Josh Blanchard Wins Again in PBA Xtra Frame Maine Shootout

PORTLAND, Maine Nine days after winning his
first Professional Bowlers Association Tour title in
Germany, Josh Blanchard of Gilbert, Ariz., made it
back-to-back titles, winning the PBAs Xtra Frame
Maine Shootout at Bayside Bowl Tuesday with a 21 victory over Australias Jason Belmonte in the
best-of-three-game title match.
The Maine Shootout, the first PBA Tour event held
in Maine, was a best-of-three-game, single-elimination match play tournament that was covered live on
PBAs exclusive online bowling channel, Xtra Frame.
Blanchard, fresh off his first career win in the
Brunswick Euro Challenge, won five consecutive
best-of-three-game matches, including a stunning
Round of 64 decision over Wes Malott of
Pflugerville, Texas, on his way to the title. In his first
match, Malott won the first game, 270-202, but the
2011-12 PBA Rookie of the Year then rallied for
consecutive 258-256 victories to begin his march to
the title. He then eliminated Greg Ostrander,
Freehold, N.J., 2-0; Jason Sterner of Covington, Ga.,
2-0; Bryon Smith of Roseburg, Ore., 2-0, and Osku
Palermaa of Finland, 2-0, to reach the title match
against the two-time reigning PBA Player of the Year
where he won the first game, 243-180, lost the second, 204-234, and started with six strikes en route to
a 249-211 in the deciding game.
I just decided to stop trying to hook the ball,
Blanchard said of his career-changing strategy. I
decided I just dont have the ball rotation to hook the
ball with these guys, so I went back to playing it

While you are used to reading
about 300 games and 800 series
frequently here, let us not forget
the regular bowlers who reach
pinnacles of their own. Such is
the case of Julie Mills, wife of
Morris County Hall of Famer Les
Mills. On a 163 average she
rolled her first 600 series, an even
600 on games of 195, 195, and
210 in the Oakwood Lanes
Misfits League. She is now eligible for membership in the county,
state and national 600 clubs and
their tournaments thereof. She
wasnt nervous, as she had not
done the math and her husband
didnt imply that she would need
a big third game either.
And now for the rest of her fantastic and courageous story. On
October 4, 2012, Julie was
involved in a head-on car collision. It should be noted that a
young woman who was texting
while driving drove the oncoming
car. Julie had several broken
bones in her left arm and right
leg. She also had two broken vertebrae and ribs. She has a herniated tibias muscle in her right leg,
and was in the hospital for a
month. She couldnt even walk

until the following January, and

has had 8 months of physical
therapy. By June of 2013 she told
Les that she wanted to get back
into bowling, a sport she only
learned since marrying Les 15
years ago.
However, in addition to residual
issues, her fingers on her right
hand are almost straight. She
went to Tom Laskow to find and
drill equipment to help her return
to the sport. He drilled up an 8pound ball and worked with Julie
to take baby steps. Over two
years he gradually increased her
ball weight to the 14-pound that
she uses now. Laskow also drilled
her ball to make it hook. He said,
This makes her feat even more
impressive now. Julie says that
people are not always aware that
a trained ball fitter can work with
injuries and physical limitations.
Perhaps the best thing about
Julies big night was beating
Less series. The worst thing
about the accident, Julie said, Is
having to get rid of my motorcycle. I just cant risk it (injury to
her leg). She has reached her
goal of a 160 average, and the
600 series. She would like to next

the Friday Night Mixed League at
Rockaway Lanes. He admits to
being nervous on the last 3 shots.
To stay calm and focused, he
gave himself time to calm down.
Most of the people kept bowling. They didnt stop to watch.
That would have made me more
nervous. He enjoys a second
league at Oakwood Lanes. His
next goal is an 800 series, besting
his current high of 751. Corey
resides in Budd Lake with his
wife, JoAnne. He is the warehouse manager at CSS Inc.
Edward A Duke Nicolian saw
his third sanctioned perfect game,
rolling in the Couples League he
posted scores of 224-300-255 for
a 779, close to his high of 782. He
was nervous in the tenth frame,
but he stayed focused by not worrying about leaving a pin. He said
he would just be happy with his
shot. He dedicated his latest
achievement to My Dad,
Edward, who passed in 2012. He
was there for one of my 300s.

Stan Niemiec Youth Travelers
By Vince Albrecht
OAKLAND, NJ - Perhaps the most popular venue for the Stan Niemiec
Youth Travel League keglers is Holiday Bowl, justifiably considered
bowler-friendly. In this last visit of the season there, the talented young
players lit up the telescores with a deluge of fifty-three deuces and sixteen
600s which included four 700s and three 650s. Leading the
onslaught of the plastic-sticks was Bergen Arts & Science junior Chris
Navarro. The southpaw blitzed the pin decks with a stellar triple deuce
238-226-277-741, leading a torrid Lodi quartet to an impressive 30442924 five of seven points against high-scoring North Arlington.
Other 200s for the victors were Steve Kropilak 215, Nick Ferrante 211
and Louis Ferrante 205. North Arlington anchor Jordan Lopez delivered
three power scores of 224-246-238-708 to lift his twenty-seven game average to 215. Also rolling well were Chris Liloia 206, Haley Hassan 197-190
and Donovan Battistus 193.
Tappan Zee freshman Matt Russell exploded with games of 279-265 as
part of his 721 set, Michaella Raab had three strong over average games
and teammates Henry Tipping and Joseph Mahoney added singles of 223
and 210 respectively as Montvale outslugged Bowler City III, 3004-2903
in yet another high-scoring affair.
Firing deuces1 for BC III were Nathan Tombo 213-201-603, DanaMarie Laloo 207, Derek Lewandowski 204 and Tiffany Sucero 202. In one
of the two nail-biter matches, Boonton stopped first place Bowler City I,
2907-2882, taking five of seven points. Figuring the lanes out after a
below average opener, Montville senior Karl Kattermann battered the
plastic-coats with games of 269-253-693 in powering the Boonton team.
Adding 200s for the winners were Peter Hancock 217, Sean McGuire
202 and Drew Gille 200. Posting a flurry of deuces for BC I were James
Kane 236-614, Kristen Kane 225-210, Janina Santoro 221 and Trevor
Savoye 200.
In the other tightly contested face-off, Bowler City II edged past T-Bowl,
3041-2990 to come away with five points. Powering the offense was lefty
Matt Burzynski 247-225-245-717 with help from Arielle Wallace 205194, Emily Young 201 and Matthew Ramos 196. T-Bowl brightened the
leaderboard with strong threesomes from Matt Morris 254-244-668 and
Josh Spiegel 248-213-637. Holiday I recorded a superb 2491, the sessions
best net, fashioning it with four 600s,Ryan McGuire 253-225-663, David
Neil 244-206-618, Nick Cilento 205-201-605 and Frank Magyar 214-605
in shutting out Fair Lawn, 2953-2759. Deuces for the latter included
Madison Perry 245, Nick Greco 225 and Tyler Nappi 203.
A sizzling Holiday II squad gained seven points from the vacancy
behind Al Chamberlain 224-632, Wade Chamberlain 222-205-612 and Joe
Malyack 215-609.
