Filter Type PR-BW 600

Filtration

High-Performance Debris Filter for

Universal Application
The PR-BW 600 is a universally applicable Backwash Filter in the High-Performance
Class for volume flows of 1,800 to 50,000 m3/h and filter fineness degrees between
5 and 9 mm.
Based on nearly 30 years of experience in the field of debris filtration of large
volume flows we decided to develop a new filter concept with universal application.
Detached from special demands this concept was meant to respond to common
problems, at the same time offering a high degree of standardization.
This filter concept thus impressively meets the general demands for high efficiency,
safety, maintenance friendliness and installation possibilities under limited space
conditions. A product that sets standards with regard to its economy.

Field of Application:
Operation in seawater, brackish water, river water, or other water sources
for the protection from macro fouling of objects installed downstream, such as
condensers and heat exchangers, in open cooling circuits with once-through
cooling or recirculative cooling systems (cooling towers)
for the protection of cooling water circuits of MSF seawater desalination plants
from blockage by particle fouling

Filter Design
The design of the PR-BW 600 is basing on the well-proven PR-BW 100 series. The
filter consists of a filter housing (1) with flanges on both sides that may be installed
directly in-line, in an existing piping. Firmly mounted in the filter housing is a big,
mainly semi-cylindrical filter section (2), without gaps to the upstream and downstream sides, whose concave side faces the flow side. Arranged on the upstream
side of the filter section is a backwash rotor (3) that, by actuation of the actuator
(8), is able to oscillate around the axis formed by the two bearings (4 and 5),
thereby covering the filter section.
In the inlet area the backwash rotor is shaped as a canal that partially covers the
filter section. The inlet of the canal consists of a permanently elastic packing. The
special design of both canal inlet and packing safeguard the pressure-relief
(PR = pressure-relieved) during filter backwash (BW = backwash).
A differential pressure measuring system (7) continuously monitors the adjustable
backwash point and initiates the backwash procedure which can additionally be
started by a timer.
At the outlet opening connected with the backwash rotor a debris discharge valve
(9) is fitted that is opened via an actuator only for backwash purposes. As an
option the filter is provided with a bypass flap (6) that opens in the case of overload.
The filter is equipped with an SPS control panel that is already prepared for fitting
of the TAPROGGE FilterOptimizer. All operational conditions are clearly displayed
at the Operator Panel.

Filter Function
The medium to be filtered enters into the filter housing via the inlet stud, passes
through the filter section (2) that is designed as a self-supporting, large chamber
of concave shape, and leaves the filter through the outlet stud. Particles larger than
the selected filter fineness accumulate on the filter section. Once a pre-set differential
pressure has been reached, the debris discharge valve opens and the rotor passes
over the filter surfaces in both directions.
The pressure differential now prevailing between the filter location and the end of
the discharge pipe generates a backwash flow (BW = backwash). At the same
time the specially shaped inlet canal of the backwash rotor covers the filter section
in such a way that the particles to be filtered are relieved from the influx of the
medium in this area of the filter section (PR = pressure-relieved). The debris particles
are thus pressure-relieved and can lift themselves off from the filter section whereupon
they are discharged by the backwash flow through the debris discharge pipe.
Voluminous coarse particles are sucked off by the backwash flow latest when the
rotor motion has reached its final position. The speed of rotor rotation can be
adapted to local conditions.
Upon switching off of the rotor drive the debris discharge valve closes. Filter backwash
is thus concluded. The optional bypass flap opens automatically in cases of emergency.

Installation
The PR-BW 600 Debris Filter is normally installed directly upstream of the heat
exchanger to be protected. The backwash process necessitates a pressure drop in
the discharge pipe. Normally the discharge pipe of the filter can be arranged in a
by-pass to the heat exchanger and re-fed into the cooling water flow downstream
of the same, as the necessary pressure drop is generally caused by the heat
exchanger itself.
The backwash water can be discharged atmospherically by making use of the static
overpressure downstream of the filter. If the pressure differential is insufficient, the
backwash water can also be guided in a pipe via a booster pump.
