13 QUICK TIPS FOR

DRESSING UP
YOUR JEANS

Wed venture to guess that within your closet, you have everything
needed to dress up your jeans. But if you find yourself in dire need of inventive ways to wear them, you've come to the right place. Click through
for exceptional ensembles from stylesetters like Miranda Kerr, Nicole
Richie, and Olivia Palermo that will have you singing the bluesjeans that
is.

A.Miranda Kerr
Style Tip: Tuck a sexy, black button-down into your denim, and dont forget to accessorize with
sophisticated pieces like a gold-hardware belt and sleek boots!

B.Laurianne Melierre

Style Tip: We recently spotted the Digital Fashion Editor-in-Chief of Glamour Paris in this perfectly-executed ensemble, and we couldn't resist sharing.
She draped a black pea coat over a crisp button-down blouse and distressed
jeans. However, the accessories stole the spotlight: a ladylike headpiece, chic
envelope clutch, and a pair of thin-strapped heels. C'est magnifique!

C.Nicole Richie
Style Tip: If youre working with a serious pair of flares, the answer is simple: a
bold blazer draped over a crisp button-down it will never let you down.
D. Olivia Palermo

Style Tip: This ones simple, throw on your favorite faux fur
jacket and ankle strap heels and youre done. If you want to
go the extra mile (its ok if you dont), try a sleek hairstyle
la Palermo and carry a minimalist clutch.

E.Elena Perminova

Style Tip: If you find yourself reaching for all things sparkly when
dressing up your look, we suggest you take inspiration from Perminovas recent ensemble. She paired a statement necklace and embellished heels with her ladylike top and blue jeans at Chanels S/S 14
couture show.
F.Hanelli Mustaparta

Style Tip: As of late, the statement sweatshirt seems to be the answer

to an outfit conundrum, and this certainly applies to the dilemma
of how to dress up your jeans. Grab your trendiest sweatshirt and
accessorize with a cross-body bag and strappy heels. Can you say,
model-off-duty?

Blame it on The Devil Wears

Prada, Cathy Horyns scathing comments, or the over-the-top instagrams of Anna Wintours assistants,
but the fashion world is one industry with a lot of myth and hype surrounding it. Sure these tidbits can
be entertaining, but if youre actually looking to work in fashion, we
thought it might be useful to reveal
some of the realitiesthe straightforward truths that aren't often discussed. We asked each of our Who
What Wear editors (as well as our
co-founders!) for a nugget of fashion
industry wisdom, which they think
anyone interested in a similar career
might find useful.

"BEING NICE
WILL TAKE
YOU PLACES"

Once upon a time, the fashion

industry was super specialized and
totally hierarchical: editors edited,
writers wrote, and stylists styled,
period. You didnt get to step out-

much ever. But in todays working

world, the most successful people
are proficient at everything. They
can write the perfect tweet, assemble a polished presentation, create
and curate content, and really take
a hands-on, 360-degree approach to
all aspects of their work. -Hillary
Kerr, Co-Founder & Co-CEO
"The one thing I really wish someone had told me about working in
the fashion industry is that it's actually not nearly as intimidating as
it seems. I used to feel like I wasn't
cool enough to even be in the same
room as some of the people I've had
the good luck of working under
and with. But one major thing I've
learned is that people are just people. I don't care if you're in a room
with Marc Jacobshe still has to
eat, sleep, and breathe, just like you
and I do. I think understanding this
has helped me go further in my career than I would have otherwise."

IT'S NOT AS
INTIMUDATING

"Luckily, I'm a big fan of women so

it's not a problem, but I didn't realize how sparse my interactions with
men in the workplace would be until I actually started working in the
fashion industry. If you're the personality type that needs a balanced
gender presence, it's something to
consider before pursuing." -Nicole

If you want to work in editorial

(magazines or online), there really
isnt a need to go to fashion school,
which can be quite expensive. Id
actually recommend attending a
traditional university and gaining
fashion experience through internships, so you can have a more flexible and well-rounded educational
background in case you decide to
move to a different industry. -Kat

You need to know that the 'work'

is just as hard as in any other profession. It's a business at the end of

sometimes manual labor to be successful. It's not all glamour and free
swag. -Katherine Power, Co-Founder & Co-CEO.

