Detailed Design Assignment

The following instructions apply unless otherwise revised by your mentor.

Note: Your presentation is due this Winter quarter and the report is due at the end of the first week of next
quarter, April 3rd.
1.

PRESENTATION
Your Goal for this Presentation:
The intent is a design review, so that you, faculty, and client all clearly understand the final design details,
agree that it meets the needs, and believe that the team can and will be able to complete it as planned.
Following the presentation, discuss with your mentor any needed changes that you should make for your
follow-up Detailed Design Report.
And so, youre doing these three things:
a) Clearly communicating your final design
b) Provide the major design details as evidence that the design meets needs (e.g., major analysis results)
c) Presenting a detailed plan forward for schedule, budget, and work breakdown (WBS; whos doing
what).
Instructions:
Submit both a PPT and a PDF file of your PowerPoint presentation due in Canvas before stated due date
and time (see Canvas)
All teams to be prepared to present on first day of presentations
Teams that have course conflicts will present first
Remaining presentation order will be chosen at random
You are allowed 8 minutes to present
You will then have 2 minutes for questions
You will be timed and stopped at exactly 8 minutes
All members must be present
Use MS PowerPoint
Scoring rubric is below
Typical content (ask mentor if not sure):
Slide 1: Introduction

Brief intro and overview of project (just state who you are and the task youre
charged with Were the baja suspension team and were designing and
building)
Next slides: List of needs, functions, sub-components, features

List of main project needs, functions, sub-components, features

REPORT
Your Goal for this Report:
To take the content from your presentation and the feedback from faculty and client and incorporate into a
written report. The report will be reviewed by faculty and client for a final review and signoff before you move
forward.
Instructions:

PDF file of your report due in Canvas before Fri. during April 3 (see Canvas for exact date and time)
Bound hard copy to your mentor (unless mentor says otherwise or has a last name of Michaelis)
Formatting:
o 8.5x11 portrait
o 1 inch margins all around
o 10-12 point font
o Times New Roman, Arial, or similar
o Double spaced
o Appropriate headers
o No random or other whitespace (skipping only one line between headers is appropriate; more
than that is unnecessary)
Scoring rubric is below
Content:

Section 1: Introduction

Introduce the report: tell reader what it includes (and does not include, if
important; i.e., if you havent finished certain items yet and they were expected)
Section 2: List of needs, functions, sub-components, features

List ALL project needs, functions, sub-components, features

Section 3: Final Specifications

List of complete and final specifications

Section 4: Description of solution

Overall description of solution models/illustrations/etc.

Section 5: Design details

Design details of your project. See the specific requirements below for what is
needed for your team
Section 6: Summary of evidence

Summary narrative of evidence showing design meets the stated project needs
Section 7: Complete budget and cost analysis

Very detailed: part model numbers, costs, tax, shipping, venders

Section 8: Complete Project Schedule moving forward and thru next term

Very detailed: all tasks, start dates, durations, end dates, and task
relations/dependencies (we should see the critical path)

helmet with calcs, list of all components. all details as shown on comments from Concept Presentation.

6.

Rocketry Airframe
Complete design (CAD models and assembly) showing: fully assembled rocket, details of each section showing
all known components (e.g. fin composition and anchoring design), details showing how sections join together
(x-section would be an ideal way to illustrate this). Provide a detailed estimate of material and hardware
needed.
