Millennial unemployment hits 13.9 percent

BY STEPHANIE GROVES
DHI Media Staff Writer
sgroves@delphosherald.com
Even though the national unemployment rate has remained unchanged at 5.5
percent the past two months and the economy added 126,000 jobs, the unemployment rate for 18-34-year-olds increased to
7.8 percent in March from 7.5 percent in
February, according to Young Invincibles
website.

Generation Opportunity (GenOpp)

released its March 2015 Millennial Jobs
Report - non-seasonally adjusted (NSA) data
specific to 18-29 year-olds - indicating the
effective (U-6) unemployment rate for the
demographic stands at 13.9 percent (down
.10 percent from February) as compared to
the 9.1 percent (U-3) official unemployment
rate.
President of Generation Opportunity Evan
Feinberg said the underwhelming jobs numbers and the stagnant youth unemployment

rate paint a clear picture of a generation held

back from realizing their full potential.
Despite the demographics best efforts to
create and innovate, this generation runs into
government obstacles at every turn such as
proposals to tax the Internet and over-regulate emerging industries like ride-sharing,
he said.
According to GenOpps March 2015 report,
there was a declining labor force participation
rate which created an additional 1.842 million
Millennials that were not counted as unem-

ployed by the U.S. Department of Labor

because they are not in the labor force, meaning they have given up looking for work due to
the lack of jobs.
Statistics show a 27,000 increase in the
number of unemployed 18-29-year-olds as
compared to February 2015, when there were
1.815 million young adults unemployed a
decrease of 22,000 from Januarys figure of
1.837 million.

There are so many
times in our lives when
we hit transitional times.
As we move through
changing situations, we
are not always prepared
to face these changes.
At the time of death of
a loved one, there are multiple transitional changes.
Having others to share
with in discussion and
resources can be helpful.
Life Past Loss will
begin meeting at 7:30 p.m.
today at St. Johns Ministry
Center. The group will be
hosted by the Rev. David
Howell and Sue Sherran,
MSLPCC, who will meet to
discuss and support issues
around death and dying.
There will also be a
chance to share socially at noon the third
Friday of each month
at the Topp Chalet
(Dutch treat) at noon.
This is an ecumenical ministry and
open to everyone.

VAN WERT Nineteen

vacant and abandoned properties in Van Wert County were
torn down thanks to the states
part of a $119 million lawsuit
settlement against a group of
mortgage lenders who were
blamed for using deceptive
practices to contribute to the
rash of home foreclosures that
hit Van Wert and many other
Ohio counties.
The money awarded to
the state in 2012 funded the
Moving Ohio Forward program. The state distributed
the money for the program
based on population. Van Wert
County received $172,147
and contributed an additional $6,735, bringing the total
investment to $178,882. The
average demolition cost per
unit was $9,414. Properties
were razed in Delphos,
Middle Point, Van Wert City,
Willshire and Wren.
Abandoned properties
are not only a safety hazard, but a magnet for crime,
said Van Wert County Board
of Commissioners Chairman
Stan D. Owens. The foreclosure crisis contributed to
an epidemic of neglected
and forsaken properties that
threatened property values
as well as community safety. The county saw the value
in the Moving Ohio Forward
Program and was more than
willing to contribute to stretch
those dollars farther.
Neighboring
counties
also managed similar results:
13 buildings were razed in
Paulding County, 14 in
Putnam County and 16 in
Mercer County.

Overdrive, an app that allows users to
borrow eBooks, audio books and magazines and read them on their device(s).

Since we are in the library consortium, these magazines only cost the

naval and aerial forces in the North
Sea. The British and French governments announced that they had assured
Norway that they had decided to extend
full aid and that they were accordingly
taking the necessary naval and military
steps.
The attractive new high school
building at Fort Jennings will be formally dedicated April 21, according to

Farmers ready to
plant corn, soybeans

Thursday, April 9, 2015

The Herald 3

STATE/LOCAL

BY JAMES HOORMAN
Putnam County Extension Educator
news@delphosherald.com
The following article was written by Ed Lentz, Hancock
County Extension.
Farmers are gearing up for corn and soybean planting,
which use to take two to three weeks of good weather to finish,
but now can be accomplished in three to seven days with new
technology and advanced planters. Several farmers in the area
have GPS planters so they can come back to the same row year
after year.
In order for all of this to happen, grain farmers will inspect
and repair planters during the months prior to planting so that
these planters are at peak performance before planting begins.
A planter that is not operating properly or breaks down during
planting can cause serious yield reductions from delayed planting or missing the window of optimal weather. The following
is a planter setup and maintenance list that farmers typically
follow:
Check meters on a test stand in order to visually inspect
parts and evaluate performance.
Inspect all mechanical drive components and look for
any excessive wear including down pressure springs, parallel
linkages and bushings.
Check seed tubes for any wear, particularly in the bottom
section that can wear or become damaged. Replace if damaged
or has excessive wear.

For vacuum planters, check all lines for damaged tubes.
Check hydraulic motor for leaks and make sure fan is clean.
These are the planter checkup items before getting to the
field. Once at the field, the farmer has to check the planting
depth, row cleaner setting, closing wheel pressure and the
gauge wheel pressure.

