Stationary
March 1, 2015
COMM 130-12, Caryn Esplin
Description
This is a stationary project which I did for my design class.
Objectives
Use the basic tools in Illustrator & InDesign.
Create a new logo to fit a company or personal image. Do not imitate existing
logos or use previous designs. Dont use photos or live trace.
Use the new logo to design consistent layouts for a business card and letterhead.
Photos are okay on business card and letterhead as additional design elements.
Letterhead should be 8.5 x 11, full-bleed optional, but trim only .125. Business card
should be 3.5 x 2 and printed above center on a vertical page.
Apply typography rules, keeping small copy.
Keep designs simple with light watermarks and drop shadows and plenty of white
space.
Include contact information: name, address, phone, website, and email on each
piece. Use periods, bullets, or spaces in phone number; no
parentheses/ hyphens.
Process
My process started with me sitting down with a pencil and paper and sketching
out some ideas for a logo, and then designing my stationary and business cards
around that. Then I decided on my colors and fonts. Next, I took it to InDesign
and went to work. And now you have what you see above.

Flier
January 25, 2015
COMM 130-12, Caryn Esplin
Description
This is a black & white flier I made for a Graduate Leadership Conference.
Objectives
Apply the design principles and use appropriate typography.
Incorporate basic InDesign skills to improve basic flier layout.
Retrieve image and logo from links on this page.
Create a project folder with image, logo and InDesign document to keep links in
InDesign intact.
Process
I started this project by making four different sketches of possible designs. I
decided to use the one that I did because I felt that it conveyed my message
while using the FOCUS skills from the textbook. I then used Adobe InDesign to
do a more official design for my flier. I then did a critique session with my wife,
who gave me some feedback about what she liked or didnt like, as well as any
changes that could stand to be made. Then I applied some of those changes.

Event Ad
February 1, 2015
COMM 130-12, Caryn Esplin
Description
This is an ad I made for a charity sales event.
Objectives
Comprehend image sizing (how pixels and inches work together)
Find, scan and import a high-quality image.
Create a full-bleed design.
Choose a color scheme and typeface(s) that work for your message and
audience.
Learn to use only Word design features without using any Adobe programs,
including Photoshop.
Process
The process I used for this ad was scanning with a scanner into photoshop, but
not photoshopping. I then used the image at full-bleed in Microsoft Word, and
following the FOCUS principles, I did my best to get a clear message across.

Photo Design
February 10, 2015
COMM 130-12, Caryn Esplin
Description
This is a photodesign flier I made for my design class.
Objectives
Learn basic photography skills.
Choose a color scheme, take a photo to match those colors, then incorporate
the colors into the layout.
Use a digital camera to take a quality image, then download it.
Adjust image levels, saturation, color balance, sharpen tool on separate layers
for NDE (non-destructive editing.)
Size and crop the image, then place on an 8.511 page layout.
Use layers to design text, and repeating graphic elements in Photoshop.
Print with full-bleed margins. Trim only 1/8 (0.125) from all four sides.
Process
I used a digital camera to take photos of the individual candy pieces. I then used
Photoshop to repeat the candies in a particular pattern, then created the faded
black overlay text box and placed it over three candies, which placed it just
off-center to create a sense of asymmetry that points to the single yellow candy.

Montage

COMM 130-12, Caryn Esplin
Description
This is a montage project I did for my design class.
Objectives
Use the FOCUS design process with strong focal point and flow
Unify a layout with a consistent theme and dominant spiritual message
Learn to blend two or more images together gradually, using masks
Demonstrate more advanced Photoshop skills for layout with multiple elements
Use a mask to apply a filter to one part of the image
Apply typography principles (titles, quotes, events or scripturesyour choice)
Format type: Legibility; Small copy & Title with varying text size. Theme word(s)
Select good quality images
Process
This was pretty simple as far as process goes. I actually started by choosing the
scripture, which is one of my favorite verses of scripture, and then built my image
around it. Then I found some high-resolution images online and then used
Photoshop to fade the eagle into the main image at 30%, while also fading out
the blue background on the eagle. I then added the scripture over the image.

Use the new logo to design consistent layouts for a business card and letterhead.

Process
My process for this was the same as the process for my stationary project. I
started sketching my design with a pencil and paper, incorporating the logo I
used on my stationary, using the same colors and fonts that I used for my
stationary. I then used InDesign to complete my design.

Logos
February 22, 2015
COMM 130-12, Caryn Esplin
Description
This is a project I did for my design class where I designed three logos.
Objectives
Create three completely different, original logos to fit a company or personal
image that will appeal to the audience. Do not imitate existing logos or use
previous designs.
Use only the Illustrator tools to create and draw your logos. (No Illustrator
pre-fabricated flares, symbols, etc.. No photos or live-tracing. You may use an
image or drawing as a guide to trace it with the pen/pencil, but delete the
image before submitting.)
Gather opinions from at least ten people about which logo appeals most to
them.
Process
The process for this was pretty fun. I actually started by sketching some ideas on
paper. When I narrowed it down to three that I really liked, I then found some
images online that matched up with certain elements of my sketches and used
them for inspiration, more or less, and just made images similar to them in
Illustrator, and added color to the images and just tweaked it until I felt that it
looked good. Then I found some fonts online that I thought worked well with my
designs.

This is a brochure I made for my design class.

Use the new logo to design consistent layouts for a business card and letterhead.

Include contact information: name, address, phone, website, and email on each
piece. Use periods, bullets, or spaces in phone number; no parentheses/ hyphens.
Process
I started by sketching out a logo, which I later finalized in Illustrator, then
sketching the basic layout of my brochure with the general types of images I
would be using. Then I wrote a few paragraphs of original text to go in my
brochure, explaining the product. Next I went online and found four images that
I thought would work with my brochure. I then started working on my brochure
in InDesign, and placed/sized my images, logo, and text to fit in with my original
sketch, and selected background colors that I thought would work well with my
product logo and resonate with my target audience, and help to convey a fun
and positive message.
