Food is an absolute need of human to live in this planet.

The issues
of food insecurity had been discussed and debated in years both in
National and International scale. It is said that 1 Billion people from
7 Billion population in the world is in hunger today, and it is
projected in the next 40 years world population will grow to the level
of 9 Billion and how we going to prevent the issues of food
insecurity become larger in the future?
Food insecurity can be indicated by hunger, malnutrition, or poverty.
In Indonesias case, food insecurity causes by several factor such as,
poverty traps, unsupported local resources, and lack of
infrastructure in agricultural. By tackling these factors and the
integration between all elements, we could prevent the food
insecurity happening.
Although the economic growth is seems increasing, but the
inequality distribution among Indonesian citizens is quite high. The
gap between the poor and rich become wider, if you go to the
Central Jakarta, on the way to go there, you can observe those highend shopping mall, the apartments, the luxury five-stars hotel that
surrounded by neighborhoods of urban settlement.
Poverty Traps; The inequality that rising continuously has causes
the problem of food insecurity. The rich could always serving their
self a good nutrition food, but these poor people having weaker
buying power that causes they cant buy prior foods to consume.
The dollar rate is increasing, inflation happened, the price of worlds
oil is unstable, job opportunity is decreasing and those minimum
jobs need a requirement that cant be fulfilled by poor people.
According to World Bank research, Indonesia has one of the fastest
rising rates of inequality in the East Asia region with a Gini
coefficient that has risen from 0.32 in 1999 to 0.41 in 2012. If this
number keeps increasing, there will be more people got trapped in
poverty and if we
try to connect the
dots, there will be
several
factors
of
Low Education Level
poverty that affect
one to another and
causes hunger;
Hunger

Low Skill

Poverty

Dont Have Prior Job

Weak Buying Power

No Money

Local Resources; Food Security has three pillars: availability,

access and utilization of food. Indonesia has high availability of
resources that can produce foods in high capacity. But,
unfortunately the government leaves little opportunity for people to
develop their own food security initiative based on local resources.
Commonly, developed countries encourage others to buy their
products, but it seems the opposites with Indonesia that still do
imports of food from other countries, such as meat, rice, and other
commodities. The rice of our farmers has to compete with rice from
other country, the farmer getting low income of their rice. The high
consuming habit of Indonesian people that mostly like to use
imported goods could reduce the productivity of local resources and
dependence on imported goods.
Agricultural Infrastructure; Most of foods raw material
production is come from Java Island then it distribute to other
region. The long time travel to transfer the food within region
causes high cost on transportation and the price become higher and
different between one and another island. For example, the price of
chili in Kalimantan Island could be halve higher than the chili price
in Java Island, and moreover to the very east Island, Papua. We can
say this is another challenge of Regional Imbalances in Indonesia.
This regional imbalance also represent the differences in poverty
rates, we could say it regional inequalities.
Further research and real action on the development of local food
sources is really needed. The 3 factors above could give effect to
the population. Poverty traps causes by global inequality, if the
inequality keep increasing in the future, number of people got
trapped in poverty will increase as well. The gap between the rich
and poor become really wider and probably this poor people could
not survive. Developing local resources is badly needed to support
the production of national commodities. If people keep consuming
imported goods, which also produced by local resources, our
product could not survive for a long time and probably could
discontinue. If the resources discontinue the number of poverty will
more increase because those people could not gain enough income.
While the poverty traps causes the gap between poor and rich, the
regional inequality could causes the gap between regions. The logo
of Unity in Diversity probably could mean nothing.

Global inequality represents the gap between poor and rich, this is
not only a problem of Indonesia, but also international issues that
had been discussed to be solved. How if the definition rich and poor
existed is not a coincidence? They are existed because theres
something behind; its to help each other to make the world a better
place. The rich could gather and form an agency to help those poor
arise from poverty. They could build a school for the street child,
help them to have hope in life, teach them how to make things and
be better in the future. In Indonesia there are so many street child
that living in poverty. We can start with this child, they want to go to
school but they feel shame with others normal child. If from the
beginning these children have better mindset of how to life, they
could improve their self in the future and decrease the number of
poverty. In the future they could create an opportunity to others, to
have a better life.
Each region have to develop their own regional resources, thus it
will be more efficient and reduce the cost. There are still many
regions in Indonesia that have not yet develop their own resources
to produce food. If we could maximize the potential of each regions
resource, we could maintain the balance and keep it equal between
regions. Besides improving the potential of local resources, the
government should advance the transportation system, thus the
food distribution will be easier and people that live far from the city
could reach it.