Friends of Ohio Barns to hold

16th annual barn conference
INFORMATION SUBMITTED
FINDLAY Join Friends of Ohio Barns for yet another
educational barn adventure April 24-25.
April 24 kicks off the full conference package with a daylong bus tour through Hancock County to see and explore
some wonderful historic barns. One stop will be the BrightHoy Barn, which was built in 1854 and features strong German
influence as well as several examples of extraordinary craftsmanship. Lunch will be catered by We Serve. Coffee will be
offered in the Ropp-Metzger Barn, built in 1833 and preserved
by fourth-generation family member Mark Metzger, who will
tell us stories about his barns and how he is preserving them
for future generations.
Other barns include some being restored for farming purposes. A couple of the properties have farm houses that we will
be able to explore as well.
The final stop is the Basinger Barn, which holds many surprises, some of which may be the first for Friends of Ohio Barn
members and guests. This barn sports several owl holes, some
on the broad side of the barn.
There is always so much to learn from the Barn Detectives
and other knowledgeable members about barn structures and
the unique aspects of the barns chosen for this tour.
Saturdays conference will be a day filled with presentations.

Hoosier Sugar Cream Pie

Pie crust for 1 9-inch pie
1 cup sugar
1/2 cup flour
1/2 teaspoon salt
2 cups heavy cream
2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
2 tablespoons unsalted butter, cut into small
pieces
1/4 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg
Place crust into pie plate; crimp edges. Preheat
oven to 425 degrees. Sift sugar, flour and salt
together into a stainless steel bowl; set aside.
Heat cream in a small saucepan over medium-high heat until hot but not boiling. Whisk into
sugar mixture until sugar is dissolved. Stir in vanilla. Set in an ice-water bath; let cool completely.
Pour filling into pie shell. Dot with butter; sprinkle with nutmeg. Bake 15 minutes. Reduce temperature to 350 degrees. Cover edges of crust with a
foil band. Bake until a thin knife inserted in center
comes out clean, 50-55 minutes more. Let cool on
a wire rack. Serve warm with berries and raspberry
whipped cream.

Breaded Pork Tenderloin Sandwich

1 pork tenderloin (about 1-1/4 pounds)
1 cup buttermilk
1 teaspoon kosher salt, plus more for seasoning
1/2 teaspoon each ground black pepper, garlic
powder and onion powder
1/4 teaspoon sweet paprika
1/4 teaspoon sugar
1 cup all-purpose flour
2 large eggs, beaten
2 cups plain breadcrumbs
Vegetable oil, for frying
4 hamburger buns, toasted on cut sides
Trim the pork tenderloin of excess fat. Cut crosswise into 4 even pieces. Cut each piece crosswise
again, but do not go all the way through; you should
be able to open it like a book. Pound each piece with
a mallet until 1/4-inch thick and 6 to 8 inches across.
Whisk together the buttermilk, salt, black pepper,
garlic powder, onion powder paprika and sugar in a
shallow dish. Add the pork cutlets. Make sure all the
pieces are coated well with the buttermilk marinade.
Cover and keep refrigerated for at least 4 hours and
up to overnight.
Heat halfinch of oil in a large high-sided skillet
to 350 degrees. Set up a breading station of three
shallow dishes consisting of the flour in the first
dish, eggs in the second and breadcrumbs in the
third. Sprinkle all three dishes with salt and pepper.
Dredge each cutlet in the flour first, then egg and
finally breadcrumbs. Gently place into the hot oil
without overcrowding the skillet. Fry in batches.
When the cutlets are golden brown on one slice,
about 2 minutes, carefully flip and cook for another
2 minutes. Drain well on a paper-towel-lined plate.
Build the sandwiches by putting the cutlets
between the burger buns and garnishing with lettuce, tomato, onion, pickles, mayonnaise and mustard. The cutlet should hang generously over the
bun.

NFL makes a NCAA Tourney head says refs

big decision should have been more patient

A hodgepodge of opinion, conjecture and whatever
else I can dream up!
Or not!
Elsewhere in todays sports pages is the announcement the National Football League has hired its first fulltime female official of the feminine persuasion!
Whether this is a good story depends on one thing I
echo the sentiments of many that are quoted in that same
story, just maybe not as overboard as I think some were
can she do the job at the highest level?
Will she be as blind heh, heh as many of her
now now-brethren?
As any official of any sport, especially one that is as
fast and furious as professional football, my only concern
is can she keep up with the speed of the game?

INDIANAPOLIS Dan Gavitt

would like college basketball referees to
take more time to make the right calls,
especially with a national championship
at stake.
Less than 48 hours after a crucial call
helped Duke hold on for a 68-63 victory
over Wisconsin on Monday night in the
title game, the NCAAs vice president
of mens basketball told The Associated
Press that the referees could have been
more patient at the replay monitor.
A magnified shot that aired during
CBS live telecast appeared to show a
Duke player touched the ball last when
Badgers guard Bronson Koenig missed a
layup with 1:54 to play and Duke leading 63-58. But Gavitt said the officials
never got a chance to see that replay
because they had already decided to
uphold the original decision that the ball
went off Wisconsin.
All Im saying is that I think theres
a chance that if there had been a longer
review, especially on the blown up one,
the magnified version, theres a chance
there would have been enough evidence to
overturn the call, Gavitt said Wednesday.
But its still a judgment call.
Gavitt said he spoke with Badgers

