BLCHER SANITARY DISCHARGE SYSTEM

Europipe Sanitary Pipework System

Europipe is a complete stainless steel sanitary pipework
system approved for installation in ships. The light weight
and fire resistance of the pipes and fittings makes
Europipe a natural choice for the shipbuilding industry,
where old fashioned, heavy products are being replaced by
lighter, easy to install, maintenance free alternatives.
The push-fit joint has been developed in such a way that
Europipe is completely interchangeable between either
gravity or vacuum discharge systems. The benefits of being
able to use the same pipework system throughout the
vessel, regardless of the type of system being employed,
can offer significant installation savings.

Marine Drains
BLCHER Marine Drains have been developed in conjunction
with a number of leading shipyards. As a result the
product offering meets the specific demands of each
individual installation regardless of the deck construction.
All are suitable for welding into the deck, can be fitted with
a removable water trap (providing full rodding access from
above) and are available to suit any floor finish.
As Marine Drains have been developed on the basis of a
"modular" principle, many solutions are achievable using
only a few component parts.

Drainage Channels
BLCHER stainless steel drainage channels are purpose
made linear floor drainage solutions for use in galley areas,
door openings, plant rooms etc. Drainage channels are
available to suit all floor finishes with a range of gratings
developed to suit the varying load bearing and flow
demands. Outlets are available with a removable water trap
and where applicable filter basket to prevent solids
discharging into the drainage system. In common with other
BLCHER products drainage channels are available in AISI
304 and AISI 316L stainless steel.

Finish
BLCHER Marine Drains are chemically descaled (acid pickled) in
order to enhance the natural corrosion resistance and provide a
uniform matt silver finish. Grates are made of polished
stainless steel. A protective plastic cover and/or film is
provided on most grates and should remain in place until
installation is complete.

Introduction
BLCHER manufactures an extensive range of floor drains,
suitable for light to medium duty traffic, which combine
advanced design, high quality and ease of installation all at
extremely competitive prices.
The BLCHER Marine Drain range has been developed on the
basis of a "modular" principle. This means that by employing
one of 4 standard lower parts, connecting this to an upper part
to suit a tiled, vinyl or painted steel deck and completing the
installation with a removable water trap, almost any floor
drainage solution is achievable. In addition BLCHER also
offers a range of Rodding Eye Points (clean-outs).

Explanation of Type Numbers

All BLCHER Floor Drains have triple three digit type numbers.
The first number refers to the product type and the remaining
numbers are dimensional references.
TYPE No.

Application
BLCHER Marine Drains are used for the drainage of floor areas
and/or discharge appliances in:

SOCKETS AND PIPE SEALING RINGS

Choosing gaskets
The BLCHER lip seal is available in three different rubber
qualities, each of which is designed to handle different liquid
waste types at varying operating temperatures.

EPDM:

The standard BLCHER lip seal designed for use in

general installations where no oil or gasoline residues
occur in the discharge water. The EPDM lip seal is
versatile, with a wide area of application.
The temperature range is -40 to +212 F (-40 to
+100 C).

NBR:

BLCHER lip seal for applications where gasoline or oil

residues may occur in the discharge water (e.g. in
connection with oil and gasoline separation systems).
The NBR lip seal should not be used where solvents
are present. The temperature range is -22 to + 176
F (-30 to +80 C).

EUROPIPE

T M

- P I P E S A N D F I T T I N G S

Europipe is joined using a push-fit spigot and socket jointing

method. The seal between the socket and spigot is referred to
as the BLCHER lip seal. The BLCHER lip seal ensures quick
and easy installation of the pipe system and provides a
watertight joint with or without pressure on the system.
The BLCHER lip seal is also suitable for use within gravity or
vacuum drainage installations.

FPM:

Dimensions

Type No.

BLCHER lip seal for special applications. This material

has a high thermal resistance and withstands exposure
to oil, solvents and highly corrosive acids. However,
the FPM lip seal has only limited resistance against
butyl acetate, acetone and methylated alcohol.
The temperature range is -13 to +392 F (-25 to
+200 C).

MA TERIA L SP ECIFICATI ON - STAI NLESS STEEL

Material specification - Stainless steel

Stainless Steel
The designation stainless steel applies to a number of alloys
with different properties.
Common to all stainless steels, is the fact they contain at least
12% Chromium.
Stainless steels can be divided into three main groups, and a
few mixed types, according to the structure of steels.

magnetic and obtains better thermal conductivity. Nickel also

increases the corrosion resistance against certain materials.
Molybdenum has the same effect on the structure as chromium,
but with a significant positive influence on the corrosion
resistance (except against hydrochloric acid). Normally the
molybdenum-alloyed steels are designated as acid proof, due to
their resistance to most types of acid.

The main groups are:

Austenitic
Ferritic
Martensitic

Why are the steels "stainless"?

