JavaScript,
Ajax, Notepad ++, those are the programming language
and tools the developers used in doing the system.
Unit testing requires detailed knowledge of the internal
program design and code. It is called the most micro
scale of testing. In this part the researchers tested each
unit of the system like for example the buttons and
commands. All of these should function well and be
executed when hit. All the forms of the E-Learning in
CLE are checked and tested. To ensure that the entire
system is free from all coding errors, buttons and
commands of the E-Learning all have codes.
The researchers do the Integration Testing which is a
test of combined parts of an application to determine if
they function together correctly. These parts are called
modules. The modules that are present in the system are
Learning Management, Admin management, Instructor
management,
glossary
management,
lesson
management, exam management, learning activity and
announcement modules. The purpose of the integration
testing is to verify the systems functionality,
performance and reliability requirements placed on
major design items. All of the forms are connected to
each other by using the form action script of HTML.
The system and all of its sub modules are integrated
together. Formed and united as a whole.
Functional testing is like a black box type of testing,
geared to functional requirements of an application. The
test that was done is based on requirements (objectives
and scope) and functionality of the E-Learning in CLE.
It test whether the system has comply with the
objectives and meet all the requirements. It is always
applied in any kind of testing. Functional testing is
always done. In this phase, the researcher checked the
functionality of all the commands, if its working well.
The E-Learning in CLE has the aspect of functionality,
it performs well. And has accurate output.
The System testing is also a black box type testing that
is based on over all requirements specifications. It
covers all combined parts of a system. In this testing
process, not only the document is checked, but also the
entire system. System testing is always done after the
functional testing. The E-Learning in C.L.E. has
undergone system checking and it is functioning well.
No errors are found. The sub modules are linked to each
other and the whole system is running accurately.
System testing is done usually after the coding of the
entire system. The E-Learning in CLE is checked and
verify thoroughly.
Usability testing is a test for the user friendliness of the
system. If the commands are readable enough and so on,
the proponents discussed the process of the system and

the flow to the testers and it passes the satisfaction of

the testers.
Many of them will not see the command if its too small
for them to view. Thats why the size of the button is an
average size for the user to see. Also the researcher has
focused on the home color of the school Sto.Tomas de
Villanueva Parochial school that dark green is one of
the colors which pleases the eye. The commands are
placed on the right places so that the user would not
have a hard time to understand those commands. The ELearning in C.L.E is a user friendly system.
The peopleware that the system will need are the
Instructor. The instructor/ Professor will be the one to
upload lesson files, videos, audio presentation, create
and update quiz, post announcements, etc. An Admin
is also needed; its task is to maintain the instructors and
students trails, login user maintenance, print reports of
trails, and maintain/update the students and instructors
information. (Can also print reports) post
announcements. Manage the database, Manage forums
and check errors. Lastly are the students who will
undergo the learning process. The students will be the
one to view the lesson and take the quizzes and exams.

6. CONCLUSIONS AND
RECOMMENDATIONS
E-Learning Site in Christian Living Education is an ELearning System that is offered to first year students of
Sto. Tomas de Villanueva Parochial School it is easier
way to understand the Christian Education subject. The
site applies the fundamental features of an E-Learning
site which is Lesson Management, Content
Management, and Knowledge Management to be able to
imply to the students the easier way to understand
Christian Education. Furthermore, this site also has
features the allocation of file sizes among the uploading
of files by the instructors and students and the chat
filtering in the chat room for monitoring the foul/bad
words along the conversation of users.
The proponents would like to recommend to future
developers and researchers the following:
1.

Develop an educational game in relation with this

study.

2.

Develop another E-Learning Site in any of the

subjects of Sto. Tomas de Villanueva Parochial
School

3.

Implement the E-Learning in Christian Living

Education in android phones or Tablet PCs.