Lake Erie anglers should expect

good fishing again in 2015
INFORMATION SUBMITTED
COLUMBUS Anglers in pursuit of Lake
Eries sport fish should experience another
successful year as they pursue a variety of fishing opportunities in 2015, according to Ohio
Department of Natural Resources (ODNR).
Similar to 2014, we expect fishing to be
good again this year, especially when you
consider the mix of species and sizes that are
seasonally available to Ohio anglers on Lake
Erie, said Jeff Tyson, Lake Erie fisheries
program manager for the ODNR Division
of Wildlife. While fishing success will vary
among species and seasons, the lakes population of walleye, yellow perch, black bass,
white bass and steelhead are all stable, with
a very broad distribution of sizes for each

species.
As a result of the 2015 quota allocation, the
walleye daily bag limit is four and the yellow
perch daily bag limit is 30 per angler in Ohio
waters of Lake Erie until April 30, 2015. The
daily bag limit will be six walleye from May 1
through Feb. 28, 2016. From March 1 through
April 30, 2016, the daily walleye bag limit
will be four. A 15-inch minimum size limit is
in effect during the entire season for walleye.
The yellow perch daily bag limit is 30 from
May 1 through April 30, 2016, with no minimum size limit. Lake Erie anglers can find
walleye and yellow perch bag limit information at ODNR offices, in special publications
at bait and tackle shops and at wildohio.gov.

coach Bo Ryan immediately after the

game and again Wednesday to give him
a heads-up about what he planned to
say publicly about the call. Gavitt did
not characterize the conversation as an
apology and explained Ryan was more
upset about how the game was
called rather than the one call
that has been talked about all week.
What went wrong?
John Adams, the retiring head
of college basketball referees, told
SiriusXMCollege Radio on Tuesday
that the 3-man officiating crew and the
standby official did not have access to
the same views as the television audience. So when Adams realized the call
looked wrong, he considered making a
dash to the scorers table to bring the
officials back.
Gavitt said Adams misspoke and
that the referees did have access to all
TV replays.
Adams declined an interview request.
Kim Jackson, a spokesman for
DVSport, the NCAAs replay partner
through 2019, acknowledged the referees did get access to all of CBS replays,
just not in time to make the most definitive angle available.
At that point, they had already
looked at eight or nine different angles

NFL hires Sarah Thomas,

first female official
By RACHEL COHEN
Associated Press
NEW YORK Sarah
Thomas saw the New York
City area code pop up on her
phone and started praying it
was the NFL calling to say
shed been hired as a fulltime game official.
Not because that would
make her the first woman to
hold the job. Her hopes were
those of any longtime official
on the cusp of working at the
sports pinnacle.
Thomas will be a line
judge for the 2015 season, the league announced
Wednesday. Shes proud to
serve as an example that
anyone can succeed in any
endeavor. But breaking down
barriers was just a byproduct
of her goals, not the goal
itself.
Its just a mindset of
an official that you dont
want to be seen or noticed,

Thomas said on a conference

call with reporters.
Then again, the NFL
doesnt typically host a
conference call for a newly-hired
official.
The
41-year-old Thomas
was both self-assured
and self-deprecating
in fielding questions,
unfazed by the attention but also trying
to deflect it. Shes
already become the
first female official at the
major college football level
and the first to work a bowl
game.
Thomas expects to still
wear her hair tucked inside
her cap. She started doing it
on a suggestion that it would
keep her from sticking out,
though these days its more
about habit than an attempt
to blend in.
I think my hairs the least
of my concerns, Thomas
added, laughing. I know

that I will probably stand

out being the first but as
far as players and coaches,
Ive been around a good little
while, and I think they know
who I am and just want to
make sure I can do my
job.
Thomas was in the
leagues
officiating
development program
in 2013 and 14 and has
worked at minicamps,
training camps and exhibition games. She has officiated for Conference USA
since 2007, with assignments
including the Senior Bowl,
the Pizza Bowl, the Fight
Hunger Bowl, the Medal of
Honor Bowl, and the league
championship game in 2010
and 14.
Thomas
officiated
two seasons in the United
Football League, which is
now out of business.

Penske crowding top of IndyCar, NASCAR

By STEPHEN HAWKINS
Associated Press
FORT WORTH, Texas The top of the
U.S. racing world is crowded with Roger
Penskes drivers, whether in open-wheel or
stock cars.
When Juan Pablo Montoya took the
checkered flag to win the IndyCar season
opener, he was followed immediately across
the line by his pole-sitting teammate, defending series champion Will Power.
Only one car was between them and
Team Penskes other two drivers, with Helio
Castroneves finishing fourth and Simon
Pagenaud fifth in his team debut at St.
Petersburg, Florida.
When I look at the IndyCar side, weve
got four very strong drivers. We keep finding little things and it just works together. Its
the same on the NASCAR side, Power said.
That comes from the top. Thats how Roger
runs his businesses, and thats how the racing
teams are run as well.
On the same day in Martinsville Speedway
in Virginia, Brad Keselowski finished second
just ahead of polesitter and teammate Joey
Logano in the Sprint Cup race.