EXCLUSIVE WHITNEY PORT'S 5

TOP TIPS FOR CAREER SUCCESS
For many of us, Whitney Port's name is synonymous with reality shows
The Hills and The Citybut, in fact, the once-reality star has continued
to build her career long after the shows came to an end. She has her own
clothing line, called Whitney Eve, which has seen tremendous success
since it launched in 2009. She's written a book, judged a season of Britain's
iteration of Top Model, and now she's officially being recognized as a social
media entrepreneur.
Port is a panelist at the Create + Cultivate convention, a meeting of some of
the biggest and brightest minds in the digital space, which will take place
in Los Angeles on March 21. Other speakers include blogger Aimee Song,
Into the Gloss founder and CEO Emily Weiss, and others, all of whom will
discuss the role of social media, blogs, and other digital platforms in building careers.
1. Don't be discouraged by hearing 'no.'
"I think the biggest thing in your career is not to be scared of all the
nos youre going to get," Port advises. "In my life, there have been so many
times where I reached a crossroads, and someone had said no this isnt going to work. You have to look at it not necessarily like this isnt ever going
to work, and just give upyou have to think instead, 'How am I going to
get around this, and what are my other options?'"
2. Understand that success takes time.
"Most people think that really successful people have risen and gained success overnight," Port explains. "But if you really talk to them and hear their
stories, you would see and understand all the different issues they faced in
trying to get where they are."
18

3. No woman is an island.
"Have conversations with a lot of people you trust to get to your outcome,"
Port says. "As a young woman, I dont have a lot of the experience that a
more experienced businessperson would have, so its taken me some time
to get a support system and team of mentors around me. I think for anyone
it would be valuable to have a group of people you feel like you can bounce
ideas off of. Theyll think of things you never would have, and will help you
problem-solve."
4. Have mentors, no matter the industry.
"I look up to Diane von Furstenberg so muchshe is such an empowering person for women in general," Port says. "Its cool to see someone in the
fashion space who actually has a political standpoint as well. Shes not just
speaking for fashion, but shes really speaking for all women."

5. Know that social media really can have a positive impact.

"Social media empowers peoplenow people can really do things so
personally," Port explains. "People can [use social media] to kind of form
their own careers, which is so cool, and they can hear how other people
have used social media to do that. I had good exposure via the TV show I
was on, and now that that's over, social media is the channel I use to share
with the world what Ive been up to. Its just another channel for that level
of exposure."

OVERLOOKD FACTORS TO CONSIDER

IN A WEDDING VENUE
After the initial shock and joy
of our November engagement
finally settled in (sometime in
January), my fianc and I started to get serious about planning
our nuptials. I was thrilled at
the thought of planning a ceremony that would be meaningful
to us and to
our families,
along with a
party that our
guests would
never forget.
But so many
thoughts and
ideas were
running
through my
The first thing every planner,
book, and bride will tell you
is that selecting a location and
venue for your big day is the
hardest and biggest decision
and one you should make first.
Theres no use falling in love
with a floral arrangement or

city and state, theres still a lot to figure

out before selecting the exact location
for your big event! From cut-off times
to your guest count, below are 10 important factors you dont want to overlook.
I had dreams of a romantic vineyard
wedding in California wine country
until I learned of
a state ordinance
that prohibits amplified music after
10p.m. Knowing
the kind of reception we wanted
to have and how
important a band
was in our plans,
this wasnt going
to work. See ya vineyard, it would have
been nice. In the same vein, if youre
hoping for a more low-key, intimate
event, but the restaurant where youd
love to host your reception is next

21

One of the locations we looked

at had a gorgeous flowering arch,
which would have made the perfect backdrop for exchanging
vowsthat is, until I learned that
this particular vine was only in
bloom for a few short weeks, none
of which corresponded to when
we wanted to have our event. To
find that out later after having a
cemented vision in my head would
have been a major bummer.
We looked at an absolutely adorable boutique hotel as a potential venue for our wedding, but
even pushing their capacity to the
max would have meant drastically slashing our guest list. To us, it
wasnt worth
having the
wedding in
friends
couldnt be
there to celebrate with
us. On the
flip side, if youve always dreamed
of having a reception in the grand
hall of your local museum, but you
only plan on inviting 50 guests,

If you are imaging an intimate dinner

with yards of silk draping and glistening chandeliers, but the room you
are looking at has soaring ceilings,
it could be extra-costly for your vision to become a reality. If you have
a certain mood or style you want
your event to evoke, make sure youre
looking at venues that already have
some of those characteristics. Otherwise, transforming your space to
suit your vision could end up blowing
your budget.
If your aunt has bad knees or you
know your grandmother isnt walking like she used to, make sure the
sites of your ceremony and reception
can accommodate wheelchairs and
walkers, and double-check that there
is an elevator, so guests arent forced
to take the stairs. I confirmed with
our venue that there will be golf carts
available to shuttle guests between
the garden ceremony and ballroom
reception, because I knew some of
our family members wouldnt be able
to do the walk.
