ProceduresfortheuseoftheSLIGuidelines

1. UsetheCommunicationScalesmatricestoratethestudentscommunicationinall
areas.Identifyandcirclethescoresineachrowofascale.Sincescoresineachrow
contributetothetotalscore,itisnecessarytodetermineascoreforeachindividual
subscale.Forexample,soundproduction,formalassessment,stimulability,
intelligibility,oralmotorstructureandfunction,andadverseeffectoneducational
performance/communicationareallweightedinimportanceinthedeterminationof
adisability.Donotaltertheseweightedscores.Forexample,donotscore
intelligibilityasa7orstimulabilityasa2.5.

Nozeros(0)aretobeusedonthesescales.No23or34ratingsshallbeused.

3. Thefollowingscaleswouldbeusedforstudents/children,birth3yearsofage.
a. Birth3CommunicationRatingScale:Onthisscale,ratetheresultsof
normativeassessments(ifadministered);theobservationaldataonlanguage
complexity,vocabularyandevidenceofwordfindingissues(determined
usinglanguagescales,developmentalinventorychecklists,languagesamples,
orotherobservationalmeans);thechildsperformanceasperagelevel
developmentalexpectations;and,adverseeffectoncommunication.

4. Alloftheindividualratingsofthesubscalesshouldbeusedtodeterminethefinal

childisdeterminedeligiblebytheCommunityCenteredBoard(CCB)basedonthe
statescriteriaforasignificantdevelopmentaldelay.
7. IndividualAdministrativeUnits(AUs)mayhaveuniqueguidelinesregarding
eligibilityforservicesforstudents.

VarianceinDeterminingtheOverallRating

DuringtheevaluationprocesstheSLPdeterminestheOverallRatingbasedonassessment
resultsandtheRatingScales.Attheeligibilitymeeting,theSLP,incollaborationwiththe
MultidisciplinaryTeam,mayuseprofessionaljudgmenttoaddorsubtractoneratingpoint
fromtheOverallRating.TheMultidisciplinaryTeammayconsiderthefollowing:student
attendance,cognition,rateofprogress,responsetointerventions,culturalandlinguistic
differences,orotherenvironmentalorneurologicalfactors.Theuseofthevarianceshould
beconsideredonlyduringtheeligibilitymeetingsothatallteammembersareableto
discussthefactorsinvolved.MultidisciplinaryTeamdiscussionandanychangesinthe
OverallRatingmustbedocumentedwithintheIEPandinthePriorWrittenNotice.