So in two races over a span of hours more

than 700 miles apart, Team Penske had two
polesitters, one win and top-5 finishes for all
six of his drivers.
Thats stuff that weve never done
before, Logano said. For Team Penske to
be able to do that, that was a big deal.
Hopefully we just continue that momentum
throughout the season.
Six races into the season for NASCARs
top-tier series, Logano is second in points and
Keselowski fourth and both have already
won a race, pretty much ensuring them a spot
in the season-ending championship Chase.
After both series were off last weekend,
the Sprint Cup drivers get back at Texas,
where Logano is the defending champion
of the tracks spring race and has an average finish of 6.4 over his last five starts.
Keselowskis average finish in that span is
seventh, including third last fall.
IndyCar is in New Orleans for its inaugural race there and second race this season.
The open-wheel series last four debuts at
new tracks were won by current Penske
drivers.

time to alert them in time to come back

to the table, Jackson said, explaining
how the scorers table was in contact
with the television truck. Typically,
what is done if they want to bring them
back is they just blow the horn and have
them come back over.
Instead, nothing was done and
the game continued as Duke went
on to win its fifth national title,
beating the Badgers 68-63.
And though it wasnt only the
questionable call during the 3-week
NCAA Tournament, it could have the
most lasting impact.
Jackson said DVSport and the NCAA
have already had conversations about
how to improve the process and what
could be done if a definitive angle
comes in late but they have not yet come
up with concrete solutions.
One potential problem is the disparate amount of cameras.
While the title game had 18 different angles, Gavitt told reporters most
regular-season games only have to four
to seven meaning theres an even
greater possibility of mistakes. Tony
Dungy often cited that as a reason to
vote against replay use when he was
coaching in the NFL.

Koepka hurting as he
prepares for Masters debut
By DOUG FERGUSON
Associated Press
AUGUSTA, Ga. This wasnt how
Brooks Koepka wanted to play in his
first Masters.
Koepka is among 20 players making
their debut at Augusta National and the
course would seem to fit well with his
power. But three weeks ago, he injured
a rib in his lower left back and withdrew
during the final round of the Arnold Palmer
Invitational to rest up for the Masters.
He still was feeling it during three
days of nine-hole practice rounds.
Its not bad enough that I cant
play, Koepka said. But its not good
enough to be 100 percent.
Koepka is getting treatment daily and
said the condition improves each day.
His hope was to be close to fully healthy
by the weekend, though his first step is
to make the cut. He plays the opening
two rounds with Graeme McDowell and
Matt Kuchar.
What concerns the 24-year-old from
Florida is that he flinches as he follows
through on his swing and tends to lift
up his left arm to protect the rib, even
though that actually makes it worse.
He played a practice round with Rory
McIlroy, a good friend from their time
on the European Tour and in West Palm
Beach, Florida. Koepka added he is not
going at it full strength but I can hit a
nice poke down there and keep up with
Rory.
Koepka won the Turkish Airlines
Open last year, then picked up his first
PGA Tour victory at the Phoenix Open.
He first qualified for the Masters by

tying for fourth in last years U.S. Open

and is now ranked No. 19 in the world.
TEXAS TWO-STEP: Jordan Spieth
got a text message that already made this
a worthwhile Masters.
It was from Ben Crenshaw, checking
in to see if he was available for a practice round.
Ive always wanted to play
here with him,and to get him on his
last practice round is pretty cool,
Spieth said Wednesday after playing the back nine. He texted me
last night and I was pretty excited.
And then Tiger joined us, and it
was even better.
That would be Tiger Woods, who was
going off the front until he saw the two
Texans and joined them.
Crenshaw is a Texas legend to Spieth,
who also became a Longhorn. They
were supposed to play a practice round
last year but got rained out. Crenshaw
has announced this will be his final
Masters.
For Spieth, nine holes was enough
time to pick up a few tips from Crenshaw.
He was really helpful on the greens,
Spieth added. He would say, This one
is quicker than it looks, or This one has
a little more break. Mostly he talked
about speed.
HOW BOUT THEM DAWGS:
Expect to hear plenty of barks and
chants of Go Dawgs! from the Masters
patrons.
Six players from the nearby
University of Georgia not to mention
Patrick Reed, who started his college
career with the Bulldogs will be playing this week at Augusta.

Musings

(Continued from page 6)

That is true of any official now working and those hoping

to get hired.
If she can do so, it is a great hire. If not, not so great.
Period.

Speaking of officials and also in a story elsewhere

in todays sports section the college basketball world is
still a-buzzin regarding the continuing brouhaha regarding
Mondays nights NCAA mens national championship game,
specifically the referees and a certain blown late-game call.
In the story, the officials were taken to task for not biding
their time and getting it right by looking at every replay possible.
My sole question is this: if supposedly these were
the best officials in the mens college game this year by whatever criteria the powers-that-be use, why would they NOT be
patient on such an important call, especially since one of the
mens basketball bosses basically called one of the officials
bosses well a mis-speaker about what replays were
available?
What? Did they have late-night dates to get to?
Listen, we can still argue about whether instant replay is
a good or bad thing to use to call games but since we have
it and, for good or ill, its here to stay why not take
advantage of every angle we have and take our time with the
national championship on the line?
I admit I wanted Wiscy to win that night but I believe Id
be writing the same thing had it happened the other way with

NFL

(Continued from page 6)

If you look at Sarahs

background and her journey
to get here, this is not something that happened overnight, said Dean Blandino,
the NFLs vice president of
officiating. Shes been officiating 20 years and been on our
radar screen for 8-9 years.
Thomas worked a Ravens
preseason game last year and
coach John Harbaugh said
that she might be one of the
better ones weve had.
Shes a good ref, he
added, so it was a good
choice.

Erie

Shannon Eastin worked

regular-season NFL games
in 2012 as a replacement
official, making her the first
woman to do so in any capacity. She also was a line judge.
Thomas played softball and basketball growing up and earned a college
hoops scholarship to NAIA
University of Mobile. She
was always around football
and inspired to become an
official when she attended
a meeting with one of her
brothers. The NFL was never
the goal back then but once
she got into it, her natural
competitiveness kicked in.

Lake Erie walleye and yellow perch

fisheries are managed through an interagency quota system that involves
Ontario, Michigan, Pennsylvania, New
York and Ohio jurisdictions. Each jurisdiction regulates their catches to comply
with quotas and minimize the risk of
over-fishing these species. Quotas for
the upcoming fishing season are determined through consensus agreement by
these jurisdictions through the Lake Erie
Committee of the Great Lakes Fishery
Commission, which were just recently
announced for 2015.
Walleye: Ohio walleye anglers in
2015 will catch fish mostly from the
2011, 2010, 2009, 2007 and 2003 hatches, with some fish from the 2008 and
2012 year classes. Walleye from the
moderate 2010 hatch will range from
18-23 inches, while walleye from the
2007 hatch will be more than 20 inches.
The 2003 and 2007 hatches are likely to
carry most of the Central Basin fisheries. These walleye will contribute to the
population that has a good number of
fish over the 26-inch range. Large walleye from the strong hatch in 2003 will
continue to provide Fish Ohio opportunities (greater than 28 inches), with
this year class nearing the size that may
give Ohio a new state record walleye.
Yellow Perch: Expect good perch
fishing in 2015, with the largest fish in
the eastern areas of the Central Basin.
Perch anglers should encounter fish

That is twice as many players as any

other school.
Defending champion Bubba Watson
leads the list of Masters players who
count Georgia as their alma mater, joined
by Erik Compton, Brian Harman, Russell
Henley, Chris Kirk and Brendon Todd.
Reed initially enrolled at Georgia
before transferring to Augusta State,
leading the Jaguars to back-to-back
national championships.
The University of Georgia
is about 100 miles from Augusta
National.
Watson will be going for his third
Masters title in four years, trying to join
Jack Nicklaus, Nick Faldo and Woods
as the only golfers to win back-to-back
titles.
Compton, Harman and Todd are
playing at Augusta for the first time.
TOAST TO A CHAMPION:
Billy Casper was remembered at the
Champions Dinner.
Crenshaw was among those who told
stories about the 1970 Masters champion, who died in February at age 83.
He was a great gentleman,
Crenshaw recalled, who brought back
the description once made by the late
Dave Marr. He always said that Billy
was a really nice man. But when he got
close to the lead, he got mean. That was
perfect.
The Champions Dinner also included
a toast for 6-time champion Nicklaus,
who recently received the Congressional
Gold Medal.
The 75-year-old was saluted again
Wednesday when he made a hole-in-one
during the Par 3 Contest.

the same result.

The only thing I worry about is if they expand it even more
in line with what the New England Patriots wanted with the NFL,
a quite frankly goofy desire, that EVERYTHING be up for review
and every game takes four hours and 11 minutes plus!
Isnt technology wonderful?
This is a big positive for the University of Wyoming.
It seems the school is going to honor the scholarship the
wrestling program granted to a Nebraska high school soonto-be-graduate.
No big deal, you think until we are told that Doyle Trout
had his left leg amputated from above the knee down after a
recent car accident.
I have no idea if Trout could still wrestle with a prosthesis
at the collegiate level the initial story doesnt tell us this
but that doesnt matter to Wyoming coach Mark Branch.
Good for him and maybe this story will be an even happier one should Trout be able to wrestle.
You know, when you hear of the shenanigans of some college coaches/programs especially of yesteryear where
scholarship players are run off to make room for the newest
hot-shot, this story is one that tells us there is still integrity in
the college game.
It brings to mind the OHSAAs decision to offer wheelchair
races and championships for high school amputees, paraplegics and such for track and field.
Its a decision that you truly wish wouldnt be needed to
have but if/when tragedies like this DO happen, at least there
is the possibility of something positive coming out of this.

In 1996, Thomas became

the first woman to officiate
in a Division 1-A high school
game in Mississippi. Less
than a decade later, she was
hired by Conference USA,
working as a line judge and
head linesman.
She said she hadnt experienced any problems with
coaches or players.
Everyone has been very
professional and looked
at me as another official,
Thomas added.
NFL officials are part time,
so Thomas day job is as a
pharmaceutical representative. She was already used to a

heavy travel schedule with the

college game. Thomas and her
husband have three children:
14- and 11-year-old sons and
a 2-year-old daughter.
Like any official moving
up from the college to the pro
level, she expects the greatest
challenge will be the speed of
the game. The preseason cant
quite replicate the real thing
but she and Blandino are confident shes got the quick reaction time shell need to monitor the line of scrimmage.
Thomas got her call from
Blandino last Thursday and
she can tell you the exact
time: 10:47 a.m.

