Mitchell has heard a lot of
theories over the years concerning Moores high tornado
trafc. The 35-year veteran meteorologist has heard
the one about tornadoes not
touching down where two
rivers meet. Hes heard the
one about a hill in Kansas
that protects Topeka. Hes
even heard one about trafc
patterns.
The one common theme:
Theyre all nonsense.
While the conditions for
tornado touchdown have a
higher occurrence across
Oklahoma and the rest of
Tornado Alley (a vertical corridor stretching from Texas to
South Dakota), Mitchell said
the consistent reoccurrence in
Moore comes down to nothing more than bad luck.
