LJ-1 On-Off Attachment

The LJ-1 on-off attachment is a relatchable tubingdisconnect tool designed for use with right-hand,
rotational-release equipment.
APPLICATION

Production string retrieval

without unseating the packer
in single-string completions

BENEFITs

Allows tubing to be plugged

during upper tubing-string
workover

Automatic relatch

Provides safe tubing

separation above right-hand
release equipment

Jay pins inspected and seals

replaced prior to relatch

FEATURES

Integral Type-D landing nipple

Choice of metallurgy
and seal materials

Seals and jay pins contained

in upper connector

The LJ-1 on-off attachment enables the tubing to be disconnected

above the packer and is provided with an integral Type-D landing
nipple to allow the tubing to be plugged prior to disconnecting the joint.
Two high-strength jay pins are mounted in the upper connector and
engage a left-hand jay slot on the lower nipple. The jay slot provides
2.5 to 3 in. [63.5 to 76.2 mm] of longitudinal movement to allow the tool
to be shear-pinned in either a set-down or pickup shear-release mode.
Description and operation

An optional mill-shoe guide is mounted on the lower end of the female

connector. This guide centralizes the upper connector during the
reconnection procedure and facilitates sand washing after the tubing
has been disconnected and prior to retrieval of the completion string.
A Type-D landing no-go nipple option can be located in the upper
end of the slick joint. This design allows the fishing neck of the lock
and blanking plug assembly to sit above the top of the slick joint and
ensure that sand and debris will be washed off the plug just before
reconnecting.
The LJ-1 and optional washover shoe are installed in the tubing
string. The LJ-1 tool can be pinned in either the up or down shear
mode prior to installation in the tubing string. Normally the tool is
pinned in the shear-up position when run in a single packer installation to prevent prematurely shearing the pins if obstructions in the
casing are encountered.
Unlatching operations are initiated by shearing the pins with either
tension or set-down weight, depending on the shear mode used during
installation. After the release pins are sheared, the tool is unlatched
by applying approximately 1,000 lbm [454 kgm] of set-down weight
followed by a left-hand rotation to the tubing while picking up the tubing. To relatch, tubing weight is applied after the upper connector has
engaged the slick joint. Set-down weight will automatically rejay the
upper connector to the latched position.