Power was three times the

IndyCar season runner-up
before winning the championship last year, when
Castroneves was second for
the fourth time in his career.
They expect Team Penske to
contend for another title in
2015.
Castroneves is a 3-time
Indianapolis 500 winner,
while Montoya won the
2000 Indy 500 and was the
Sprint Cup rookie of the year
in 2007 during his time in
stock cars for Chip Ganassi.
Pagenaud has a relationship
with former Penske driver Gil
de Ferran and finished top
five the past three seasons for
Sam Schmidt.
This is the first time Penske
has fielded four full-time cars
in the IndyCar Series.
On the Cup side, 2012
season champion Keselowski
led the series last season with
six wins, and Logano won
five times.
Logano opened this season winning the Daytona 500
and has finished top 10 in
every race. Keselowski has
five straight top 10s, including a win at California and
the second-place finish at
Martinsville.
Like Power, Logano points
to team owner Roger Penske
as the motivation.

He wants to be the best

at it, and that trickles down
to the whole company. When
your leader is like that, you
want to be like that, and it
forces you to be like that,
Logano added. Thats the
type of boss you want to
have. As a race car driver, you
want an owner thats willing
to do whatever it takes to
win races, and he wants to
have a driver with the same
attitude.
ALL-STAR CHANGES:
NASCAR is making changes
to its All-Star Race, opening
the field to more potential
drivers and adding laps to the
four segments that precede
the final 10-lap shootout for
$1 million.
The changes announced
Wednesday include letting
every former All-Star Race
winner and past Sprint Cup
champion who still race fulltime take part with race winners from the 2014 and 2015
seasons. Previously, former
All-Star winners and Cup
champions were eligible only
if they had accomplished those
feats in the past 10 seasons.
Five laps will be added
to each of the first four segments, increasing them from
20 to 25 laps. With the final
10-lap shootout, the race will
now be 110 laps.
The 31st All-Star Race is
May 16 at Charlotte.

Just hours before Mondays game, Big Ten Commissioner

Jim Delany suggested it may be time to consider taking away
replay decisions from the officials on the court. The NFL, NBA
and NHL both central command centers to make decisions and
in college football, a booth official can overturn calls on the
field.
Another concern is that many fans have already complained
about how long it takes to play the finals minutes of college
games.
But Gavitt is convinced that getting it right is more important than getting games finished fast.
We have to find the right balance. I think with the number
of camera angles, we should take a little longer, he added. I
dont think the goal should be to be perfect because I think
youre always going to have human nature and human judgment be a part of that. But wed like to get it right as much as
we can.

STOCKS

ranging from 7-13 inches from the 2012

through 2007 hatches in this years fishery, with major contributions from the
2012, 2010 and 2008 year classes. Fish
from the average-to-better hatch in 2007
will contribute fish in the greater than
10-inch range.
Black Bass: Smallmouth bass fishing in 2015 is expected to be fair but
improving. Smallmouth bass catch rates
increased in 2014 compared to 2013 and
were the highest observed since the mid1990s. Smallmouth bass caught should
be excellent size (14-22 inches, weighing up to 6 pounds). The best fishing for
smallmouth bass will continue to occur
in areas with good bottom structure,
which is the available habitat across
much of the entire Ohio nearshore area
and islands areas. Continuing the trend
from previous years, largemouth bass
fishing should be excellent in 2015.
This emerging fishery is producing high
catch rates and some large fish in nearshore areas and harbors across Ohios
Lake Erie. All black bass (smallmouth
and largemouth) must be immediately
released from May 1 through June 26.
Beginning June 27, the daily bag limit
for bass will be five, with a 14-inch
minimum length limit.
Steelhead: Steelhead anglers should
enjoy another year of great fishing in
2015 in Ohios Lake Erie open waters
and in tributaries. Peak summer steelhead action on Lake Erie can be found
offshore from June through August
between Vermilion and Conneaut, with

catches measuring 17-29 inches. Most

Lake Erie anglers troll for steelhead in
deep waters using spoons with divers
or downriggers until fish move close
to shore in the fall. The daily bag limit
remains at five fish per angler from
May 16 through Aug. 31 and two fish
per angler between Sept. 1 and May 15,
2016. A 12-inch minimum size limit is
in effect throughout the year.
White Bass: White bass continue to provide excellent seasonal fishing opportunities in the Maumee and
Sandusky rivers and in the open lake.
The 2015 catch will be dominated by
fish from the 2012, 2011 and 2010 year
classes. Fish from 2007 could be as large
as 16 inches. Anglers should focus on
major Western Basin tributaries during
May and June and nearshore areas of
the open lake during the summer. There
is no white bass daily bag limit or size
limit.
Other Species: Bays, harbors and
main lake shorelines offer excellent fishing for panfish, as well as occasional
northern pike and muskellunge in vegetated areas.
Anglers are reminded that fishing conditions on Lake Erie can change hourly and
adjustments are often necessary to improve
success. Anglers should take into account
factors such as water temperature, cloud
cover, water clarity, boat traffic, wave action,
structure, currents and the amount of baitfish
in the area. Anglers are also reminded to
carefully monitor Lake Erie weather and to
seek safe harbor before storms approach.

