FINAL REPORT ON STRATEGIC PRIORITY AWARD

SCHOOL OF ELECTRONIC, COMMUNICATION AND ELECTRICAL

ENGINEERING
Title: The Online Student Individual Project Management System 2.0
ORIGINAL AIMS AND OBJECTIVES
-

To evaluate and promote the benefits in using the project management system to

other schools within UH and wider engineering disciplines.

To identify needs from other disciplines and cater for specific implementation of the

online project management system within the schools.

To further develop the system, incorporating the needs identified above.
To extend the existing project management system to incorporate the need of other

faculties.
To facilitate management of project for international partners
To repackage the project management system as a complete software solution made
available to other HE establishments.

Expected Outcomes
-

Project management web applications capable of managing a diversity of student

projects for other disciplines.

More consistent approach to managing student projects involving partner institutions
Run support workshops and seminars to members of academic and technical staff on

the usage and capability of the system.

A project management web application that can be promoted as a generic project
management tool to other HE institutions, applicable to engineering as well as other

disciplines.
OSIPMS to be available to other schools and HE establishment at no cost.
Support for OSIPMS provided initially by the school, extending to a self-sustaining
community in the future.

WORK UNDERTAKEN AND OUTCOMES ACHIEVED

-

A revisit and redesigned of the system was achieved using .NET platform, enabling
dynamic marking templates. This was necessary due to the wide ranging practice of

project management activities within FEIS.

A seminar and discussion panel was carried out with project tutors and FAQEC to
discuss the adoption and implementation of OSIPMS within the faculty. PAM to start

in September 08, AADE & CS to follow in September 09.

Identified specific needs and practice in project activities within the School of
Physics, Astronomy and Mathematics (PAM) and the workflow is implemented in

OSIPMS.
OSIPMS is now implemented in PAM for the start of September 2008. The system
will be used by students and staff for this academic year.

Ongoing project that will span beyond this academic year. Further report and
dissemination of practice will continue through conferences/journals/workshops.

FEEDBACK AND EVALUATION

-

The funding provided the opportunity to implement an establish practice in project

management to other schools within the faculty of EIS. The system is now in place
for PAM and evaluation of the system is currently ongoing. A full evaluation will be

carried out towards the end of Semester B 2009 with staff and students within PAM.
The ongoing evaluation will provide a strategy and case study to engage with AADE
and CS for the start of September 2009. This should encourage staff to participate in
the change of practice with an online project management system.
