EDIT
ORIAL COMMENT
EDITORIAL

A most memorable
Bauma
Despite the travel chaos, over 416,000 visitors did make it
to Munich by the end of the show. But many expected
visitors, and quite a number of exhibitors, simply could not
get there especially from America and Asia. That was a
real shame as there was so much to see at what, in my
estimation, was the best Bauma yet.
A big topic of conversation at the show was Liebherrs
big stand with its new two storey building on stilts
surrounded by so many large machines. The result was
impressive and, after the unprecedented economic
downturn experienced by the industry, this upbeat stance
provided a welcome visual indication of optimism. A
pictorial feature showing the Liebherr stand is included in
this issue.
The Liebherr family are to be congratulated for staging such a show of strength. Whilst some observers
questioned the wisdom of constructing such a large structure, Liebherr stressed its practicality and reusability.
What many visitors did not know is that the steelwork of the modular stand structure was built at the Liebherr
factory at Biberach, Germany to keep its workers busy at a time of greatly reduced demand for the tower
cranes that are usually made there. So the company was both able to retain its skills base and get a valuable
resource which can be so effectively used at both future Baumas and other events.
There were so many new machines at Bauma that most of this issue of CP&E is devoted to a major review of
the show. Amongst the notable product launches included in this coverage are the fascinating double jib tower
crane from the GG Crane Group and the innovative CTE vehicle mounted access platform with its high level
slewing ring.
Fuel saving and emissions reductions are hot topics and there were a notable number of electric and hybrid
machines on show. Mainly displayed as prototypes, they showed how design thinking is advancing.
The general feeling was that, whilst trading conditions are still difficult in many countries, the worst of the
global downturn might be over. Business remains buoyant in China and prospects in Brazil and India are looking
better.
Bolstered up by their success at home, a significant number of Chinese construction equipment
manufacturers were showing their wares at Bauma. But machines from three Far Eastern manufacturers had to
be covered up or removed from the show after allegations were made of product copying and patent breaches.
This high profile action happened after JCB successfully applied for court orders in Germany and preliminary
injunctions were served against exhibitors who it alleged were showing backhoe loaders and telehandlers that
infringed its intellectual property rights.
The industry will be watching developments with great interest. Certainly there needs to be a level playing
field and equipment manufacturers which spend millions on research and development must be able to have
their innovative designs legally protected worldwide. Any blatant copying of another companys products,
wherever it might occur, is wrong and should not be allowed.
Whilst some companies stood accused of copying existing products, others displayed their original design
thinking for the machines of the future. Both Doosan and Volvo showed scale models of futuristic machines.
Such action is to be applauded.
Hopefully, as industry optimism increases, we might actually see fascinating concept machines in the metal
again - like the O&K Futura excavator seen at a Bauma in the past!

Finning International sells
its Hewden rental business
Whilst it remains fully committed to its UK Caterpillar
dealership, Finning International Inc of Canada has pulled out
of the rental business in the UK. It has sold the UK rental
company Hewden to the private equity group Sun European
Partners for 110.2 million.
Finning originally purchased Hewden, one of the UKs
largest rental companies, in December 2000 for 400 million.
At the time there was much speculation that the business
might be renamed the Cat Rental Store but this never
happened. In subsequent years sections of the business

sold Hewden.
Mike Waites, the President and Chief Executive Officer of
Finning International Inc, says, After a comprehensive review, we have determined that, for strategic and financial
reasons, it is in our shareholders' best interest to divest Hewden. Owning a large, short-term rental business operating
separately from our UK dealership does not now align with our strategic objectives. This sale is a continuation of our
journey towards a new Finning and the final step in rationalising our UK operations.
Hewden has 63 locations and 1,300 employees in the UK. Sun European Partners plans to work with the existing
Hewden management team which includes Director Kevin Parkes. Hewdens commercial centre in Manchester will
become its new head office.
Kevin Parkes says the Hewden brand is strong and is well positioned to benefit from the economic recovery.
Finning previously used Hewden to provide a rental route to market for Caterpillar machines and Kevin Parkes says
that a very robust strategic alliance, has been agreed between Sun and Finning but that there is no firm obligation to
buy Caterpillar products. Greater flexibility with machine purchase will help Hewden to serve long-term rental
customers who express particular brand preferences.
Whilst Finning clearly hopes to continue selling significant volumes of Caterpillar machinery to Hewden in the
future, not owning Hewden should help it sell more equipment to other UK hire companies. The UK is one of the
largest rental markets in the world and most manufacturers prefer to sell to the many rental companies there rather
than compete against them.

A surprise exhibit at the Bauma plant exhibition was a new 145 tonne 8150 hydraulic excavator produced by Eder.
This Germany company first started making excavators in 1953 and subsequently it produced machines to be sold
both as Eders and under the names of other plant makers including Caterpillar, Hanomag, Massey Ferguson and
International Harvester. In 1991 Eder was part of a joint venture that resulted in Caterpillar wheeled excavators being
produced in a Sennebogen factory in Germany.
Now, after a long absence from the excavator market, Eder is back with Walter Eder senior working with his son
who is also called Walter. Their company, Eder Holding GmbH of Munich, was proudly showing its first new era Eder
excavator at Bauma. Manufactured in Dortmund, the
machine has a 567kW (760hp) Cummins SQ23
engine, Rexroth hydraulics and Intertractor B type
tracks.
The 8150 at Bauma was equipped with a 9.0m
monobloc boom, a 3.5m dipper arm and a 9.0m
backhoe bucket. Managing Director Walter Eder aims
to build five more units this year and he also has
plans to produce a 250 tonne excavator in the future.

The Eder name is back on an excavator this is the new

The Imer Group of Poggibonsi, Italy has signed an important strategic
agreement with the German truck-mounted concrete pump maker
Waitzinger Baumaschinen GmbH. Under the deal, Imer is making truck
mounted pumps, designed by Waitzinger, at its Udine factory in Italy for sale
alongside its complementary ranges of truck mixers and other concrete
machinery.
Paolo Salvadori, Chairman of the Imer Group Concrete Machinery
Division, says, Imer now has a complete range of truck-mounted concrete
pumps designed by Waitzinger which incorporate the innovative outrigger
system patented by the German firm. Founded by Franz Waitzinger, the
company which bears his name has been producing truck mounted
concrete pumps since 1990. Now Imer has a five year plan to increase
production at its Udine factory to 300 pumps per year.
In this particular period of economic crisis, explained Imer Group
Chairman Silvano Bencini, strategic alliances enable outstanding
businesses to remain competitive on the international market, thanks to
product and process innovation. The aim is to achieve industrial synergies and to access German technology and
products of unsurpassed reliability and excellence while, at the same time, increasing business assets and the value
of the Imer Group brand.
Amongst the machines shown in Imer colours at Bauma were the R436XS and R442ST truck mounted concrete
pumps. Both have four section booms the former extending up to 36.0m and the latter to 42.0m. The XS and RT
suffixes in the model designation refer to the type of outrigger system deployed.

appeared under new ownership on one corner of the Terex stand at Bauma. They stood out as the machines livery
has changed from Terex white to the orange used when they were previously sold under the Atlas name.
The new owner of the business has been confirmed as Fil Filipov who has formed a new company in Germany
called Atlas Maschinen GmbH that is headquartered in Delmenhorst, Germany. This new business is entirely separate
from F Weyhausen GmbH & Co KG in Wildeshausen, Germany that is the long established manufacturer of Atlas
compact wheel loaders and vibrating rollers sold in orange livery.
Fil Filipov is Chairman of the Atlas Maschinen Group. He says, Atlas cranes and excavators have strong industry
recognition, a wide distribution network and quality manufacturing capabilities. The Atlas brand name and Atlas
colours will be used and no changes will be made to the current distribution network.
The Atlas Maschinen Group states that it will continue manufacturing excavators in Ganderkesee, Germany; loader
cranes in Delmenhorst, Germany and hydraulic
cylinders in Vechta, Germany. To increase
production in the Vechta cylinder plant, Fil Filipov will
be looking for additional work from outside
customers.

CP&E Contractors Plant & Equipment Vol 1 No 4

Another example of manufacturers working together to fill gaps in

their product ranges was seen at Bauma. Manitou and Terex Aerial
Work Platforms (AWP) announced the signing of a reciprocal supply
and marketing agreement under which each will supply to the other
some powered access platforms.
Terex AWP will supply versions of its 7.92m Genie GS-2668RT
and 7.9m Genie GS-3268RT diesel-engined rough terrain scissor lifts
for sale by Manitou as the 100SC and 120SC. Manitou states that it
will primarily use its dealer networks to sell these machines to end
users.
Manitou will manufacture versions of its 5.7m VJR80 and 7.9m
VJR100 self propelled vertical mast lifts for sale by Terex AWP under
its Genie brand as the models GR-20J and GR-26J. Terex AWP will
primarily focus on marketing these two platforms through its rental
channel.
Both companies will assume responsibility for the aftermarket
support for the machines they sell under their own brand name.
Initially, the agreement will be implemented in Europe (with CE
marked machines), but the intention is to widen its geographical
scope in 2011.
Tim Ford, the President of Terex AWP, says, These vertical mast
lifts are complementary to our range and give us the opportunity to go
to market quickly and offer our customers an additional, high quality,
product offering. Manitou Chief Executive Officer, Jean-Christophe
Giroux, says, This agreement makes a lot of sense as both
companies capitalize on their strengths and build on each others. Its
a pragmatic yet very promising approach, not only for our
organisations but also for our business partners and customers.

exception. However, at a time when some
other companies reduced the scale of

display of products including some very
large machines. Here CP&E pictorially

Cummins. The machine features an
advanced Liebherr drive system with
IGBT frequency inverters.

Whilst acknowledging that the worldwide economic crisis has

not yet been overcome, the privately-owned Liebherr
company with brother and sister Willi and Isolde Liebherr at
the helm - set out to stimulate further recovery at Bauma with
this most impressive stand. They said that their presentation
at Bauma should be regarded as a sign of optimism. Whilst
many visitors questioned the cost, Liebherr contended that
the new raised space made more effective use of its
exhibition plot and, as it was utilised by seven large group
companies, it was much more cost effective than having
separate stands.

biggest lattice boom crawler crane on display
was the 600 tonne capacity LR1600/2-W, which
was seen supporting the 10.0m high main hook
block from Liebherrs forthcoming 3000 tonne
capacity LR13000 crawler crane. This hook
block weighs 110 tonnes and the new machine
which will carry it is now being assembled for the
first time at the Liebherr factory at Ehingen,
Germany.

The new 45 tonne LTC1045-3.1 all terrain crane was

displayed at Bauma in a distinctive black livery. This
three axle city crane has a 36.0m main telescopic boom
and an innovative single control cab. For road travel, the
cab is extended forwards and downwards from the
crane superstructure to rest on the front nearside corner
of the 6x6 carrier. As could be seen at Bauma, the cab
can be hydraulically raised to provide the crane operator
an elevated view of lifting operations. Maximum height of
the operators eyes when the cab is fully raised is 7.8m.

operate only with a two-fall hook block. It has a Micromove
mode that reduces the hoisting speed to 25% of the maximum
for the precise placing of heavy loads.

Amongst a sizeable number of new machines for materials

handling was a new version of the L580 2plus2 wheel
loader specially configured for the timber industry. The new
L580 2plus2 LogHandler was displayed at Bauma with a
3.2m capacity timber grapple and a hydraulically

BA
UMA 2010 REVIEW
BAUMA

As was predicted in previous issues of CP&E, Liebherr used Bauma to unveil the first of its new line
of articulated dumptrucks. Nick Johnson reports on the new TA230 Litronic.

Liebherr reveals first of new ADT range

It has been an open secret for many years that Liebherr has been developing a range of articulated dumptrucks
(ADTs) and, at this Bauma, the first of the new line was unveiled. This turned out to be the TA230 Litronic which has
a payload of 30 tonnes rather than a higher capacity 50 tonner that will appear later.
Having been an advocate of hydrostatic transmissions in machines such as wheel loaders and bulldozers, Liebherr
was tipped to introduce this drive system in its new ADTs. However, after extensive field tests with hydrostatic
prototypes, Liebherr has decided to launch the TA230 with a standard drive train.
According to Liebherr, it has found that hydrostatic drive is not an optimal solution in ADTs for standard
earthmoving. But the company considers that hydrostatic drive does offer great advantages for these machines in very
hard conditions and it is still developing the concept.

Rental route to market

The new TA230 Litronic articulated dumptruck is being manufactured at the
Liebherr factory in Kirchdorf/Iller, Germany. The new model line will initially
be available as an addition to the equipment rental fleet of the Europe-wide
Liebherr-Mietpartner organisation (where Bell ADTs can currently be found).
This will allow potential customers to evaluate the new ADTs on site without
an obligation to buy.
The programme of Liebherr ADTs will soon be extended to include two
more models with payloads of 40 and 50 tonners. The intermediate machine
will appear next.
Liebherr contends that the TA230 combines the compact transport
dimensions of a 25 tonne payload machine with the payload of the nexthigher category. The machines transport width is a slim 2960mm but its skip
capacity is a high 19.2m - claimed to be the largest in its class.
The TA230 is powered by a 10.5 litre Liebherr D936LA6 water-cooled 6cylinder turbocharged engine. This proven engine, which meets the Stage
IIIA / Tier 3 emissions requirements, is the same type as that used in the

Liebherr Group Proprietor Willi Liebherr has confidently introduced the new
TA230 as part of a policy to broaden the product range despite the recession.

companys L566, L576 and L580 wheel loaders and its R/A944 and
R/A954 excavators.

ZF powershift transmission
The drive train in the TA230 incorporates a ZF electronically controlled,
automatic powershift transmission and torque converter with lock-up
clutch. The machine has eight forward gears (allowing a maximum travel
speed of 57km/h) and four reverse gears (with speed limited
electronically to 16km/h).
For the axles and brakes on this 6x6 ADT, Liebherr has sourced
Kessler components. The rocker arm style front axle has two hydropneumatic cushioning cylinders to provide front suspension and there is
a self-locking transverse differential. The heavy-duty rear axles have
self-locking transverse differentials with a lock value of 40%.
The TA230 has an oil-cooled wet brake system acting on the front
and centre axles. There is also an engine brake and a transmission
retarder that acts on all wheels. The parking brake is a spring applied
(hydraulically released) disc brake which acts on the driveshaft to the
rear axles.
The ROPS/FOPS cab features closed pressure ventilation and
provides good visibility through its large area tinted safety glass
windows. To allow service access underneath, the cab can be tilted
electro-hydraulically 45 to the right.

Rear view camera image in cab

The 30 tonne capacity body shown here at
Bauma with the optional tailgate is raised up
in 12 seconds using long stroke Liebherr
cylinders.

The front grill and bonnet can be quickly raised

up electro-hydraulically to provide access to
the 270kW (367hp) Liebherr D936LA6 engine.

The operator gets a fully adjustable seat and there is a well-positioned

touch screen display console. This display can show the image supplied
by the reversing camera, which is standard equipment, or actual
temperatures, engine speed, air conditioning settings, time display,
number of dumping operations or daily operating hours.
The TA 230, like all Liebherr machines, reflects the Groups policy of
manufacturing components in-house for the key technologies. Therefore
it utilises Liebherr hydraulic cylinders for steering the truck and tipping
its body.
Additionally, the machines electronics incorporate a large number of
modules manufactured in-house. These include the central machine
computer, the I/O units and the built-in service and diagnostic systems.
The TA230 displayed at Bauma was equipped with the optional
tailgate. This automatically rises up to allow a clean discharge of the
body. The maximum tipping angle is 70 and the body lifts in 12
seconds and lowers in eight seconds.
The new ADT comes as standard with 23.5R25 earthmoving radial
tyres. Special 750/65R25 tyres are available as an option. The machine
has two dual acting steering cylinders that allow the front of the truck to
be articulated 45 to either side. Oscillation is provided by a Liebherr ball
bearing ring.
Whilst the articulated dumptruck market has been depressed due to
the global economic crisis, Liebherr is determined to enter what has
been a very competitive market with some very long established players.
Placing the initial units with its rental partners is a logical move and it will
be interesting to see how this may eventually lead to end user sales as
the business climate improves.
As Liebherr has proved to be good at engineering its products to
address niche markets, it would be logical for different versions of this
machine to appear in the future. The obvious development would be a
hook lift body to handle the containers used for waste. [CP&E]

incorporated into their design.
Visually the new models are distinguished by not only the companys new machine branding but also a re-styled
front counterweight and grill with vertical pressings. There is also a distinctive new slim line roof design and enhanced
lighting package. Sharper lines on the excavator and loader profiles contribute to a modern, robust appearance.

Better protected front end

The new front counterweight and sloping grill have been designed to better protect the machine from front-end impact
damage. The grill also allows increased airflow for engine cooling and the design allows for the use of a Tier 4 engine.
The bonnet is now self-raising and it provides better and easier service access.
Revisions to the cab include independently adjustable working lights at the front and rear, improved rainwater runoff channels in the roof (to prevent water collection) and the option of a heated front screen to quickly clear misting
and frost. JCB has adopted a black interior in the lower half of the cab (including the seat) while the pillars and roof
lining are a lighter grey and the redesigned steering wheel has a new covering for better grip.
However, the most significant changes are under the skin of the new generation 3CX and 4CX backhoe loaders.
The new features include an improved hydraulic system for more
economical digging and there are new power brakes with an
automotive feel.
The machines utilise a new EcoDig hydraulic system with three
(rather than two) hydraulic pumps to provide the same hydraulic
output but at lower engine speeds. This arrangement is claimed to
deliver average fuel savings of up to 15%. Operators are able to
select from two working modes, either Eco mode or low flow, to
optimise productivity and improve machine control.
A secondary benefit of the three-pump design is faster
performance of the Extradig extending dipper stick, further
boosting productivity. The new hydraulic system and lower engine

speeds also contribute to a cut in exhaust

emissions and a reduction in overall
machine noise levels, both inside the cab
and externally.

EcoRoad and SRS boost

to productivity
The new backhoes come with the existing
EcoRoad options of Smooth Ride System
(SRS) and TorqueLock to help boost
productivity still further. TorqueLock is said
to reduce fuel consumption by up to 25%

productivity and operator comfort.
Power brakes are to be introduced on
both the new generation 3CX and 4CX
models. The system provides proportional braking throughout the pedal travel, providing operators with improved
braking and reduced effort.
JCB has also redesigned the pedal box in the backhoe loader cab, with an automotive style position that improves
ergonomics. The power brake design ensures that there is full brake pad release when the driver comes off the pedal.
This enables operators to better maintain roading speeds and contributes to a further 1% saving in fuel consumption.
By using the machines hydraulic system to supply oil for the power brakes, there is no requirement for separate
brake reservoirs. This simplifies service and reduces the number of daily checks for the driver.

Enhanced pushing and hill climb performance

JCBs EcoRoad package of options adds to the enhanced productivity. The return-to-dig feature automatically resets
the loader bucket to dig position, saving time and effort; the transmission disconnect diverts hydraulic power to the
loader for faster lifting, while the Hydraulic Speed Control (HSC) gives more tractive effort when loading. In addition,
high engine torque at low revs enhances pushing and hill climbing performance whilst the limited slip differentials
(LSD) provide extra traction in challenging conditions.
To aid operation in cold winter weather, the cab gets a heated front screen said to be an industry first on a
backhoe loader. The operator can also be warmed up if the machine has been purchased with the new option of an
integrated hot drinks machine. This extra is the modern equivalent of the in-cab electric kettle originally offered as an
extra by JCB founder Joe Bamford back in 1964 when he launched the 3D backhoe loader!
A new combined hammer and bidirectional auxiliary circuit on the new 3CX and 4CX backhoes makes the fitting
of attachment power circuits easier. The circuit has been designed to provide low flow and high flow on both fixed and
extending dipper variants. There is also the option of a new 9.0m hose reel on the Hand Held Tool Circuit, that allows
contractors to use hydraulic power tools alongside the backhoe loader, removing the need for separate power packs.
A new attachment option for the rear backhoe is a trencher supplied to JCB by Auger Torque. At Bauma this
trencher was displayed on the dipper arm of
a 4CX Super Sitemaster. Alongside this
exhibit was a beautifully preserved example
of one of its JCBs original backhoe loaders
dating from 1953. Tim Burnhope says, JCB
has been at the forefront of backhoe loaders
design for almost 60 years. Now, whether
loading, roading or digging, our latest
generation models offer the customer a
machine that works harder but uses less
fuel. [CP&E]

Having originally revealed a pre-production Dash 9 excavator at Conexpo two years ago, Hyundai
used this Bauma to internationally launch a full line of these new generation machines as well as
similarly upgraded wheel loaders. Nick Johnson reports.

Hyundai showcases Dash 9 excavators

and loaders
The desire of the South Korean
company Hyundai to become a much
bigger player, the construction
equipment sector was evident at
Bauma where its stand provided the
international launch pad for many new
generation machines. These included
not only the full Dash 9 excavator line
as expected but also pre-production
versions of new Dash 9 wheel loaders.
Hyundai first revealed its Dash 9
plans at the Conexpo exhibition in Las
Vegas during March 2008 when a preproduction R210LC-9 tracked
excavator was on show. Intermat in
Paris last year saw the pre-production
versions of new R16-9 and R27Z-9

units previously sourced from Nagano
in Japan.
The switch of larger Hyundai excavators from Dash 8 to Dash 9 has taken longer than originally envisaged due to
the dramatic reduction in sales volumes experienced by all construction equipment makers in the last couple of years.
It took time to work through stocks of Dash 8 models but now Hyundai is looking forward and its new Dash 9
machines show the way.

Worlds largest ship builder

Interestingly, construction equipment only represents 8.9% of the turnover of Hyundai Heavy Industries. But this is a
big group which has become the worlds largest ship builder and gains other significant chunks of its turnover from
offshore and engineering activities as well as electrical systems.
Hyundai Heavy Industries created its construction equipment division in 1985. Now (excluding China) it claims to
be 6th place in the world market for both crawler excavators and wheel loaders. The company makes construction
equipment not only in its native South Korea but also in China and India and a new production plant is currently being
constructed in Brazil.
China now the largest slice (48%) of Hyundais
construction equipment turnover, with South Korea
second (18%), Europe third (6%), North America
fourth (3%) and India fifth (2%). The companys
construction equipment range mainly includes
hydraulic excavators and wheel loaders but it also
makes skid steer loaders and it recently introduced
two backhoe loaders in Korea one HB90 centre
mount model and one HB100 side shift model.
Hyundai is also a large producer of industrial forklifts.

UMA 2010 REVIEW
BAUMA
Hyundai has entered the demolition
excavator market with this 58-59 tonne
R520LC-9 DM that reaches up to 26.15m.

The Hyundai backhoe loaders are not yet available in Europe so the
focus of the companys Bauma stand was the Dash 9 excavators and
wheel loaders. Now armed with its new generation machines and
expectations of a more positive market, Hyundai hopes to sell
approximately 1100 items of construction equipment in Europe
roughly equal to 2003 levels. Last year sales were some 750 a big
drop from the 2007 peak of 3200.
Product Engineer Joacim Van de Perre says that customer
comments have played a major part in developing the previous 7-A
series machines. The new Dash 9 models have been designed to
reduce fuel consumption, improve operator comfort and controllability.
The excavators gain a new LED display with a big toggle switch that
allows the operator to easily select different functions. The display can
show the view from the machines rear view camera, as well as
allowing the selection of power and work modes. The system allows
maintenance checks, fault diagnostics and theft protection.

Cummins and Mitsubishi engines

The standard sized Dash 9 excavators weighing over 19.0 tonnes have
Cummins engines whilst some of the 13 to 19 tonners have Mitsubishi
power units. A feature of the 21-25 tonne models is a new patented
Posi-Nega hydraulic system said to combine the controllability benefits of a sophisticated positive system with the
servicing benefits of a technically less complex negative system.
With the Posi-Nega system the boom up and arm in movements (where the best response time is required) are
positively controlled with pilot pressure influencing pump regulation. Other operations are negatively controlled
whereby the hydraulic flow through the main control valve influences pump regulation.
The range of tracked Dash 9 excavators now includes a new 14.6 tonne short tail model. This R145LCR-9 has an
89.0kW (119hp) Mitsubishi D04FD-TAA engine and it can dig down to 5.5m.
The biggest Hyundai tracked excavator is the 51.0 tonne R520LC-9 and this is now also available as a DM
demolition machine. Weighing around 58.0 tonnes, the new R520LC-9 DM has a tilting cab, a retractable
undercarriage and a special four-piece demolition boom that provides a maximum vertical reach of 26.15m. This
machine is powered by a 266.0kW (357hp) Cummins QSM 11 engine.

Wheeled materials handler with elevating cab

As well as entering the demolition excavator market, Hyundai has added a 21 tonne wheeled materials handler. The
R210W-9MH features four stabilisers, an elevating cab and a special straight boom and curved arm to provide a
maximum lift height of 12.2m and a maximum outreach of 10.8m. The machine at Bauma was equipped with a multitine grab from Arden Equipment.
The pre-production Dash 9 wheel loaders at Bauma were the models HL740-9 (2.4m bucket class), HL757-9
(2.8m), HL760-9 (3.3m), HL770-9 (4.2m) and HL780-9 (5.4m). These machines all feature the latest Tier 3
compliant Cummins common rail fuel injection engines and fully automatic ZF transmissions with 4-step mode
selection.
The Dash 9 loaders gain an updated Rexroth
hydraulic system with a new variable displacement
pump and automatic load sensing. The operator
gets a new dashboard and the ability to select Eco,
Standard or Power operating modes and Manual,
Auto-Light, Medium or Heavy transmission modes.
Field tests with an HL757-9 have revealed fuel
saving of 10-15% compared to a similar sized Dash
7A machine. Prototype testing and field trials have
been completed and the first production Dash 9
wheel loaders are due to be released to the market
later this year. [CP&E]

An interesting prototype displayed by this
innovative Italian company was what it proclaimed
to be the worlds first Eco-Handler. Being
developed in conjunction with the Mechanical
Engineering Department of Turin Polytechnic, the
Panoramic P41.7 Hybrid telehandler at Bauma had
two power sources a 55kW (73.8hp) Kubota diesel and a 50kW (67.1hp)
brushless, permanent magnet electric motor/generator with lithium batteries. This
machine has a maximum lift height of 7.0m and can carry up to 4100kg.
Three patents are pending on the clever design with its power split system
which allows the operator of the Eco-Handler to select the appropriate power
source combination to suit specific applications. It is claimed that the
EcoPowerDrive transmission promises a 20% reduction in fuel consumption.
In Diesel Always On mode, the transmission of the Eco-Handler is fed by
the diesel engine and the electric motor drive (from the lithium batteries). This
combination makes some 100kW (to provide the same performance such as a
maximum 40 km/h travel speed as the conventional Panoramic P41.7
hydrostatic handler).
When Hybrid mode is selected, the Eco-Handlers diesel engine runs at
idle and is available on demand either to provide direct power or to charge the
battery. The system cleverly chooses the method of greatest efficiency and least
emissions. Power can be applied solely to the driveline or split between the
driveline and the machines hydraulics with any excess power used to recharge
the battery.
By selecting the Full Electric mode, the diesel engine is turned off and
only the electric motor powers the machine. This mode is appropriate for indoor
operation or where there is the need to provide quiet, emission free operation.

class. The Hybrid can be charged from the mains and the company is looking at a
version that can be electrically powered via a cable suitable for use in waste
transfer stations.
Another new concept machine being developed by Merlo is
the C25.5 compact tracked Panoramic telescopic handler.
Weighing around 4000kg, this interesting compact machine has a
75kW (100.6hp) turbo diesel engine and a hydrostatic
transmission. Equipped with a fork carriage common to the
wheeled P25.6, the new tracked variant has a boom similar to
that used on the P32.6 to provide a maximum lift height of 5.0m
and a maximum capacity rating of 2500kg.
The C25.5s tracked undercarriage, which has been designed
and made in-house by Merlo, features oscillating bottom rollers
and 450mm wide rubber tracks. The drive train to each track
utilises a variable displacement hydraulic pump powering a fixed
flow motor attached to an epicyclic gearbox. Controlled from a
spacious cab, the machine can travel at speeds of up to 15km/h
and make spin turns.

A particular talking point at Bauma 2010 was the new GG42085e-Tronic flat top twin jib tower crane. This intriguing
machine has two diametrically opposed jibs each with its own independently controlled trolley and lifting hook. A swivel
seat in the special double screen cab allows the single operator to control the two hooks, one at a time, as required.
Another unique feature of the GG crane is that its slewing is achieved by means of two electric motor driven
propellers at the end of each jib. This method of powered rotation and braking should greatly reduce the torsion on the
tower but the propellers sound rather like a helicopter.
The GG42085e-Tronic at Bauma was fitted with two 85.0m long jibs which each provided a maximum working
radius of 82.5m. Maximum capacity of this model is 16 tonnes on each jib and a load of 2.2 tonnes can be lifted at
maximum radius. Interestingly this double jib tower crane concept was first developed in Belgium in the late 1960s by

with jib of up to 150m on either side of the central tower.
The special sections in the GG machine include the two way facing cab with swivel seat, the central flat top section
that connects the twin jibs and the two jib end sections with their propeller assemblies. The crane has cameras on
each trolley and there are two safe load indicator systems to ensure safe lifting on each jib.
The logic is that, by having two jibs, each with their own independently controlled trolley and hook, a time efficiency
of 50 to 60% can be achieved. The company sees potential for its machine on construction projects such as cooling
towers as well as harbour work and offshore applications.

steelworks.
The B25D hooklift ADT presented at Bauma has been developed in close co-operation with Bell Equipments South
African headquarters and the European production facility in Eisenach, Germany. The project was initiated and
supervised by Bell France in association with the technology partner Guima-Palfinger that has supplied the G30 Palift
hook lift system. This equipment suitable for moving containers with lengths from 5.0m to 7.0m - can also now be
supplied on the larger B30D chassis.
To carry the G30 Palift system, the standard chassis frame of Bell the 205kW (275hp) B25D and 240kW (322hp)
B30D is increased in length by 1500mm. As the G30 system only weighs around 3000kg, the B25D and B30D hooklift
trucks have unladen weights of only 17.72 and 20.1 tonnes respectively. To maximise stability when loading and
unloading laden containers the Bell trucks have an hydraulically lockable oscillation joint.
The capacity of the G30 Palift equipment is 21.8 tonnes on the B25D and 25.8 tonnes on the B30D. The hooking
height is adaptable to 1425 mm and 1570 mm and therefore suitable for containers following DIN 30722 and French
FN 17-107. Accordingly, the hydraulically activated container locking devices (rear/front) are adaptable. All the
hydraulic functions, including the container locking devices (rear/front), are powered by the Bell hydraulic system and
the control system is fully integrated into the host trucks CANbus-based electronics.

ADT
The Danish construction equipment maker
Hydrema used Bauma to display the latest
versions of its two and three axle articulated
dumptrucks (ADTs) as well as a new road/rail
variant.
Road/rail Hydremas have previously utilised a
rail wheel conversion from an external company
but now the 912DS Rail is a complete unit
produced in-house by Hydrema itself.
The 912DS Rail is a two axle ADT with
hydraulic front suspension and Hydremas factory
fitted rail wheel system. The truck shown at
Bauma had an 8000kg capacity swivel skip that
enables its load to be discharged over the rear or
through a 90 arc to either side. The rail wheel
assemblies are bolted to the chassis and fitted
with hydraulic quick couplings to allow easy
conversion back to a standard machine.
The two rail wheel bogies are operated from the
cab by means of the joystick in the right hand
armrest. The machine comes with a camera
system to aid positioning the rail wheels onto the
track and also eight Megabeam working lights.
Hydrema was also exhibiting the latest D
series of its three-axle 20 tonne capacity 922 ADT.
This machine now has the newest generation
Hydrema cab and a hydraulic retarder. Its
powertrain utilises a 194kW (264hp) Cummins
QSB Stage IIIA compliant engine and a ZF
Ergopower 6WG210 automatic transmission.
The D series cab has visco-elastic suspension
and a robust climate-control system. The
operator also benefits from the provision of an air
suspension seat and a refrigerated storage space.
Also prominent on the Hydrema stand was the
companys D912 HM High Mobility two axle
ADT which was getting its International launch.
Resplendent in a striking black livery with a
picture of a standard yellow machine on the side
of its skip, this 4x4 ADT was displayed on
Astroturf to emphasise its extremely low ground
pressure.
The 912D MH is a 10.0 tonne payload machine
with the choice of a standard rear tip or a swivel
tip skip. It has a 96.0kW (131hp) Perkins E110D44TA Stage IIIA compliant engine and a ZF
WG115 Ergopower fully automatic transmission.
When shod with 800mm wide Trelleborg 800/
45x30.5 tyres, the dumptruck has a low ground
pressure of only around 85kPa. This makes it very
suitable for work on ground sensitive areas such
as golf courses.

manufactured by Demlone. The DEM50 offers a
maximum working height of 23.0m and can carry a work
tool weighing up to 3000kg throughout most of its
working range.
The DEM 50 is the first machine resulting from a
close cooperation between Caterpillar and Demlone, a
subsidiary of a French demolition equipment specialist
Vensys Group. The new machine utilises the
strengthened base unit of the Caterpillar 336D L
demolition duty hydraulic excavator with the option of
fixed or variable width undercarriages. Demlone
manufactures the high-rise front-end working equipment
and assembles the completed machine.
The use of a modular boom with 3.0m and 5.0m
inserts allows the DEM50 to be rigged to provide
alternative maximum working heights of 18.0m, 21.0m or
23.0m. The machine is equipped with a hydraulic quick
coupler on the top of its boom foot, with the lower pins
being controlled hydraulically from the cab.
All of the hydraulic hoses between the boom foot and
the main boom sections are equipped with quick
couplers, so that the boom configuration can be
changed in 20 minutes, far less than the 3-4 hours of
previous machines. A standard reach backhoe boom can
also be supplied as an option, using the same rapid-fit
pin system.

machines have a Tier 3 certified Case 6.7 litre
engine with power ratings of 107.0kW (144hp) and 88.0kW (118hp). In both cases peak torque arrives at just
1400rpm. The resulting powerful low down torque characteristics are ideal for dozing applications.
The engine power is sent to the tracks through a dual path PowerStat hydrostatic transmission, utilising variable
axial piston pumps and motors to provide a maximum drawbar pull of 275.1kN in the larger machine and 213.5kN in
the 1150K. As the transmission delivers drive to each track independently, it is possible to continue to push at full
power throughout a turn, offering the operator maximum control for fine grading and for slope work. The transmission
has a single joystick drive control and the operator can choose infinite speed adjustment up to 9.7km/h, or opt for one
of 10 pre-set speed increments, to suit the application.
The three track options available for both the 1150K and 1650L are Extra Long Track (XLT), Wide Track (WT) and
Low Ground Pressure (LGP).
Both bulldozers have the Case Lubricated Track system, which is sealed and lubricated with an oil reservoir in
each pin. An optional Case Extended Life Track, with a second hardened bushing, is available to extend track life in

The third new Schwing concrete pump at Bauma was the
compact S20 City which, with a 20.0m vertical reach placing boom,
can be carried on a 4299mm wheelbase, 15 to 18 tonne GVW truck.
The unit at Bauma was on a MAN TGM18.280 4x2 truck chassis with
an outrigger spread of only 3.85m. Its 20RZ four-section boom has a
low unfolding height of only 3.85m.
The C20 City can have a concrete pump with a maximum
theoretical output of 163m/h at a pressure of 85 bar. If a placing
boom is not required, the pump (together with delivery pipes able to
provide a line length of up to 260.0m) can be carried on a 12.0 tonne
GVW truck.
Schwing also displayed its new SPB 32 independent placing

vehicle
access platform from CTE
In an interesting move to build up interest, CTE kept its latest platform
well wrapped up until the afternoon on the third day of Bauma. When
the covers were removed, visitors were able to see that the new Lift
20.13MP Multi-Purpose platform was indeed something different.
What sets the Lift 20.13MP Multi-Purpose platform apart from
competitors is that its turntable is not on the vehicle deck (as is
conventional) but on top of a two section telescopic boom. With the
non-rotating base boom retracted and stowed along the vehicle deck,
the upper section boom operates like a normal straight telescopic
boom platform to achieve a maximum working height of around
13.0m.
When maximum working height (of almost 20.0m) or up and over
capability (up to 10.0m with a clear outreach of 9.1m) is required, the
base boom is angled up and telescoped out. In the latter
configuration, the cage can clear an 8.9m obstacle. Cage capacity is
200kg.
The clever design of the Lift 20.13MP

wheels with the lower boom stowed to
achieve a maximum working height of

is unrestricted up to 12.0m. The machine can be
powered by either a Kubota diesel or a Honda

New Linden Comansa

luffing jib tower cr

crane
The Spanish tower crane maker Linden Comansa used
Bauma 2010 for the worldwide launch of the first of its new
series of luffing jib tower cranes. The model on show was
the LCL 190 which comes in two versions to provide a
maximum capacity of 12.0 or 18.0 tonnes.
The LCL 190 can be erected with a minimum jib length
of 30.0m. Extra radius can be obtained by adding 5.0m jib
inserts. The maximum jib length for this crane is 60.0m
and it can lift either 1500kg or 1300kg (standard or heavy
lift version) at maximum radius. The maximum
freestanding tower height of the standard version is 49.5m
when erected with on a 6.0m square base cross with
levelling jacks.
The hoist winch of the LCL190 is positioned in front of
the jib pivot point rather than on the short (7.3m long)
counter jib. Both the hoist and luffing ropes come on their
respective winches from the factory to help speed site
installation.
The LCL190 has an automatic level luffing system so
that hook height removes constant as the jib is raised or
lowered to alter working radius. There is an hydraulic
damper to prevent the jib from being raised too high and

Cranes
After a long period of development, Terex Cranes got its new flagship
AC1000 telescopic crane ready for a public launch at Bauma. This 1200
tonne class machine is billed as the most powerful all-terrain crane that
can travel on the road with its main telescopic boom still connected. It is
also said to have the fastest set-up time in its class.
The AC1000 has a 18x8x18 drive / steer carrier powered by a 480kW
(653hp) Daimler engine with a ZF TC-Tronic HD automated gearbox with
an integrated torque converter and hydraulic retarder. Axles 2, 3, 5 and 6
are driven and the 3.0m wide crane has a maximum road travel speed of
45.0km/h.
Depending on axle load limits, the crane can travel on the road with
either its 50.0m long five section heavy duty HA50 boom or, with four
additional telescopic sections, its maximum 100.0m HA100 boom.
Maximum individual axle loads with the 50.0m boom carried are 12.0
tonnes whilst moving with the full 100.0m boom in place increases
individual axle loads to a maximum of 16.5 tonnes.
For road travel the AC1000 is moved without its rear outriggers and

tip height of 163.3m.
The crane operators superstructure cab tilts upwards by 20 and
inside there is an integrated touch-screen control system showing
information on wind speed/direction, hook load, nominal load capacity, reach and boom length. The system also
displays calculated and actual outrigger loads. The crane has an integrated working range limiter allowing "virtual
walls" to be set to prevent collisions.
One of the first purchasers of the new AC1000 is UK-based Ainscough Crane Hire. It has two units on order with
the first due in the last quarter of this year and the second expected next year.
Terex also showed the new long boom version of its 100 tonne capacity four axle all terrain crane.
Designated the AC 100/4L, this compact machine can travel on the road with its 59.4m long telescopic boom
and a 19.0m double lattice fly jib whilst still not exceeding 12 tonne
axle loads. Other new exhibits were the latest generation carrier and
crane cabs.

self-erector
Manitowoc has introduced a completely redesigned and updated
cab for its Potain tower cranes. Called Ultra View, the new cab has
been designed to provide the Potain crane operator with more
comfort and better jobsite visibility. It has air conditioning as
standard.
The new Ultra View cab is designed to fit all new Potain cranes
an operational advantage for fleet owners. The cab is being
phased in across the Potain range and it will replace the existing
Vision cab that was introduced in the year 2000.
One of the key design features of the Ultra View cab is the
relocation of the electrical control panel to a dedicated space
outside and behind the cab. Relocating the electrical components
frees up space allowing room for a small table, storage for technical
documents and three plugs with 220V or 110V power options. It
also reduces noise from electrical contactors and frequency
converters that can be heard when these components are inside
the cab.
Potains latest new Igo T130 self-erecting crane can be fitted
with the Ultra View cab. This large self-erector has a maximum
lifting capacity of 8.0 tonnes, a maximum radius of 50.0m and, with
its jib horizontal, a maximum lift height of 37.3m. The use of 6.0m
long tower sections reduces erection time.