DEAR ABBY: Im a female
working full-time in an office
with all men. Yesterday afternoon, I ate a salad that contained
several varieties of beans. I was
standing outside my bosss office, laughing at a joke one of the
salesmen was telling when the
beans got the best of me and I
passed gas.
I was mortified and wanted to
sink through the floor! I patted
the salesman on the arm and said,
I guess thats what I think of the
joke, and walked back into my
office. I didnt know what else to
say or do. Today I cant look either of them in the face.
Since this seems to be something that happens to older people (Im 69), and its something
we often dont have total control over -- please tell me how to
recover. If this should happen
again, what on earth does one say
or do? -- BEANS, THE MUSI-

about 14 times a day -- although

probably not as spectacularly as
you did.
If it happens again, dont try to
be funny. Just say, Excuse me,
and if the toot is a fragrant one,
distance yourself. Im positive
that would be appreciated.
DEAR ABBY: We are planning to give a joint baby shower
next month for two sisters-inlaw who are expecting their babies three weeks apart. The joint
shower is a necessity because
some of the relatives will need to
travel quite a distance to attend.
Most of the guests know both
girls, but some will know only
one of them. Is there a way we
can word the invitation so these
guests wont feel obligated to
gift both babies? Any suggestions will be gratefully appreciated because we are stumped. -STUMPED IN OHIO
DEAR STUMPED: Put nothing on the invitations themselves
mentioning gifts. However, it is
acceptable to include an INSERT
along with the invitation that
states gifts for both babies are not
expected. If the shower is going
to be a large one, you could email
the guests to relay the information. However, if it will be relatively small, pick up the phone
and call.

Your willpower, courage
and determination will help
you achieve anything you
want this year. Sitting on the

activities. Bold moves will
help you further your goals.
Follow your intuition, and
dont look back.
ARIES (March 21-April

attitude, and strive to be in a
good mood. Get involved in
social events that will lead to
new friendships. An important
connection will be made.
TAURUS (April 20-May
20) -- Your quest for change
will drain your bank account.
Rather than spend money on
unnecessary items, put your
cash in a safe place. An unexpected bill will set you back.
GEMINI (May 21-June
20) -- Reflect on your current
relationships. If you feel you
may be moving in a different direction than the people
around you, you should determine what could be done to
revive the connection or move
on.
CANCER (June 21-July
22) -- Career and travel are
highlighted.
Advancement
will head your way if you are
willing to make the necessary
changes. Keep an open mind

creative talents and stretch
your boundaries. Classes that
provide you with the stimulation you crave will lead to new
friendships.
VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)

someone from your past, remember how the friendship
ended. If you want to avoid a
repeat performance, focus on
meeting someone more like
you.
LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 23)
-- Your empathetic nature
makes you a good friend.
However, you run the risk of
burning out if you try to do
too much for too many. Offer
advice without compromising
your own needs.
SCORPIO (Oct. 24-Nov.
22) -- Step into the limelight.
Your charm and talent will
impress the people you meet
along the way. An interesting
partnership is imminent. Embrace a new venture.
SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 23Dec. 21) -- Your emotions
will escalate. Avoid getting
involved in sensitive issues
that could end in a dispute.
Find a quiet corner where you
can enjoy peace and quiet and
mull over your thoughts.
CAPRICORN (Dec. 22Jan. 19) -- You stand to profit if you take advantage of a
moneymaking
opportunity.
Long-term savings or careful
investments will prove to be
lucrative and stress-free.
AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb.

Tsarnaev guilty on all charges in marathon bombing

BOSTON (AP) Dzhokhar Tsarnaev was
convicted on all charges Wednesday in the
Boston Marathon bombing by a jury that will
now decide whether the 21-year-old should
be executed or shown mercy for what his
lawyer says was a crime masterminded by his
big brother.
The former college student stood with his
hands folded, fidgeted and looked down at
the defense table in federal court as he listened to the word guilty recited on all 30
counts against him, including conspiracy and
deadly use of a weapon of mass destruction.
Seventeen of those counts are punishable by
death.
The verdict, reached after a day and a
half of deliberations, was practically a foregone conclusion, given his lawyers startling
admission at the trials outset that Tsarnaev
carried out the terror attack with his now-dead
older brother, Tamerlan.

Obama calls for end

to gay conversion
therapy for youth
WASHINGTON (AP)
President Barack Obama is
calling for an end to psychiatric therapy treatments aimed
at changing the sexual orientation or gender identity of gay,
lesbian and transgender youth.
The move comes in
response to an online petition
posted on the White House
website following the death
of 17-year-old Leelah Alcorn.
The transgender teen committed suicide in December and
left behind writings mentioning religious therapy.
In a statement late
Wednesday, White House
senior adviser Valerie Jarrett
said the administration supports banning so-called conversion therapy treatments for
minors.
We share your concern
about its potentially devastating effects on the lives of
transgender as well as gay,
lesbian, bisexual and queer
youth, Jarrett said. The
overwhelming scientific evidence demonstrates that conversion therapy, especially
when it is practiced on young
people, is neither medically
nor ethically appropriate and
can cause substantial harm.