By adding chromium as an alloy to the steel, a passivating
oxide layer is formed, with a high content of chromium oxide.
The oxide layer protects the steel surface against the oxygen in
air and water.
Stainless steel has the ability to automatically re-establish the
chromium oxide layer, if the steel surface is bared. This
restoration of the oxide layer will only take place, if the steel
surface is completely clean and free of temper, welding slag,
and contamination from tools of ordinary mild steel.
If this contamination of the surface is not removed, the steel
may corrode. To prevent this, the steel surface should be
cleaned after welding and machining. Pickling of the stainless
steel can do this.
The pickling effectively removes all impurities from the surface
of the steel, and allows re-establishment of a strong, uniform
chromium oxide layer.
The pickling solution usually consists of 0.5-5 vol. % HF
(hydrofluoric acid) and 8-20 vol. % HNO (nitric acid) at a
temperature of 77 to 147 F (25 to 60 C). This acid solution
removes the existing chromium oxide layer and any iron
contamination leaving a pure steel surface, which in the
subsequent rinse in water reforms a strong chromium oxide
layer.

Of these three main groups, austenitic stainless steel is the

most important, representing about 90% of the total
consumption of stainless steel.
The importance of alloying elements
Austenitic stainless steel contains at least 18% chromium and
8% nickel, which has given rise to the popular designation 18/8
steel. In general, corrosion resistance is increased in line with
the increased chromium content. Alloys with 12-13% chromium
have a passive layer strong enough to prevent the steel from
rusting when exposed to normal or slightly aggressive media.
The alloying element nickel mainly effects the steel's structure
and mechanical properties. With a sufficiently high content of
nickel, the structure of the steel is austenitic. This, as opposed
to the pure chromium steels (ferritic stainless steels), improves
the mechanical properties, significantly, such as increased
impact resistance and ductility, high resistance to thermal
stress, and improved weldability.
The austenitic structure also leads to changes in physical
properties of the steel. For instance, the steel becomes non-

Corrosion resistance
Austenitic chromium-nickel steel is resistant to many different
chemical products and most detergents. BLCHER drainage
products are manufactured exclusively from this group and as
such are established for use within the food, beverage,
chemical, pharmaceutical, dairy, shipbuilding and commercial
catering industries.

fire collars). Furthermore, no toxic fumes or substances are

released from stainless steel in the event of fire.
Thermal stress
Due to the very low heat expansion coefficient of stainless
steel, BLCHER drainage products are not adversely affected by
temperature fluctuations occurring in drainage installations.
There are therefore no special constraints that determine at
what temperature BLCHER products should be stored or
installed.

When increased acid-resistance is required, and spot and

crevice corrosion may occur, molybdenum-alloyed chromiumnickel steels (316L) may be used.
These acid-resistant steels resist a number of organic and
inorganic acids.
However, acid-proof steels are only partially resistant to
solutions containing chlorides.

Hygiene
From practical experience in hygienic installations (food
preparation, healthcare etc.) it is documented that bacterial
growth on stainless steel is significantly lower than alternative
materials (e.g. plastics). In addition an unused piece of
stainless steel pipe has a very low surface roughness
(K=0.00006 in. (0.0015 mm)). This low surface roughness
minimises not only bacterial growth, but also the danger of
sediments building up which may later lead to blockages.

Impact resistance
The high tensile strength of stainless steel makes the material
resistant to impact damage at all temperatures. Severe blows
to the material may in certain cases cause dents, they are
however unlikely to fracture the material.

Weight
BLCHER drainage products are all produced in thin-walled
stainless steel sheet making the most of the materials high
weight to strength ratio.

Fire resistance
Stainless steel is non-combustible which means that pipes and
drains made of stainless steel may penetrate floor partitions
without the need for special fire insulation (e.g. intumescent

BLCHER Metal A/S - Denmark

The Company

In 1965, the founder of BLCHER started to

produce stainless steel drainage products.
Initially the products were developed to
meet the specific demands of the chemical,
food and beverage industries.

One of these product developments was

Europipe a push-fit drainage pipework
system, that is lightweight, easy to install
and offers excellent resistance against
corrosive liquids.

In the early eighties Europipe and

specially developed Marine Drains designed
for welding in the deck, were introduced to
the Danish shipbuilding industry. The
benefits associated with the use of these
products became quickly recognised and
BLCHER became the first choice supplier for
new build projects in Denmark.

Other European yards quickly followed the

Danish example and today BLCHER delivers
to most of the worlds leading shipyards.

A fundamental reason for the adoption of

Europipe was the fact that the same system
could be used for vacuum and conventional
gravity drainage systems. In addition
stainless steel requires little or no
maintenance thus saving refurbishment
costs. As a result many ship owners started
to demand Europipe when re-fitting their
ships.
Applications

Stainless steel is a clean, durable, corrosion

resistant material ideally suited for structures
with a design life expectancy of over fifty
years.

BLCHER only uses high performance

austenitic stainless steel. Grade AISI 304 for
hygiene and aesthetic applications, grade
AISI 316 for more demanding corrosive
environments.

The BLCHER sanitary discharge system is

utilised within installations where demands
are made for:
