What is Auf gehts! ?

The Auf gehts! program emphasizes both

language and culture and has three equally
important elements: interactive software,
this Lernbuch, and time in class.

Interactive

To prepare for class, you work first with the

interactive software. It will introduce you
to new words and phrases as well as cultural
information you need to communicate
effectively with German speakers.

Lernbuch

After working with the software, you

will work in this book to practice the
vocabulary and express yourself in writing.
You will read authentic cultural texts
in German as well. The Lernbuch also
contains classroom activities; bring it to
class each day.

Class time

In class, you will work on your speaking

and listening skills, as well as learn from
the others in the class and from the
instructor.

Learning Strategies

Ultimately, you need to figure out how you learn best. Here are a few tips that work
for everyone:

Spread it out

It is much more efficient to study often for shorter times than to

cram everything into a mega-session once every week.

Review

Learning a new word or phrase usually takes at least 60 successful

recalls or uses. You can never review too much!

Keep up

Dont let yourself fall behind in class.

Ask questions

Communicate with your instructor when you are unclear on the

language, culture, or what you are supposed to do for class.

Make
connections

If you dont know any German speakers, go meet some. There is no

substitute for real people and real relationships.

Travel

Whether as a tourist or to study in a German-speaking country,

your work in this course will pay off when you use what you
learn!

Weve tried to keep the Lernbuch simple the goal is to let you focus on using what
youve been learning in the Interactive to write and speak your new language.
Below are some explanations of the icons youll encounter when completing your
assignments in the Lernbuch.

In-class
activities

Whenever you see this icon, its time for some small
group conversation practice (your teacher will tell
you the specifics).
Be sure to use the vocabulary youve been studying
in the Interactive and other assignments from the
Lernbuch.

Writing assignment
use separate paper

This icon means you are being assigned a writing

exercise to be done outside of the Lernbuch on a
separate piece of paper. These can be done by hand or
in a word processing program on your computer.
The assignments are usually done in German, but read
the instructions or listen to your teacher for specifics.

Writing box

Writing boxes are for just that: writing! This is

a workbook, and you will learn best by actually
writing in it. Typing is good, but because of the
way your brain processes information, there is no
replacement for actually writing some things by
hand when learning a new language.

class or working on your writing assignments in the
Lernbuch.