The defense strategy is to try to save

Tsarnaevs life in the upcoming penalty phase
by arguing he fell under Tamerlans evil
influence.
The two shrapnel-packed pressure-cooker
bombs that exploded near the finish line on
April 15, 2013, killed three spectators and
wounded more than 260 other people, turning
the traditionally celebratory home stretch of
the world-famous race into a scene of carnage
and putting the city on edge for days.
Tsarnaev was found responsible not only
for those deaths but for the killing of a
Massachusetts Institute of Technology police
officer who was gunned down days later
during the brothers getaway attempt.
Its not a happy occasion, but its something, said Karen Brassard, who suffered
shrapnel wounds on her legs and attended the
trial. One more step behind us.
She said Tsarnaev appeared arrogant and

uninterested during the trial, and she wasnt

surprised when she saw no remorse on his
face as the verdicts were read. She refused
to say whether she believes he deserves the
death penalty, but she rejected the defense
argument that he was simply following his
brothers lead.
He was in college. He was a grown man
who knew what the consequences would be,
Brassard said. I believe he was all in with
the brother.
Tsarnaevs lawyers left the courthouse
without comment.
In the penalty phase, which could begin as
early as Monday, the jury will hear evidence
on whether he should get the death penalty or
spend the rest of his life in prison.
Defense attorney Judy Clarke argued at
trial that Tsarnaev was led astray by his radicalized brother, telling the jury: If not for
Tamerlan, it would not have happened. She

Witness: Officer didnt warn

man before he shot him 8 times
NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP)
An eyewitness whose cellphone video put
a South Carolina police officer in jail on a
murder charge said Wednesday that he did
not hear the white officer give any warning
before he fired eight times at the back of a
black man who can be seen in the footage
running away before he falls to the ground.
Feidin Santana told NBC News that
while walking to work Saturday morning,
he saw Officer Michael Thomas Slager
controlling Walter Lamer Scott on the
ground, and began recording when he heard
the sound of a Taser. Mr. Scott was
trying just to get away from the Taser,
said Santana, a barber originally from the
Dominican Republic. He was just looking
for a way to get away from the police.
Slager initially claimed he fired in self-defense after the suspect he had pulled over for
a broken brake light grabbed his Taser.
Santanas recording documented a different scenario. It begins at a moment when
both men are standing, as Scott pulls away
from the officer and an object appearing to
be a stun gun falls to the ground, trailing
wires. As the unarmed man runs away,
Slager then pulls out his Glock pistol and
fires eight times at the back of the 50-yearold man, until he crumples to the ground
about 30 feet away.
Santana also said he didnt see the officer render any first aid to Scott after he
was on the ground. Santana said he was so

shaken by what he had witnessed that he

initially considered erasing the video from
his phone and leaving town.
I felt that my life, with this information,
might be in danger, Santana said.
Santana said he changed his mind after
reading the version of events as recounted
by the police, which didnt match what he
had seen. He said he provided the video to
the dead mans family because he didnt
believe anything would happen to Slager if
he didnt come forward.
After the video was made public by a
lawyer representing the family on Tuesday,
Slager, 33, was swiftly fired and charged with
murder, potentially resulting in a sentence of
30 years to life in prison. A judge ordered the
ex-officer jailed without bond, pending trial.
But that did little to quell the outrage of
an angry crowd at North Charlestons City
Hall, where the mayor and police chief
were shouted down with calls of no justice, no peace.
Not once in the moments recorded by
Santana can the officer be heard yelling
stop or telling the man to surrender.
Moments after handcuffing the dying man
face-down on the ground, Slager walks
back to pick up what appears to be the
Taser, then return and drop it at Scotts
feet as another officer arrives to check the
dying mans condition. Then he picks it
up again after exchanging words with the
other officer.

repeatedly referred to Dzhokhar then 19

as a kid and a teenager.
Prosecutors, however, portrayed the brothers ethnic Chechens who moved to the
United States from Russia more than a decade
ago as full partners in a brutal and coldblooded plan to punish the U.S. for its wars in
Muslim countries. Jihadist writings, lectures
and videos were found on both their computers, though the defense argued that Tamerlan
downloaded the material and sent it to his
brother.

Obama agenda in Jamaica visit
KINGSTON, Jamaica (AP) The Caribbean region collectively cheered when President Barack Obama was first elected president in 2008. Calypso and reggae songs were written in his honor,
the French Caribbean island of Martinique named a road after him,
and Antiguas highest mountain officially became Mount Obama
as the small country saluted him as a symbol of black achievement.
The first president to visit Jamaica in three decades, Obama
arrived in Kingston Wednesday evening trying to rekindle an
enthusiasm that has waned amid a perceived lack of attention
from the American president.
Prime Minister Portia Simpson-Miller, U.S. Ambassador to
Jamaica Luis Moreno and a dozen other dignitaries greeted Obama.
The president promptly embraced the local color and one
of the islands icons, making a late evening visit to the Bob
Marley Museum. In shirt sleeves, Obama toured the museum
as Marleys hit One Love played through the sound system.
One of the rooms he explored held the late reggae stars platinum records and a Grammy award.
What a wonderful tour, he said.
Obamas trip is more than just an effort in rebuilding popularity, though. His meetings today with Simpson-Miller and
with other leaders in the 15-member Caribbean Community
are weighted with self-interest.

Answers to Wednesdays questions:

The average lobster molts (shed its shell) about
25 times before it reaches the minimum length for
harvesting in Maine. This takes between 5 and 7
years. After that, the lobster may molt only once a
year. The minimum legal length for a keeper is
3 1/4 inches, measuring from the back of the lobsters eye socket to the beginning of its tail.