Replacing the former BR3890 (G90

BR4099 can be purpose-matched to

using a simple working mode
selector.

As well as its new series of small BR111, BR222 and BR333 hydraulic
breakers for mini excavators (described in the previous issue of CP&E),
Sandvik also showed larger new breakers at this Bauma. Designed around a
new operating principle that can be matched to specific applications, the
larger duo are the BR3288 and BR4099. They weigh 2350kg and 3380kg
respectively and are suitable for carriers in the 27 to 40 tonne and 30 to 60
tonne operating weight ranges.
The new operating principle enables stroke length, blow energy and
Sandviks idle blow protector to all be easily modified to allow the breakers to
be matched to individual carriers and applications. A working mode selector is
located on the breaker.
When high energy mode is chosen the breaker uses a lower blow
frequency for optimum breaking power in hard materials, such as granite and
reinforced concrete foundations. The selection of the high frequency mode
delivers a higher blow rate and reduced impact energy to break softer
materials, such as limestone. The Idle Blow Protector works regardless of
working mode to provide greater levels of protection.
The new BR4099 and BR3288 models feature Sandviks VIDAT
(Vibration Dampened Tierods) system that has been designed to improve
reliability. They also have a more robust front head which is produced using
new manufacturing techniques and features fewer holes to relieve stress.
Additionally, their tool-retaining pins are locked by simple, reliable rubber rings;
while the surface of the lower tool bushing has been specifically designed to
provide longer tool life.

Komatsu shows high cab handler

Amongst the latest products being shown by Komatsu at Bauma was the PW180-7 wheeled excavator with a new
fixed raised cabin for waste handling operations. On this 16.0-18.4 tonne machine, the cab can be raised by 1200mm
compared to the standard model. Alternative elevated cab height increases are 400mm and 1200mm.
The fixed height raised cab on the PW180-7 protrudes slightly further forward than the standard cab in order to
give the operator a better view of high level waste handling operations. An access step aids entry to the raised cab
and operation in dusty waste transfer stations is aided by a reversible radiator cooling fan and the provision of Turbo II
pre-cleaners.
Komatsu also showed its recently upgraded WA470-6 and WA480-6 wheel loaders that weigh 23.0 and 25.5
tonnes respectively. With power ratings of 202kW (272hp) and 224kW (300hp), the latest versions are fitted with a
new driveline that incorporates a large
capacity torque converter (LC) to improve and
provide initial rimpull-to-weight ratio.
The efficiency of the upgraded WA470-6
and WA480-6 wheel loaders is further
enhanced by a load-sensing hydraulic system
that features electronically controlled variable
displacement pumps for the work equipment
and the hydraulic steering. There are also new
safety features including an electrical tilting
step, a safety belt warning system and a
remote-controlled step light.

operator has the choice of fully electric, hybrid or diesel electric drive and the 6x4 chassis has a creep speed for
manoeuvring on site. When using the electric drive for quiet, low emission urban travel, the machines range is said to
be around 96km.
The 87 metre.tonne self-erecting crane provides a maximum capacity of 7.0 tonnes. It can lift 2.0 tonnes at its
maximum radius of 36.0m and its maximum height under hook, with jib horizontal, is 28.5m. With the jib fully luffed,
maximum lifting height increases to 53.2m.
An interesting feature of the SK387-AT3 City Boy tower crane is that it has only one cab. For road travel the cab is
positioned well forward on the near side of the chassis. On site the seat is swivelled through 180 to facilitate crane

exhibition halls at the show. A huge banner showing a volcano
erupting mirrored real life as the spectacular plume of ash
streamed out of the volcano erupting beneath Iceland's

The latest crusher bucket from MB is its model BF90-3. This bucket weighs 3500kg
and is suitable for excavators weighing over 20 tonnes. It has a capacity of 0.8m and an
opening of 900mm by 510mm. The bucket can be fitted with a magnet to collect steel
debris such as rebar.
MB also exhibited its new coupling device for use on excavators. The device on show
was a manual coupler but a hydraulically operated version is planned. The MB coupler has two pins carried on hinged
side connection plates that latch into hooks carried on a plate secured to the top of a bucket or other excavator
attachment. Bolts are used to mechanically lock the side plates of the manual coupler in place.
MB states that its new coupler weighs up to 50% less than other more complex couplers and that its slim line
design does not greatly alter the operating geometry of the attachment. There are seven sizes of MB coupler to suit
pin diameters of 35-40mm, 50-55mm, 60-65mm, 70-75mm, 80-85mm, 90mm and 100-110mm.

Hybrid tandem roller amongst

Bomag launches
Fayat Group member Bomag had a large presence at Bauma and it used
the exhibition to display a significant number of new or recently launched
machines. Of particular interest was the unveiling of the companys new
10 tonne class pivot steer tandem roller with a hybrid drive system
Based on the new fourth generation BW174AP drum steer tandem
roller, the hybrid BW174AP AM version has not only a Deutz diesel engine
but also an electric motor generator, a high capacity battery and
associated electronics. In operation the rollers battery is charged in
generator mode - e.g. when braking (reversing) or during vibration
shutdown - using the difference between the power generated by the
engine and the power take-up. Any unused power is stored.
Power peaks are levelled out when the electric motor takes power from
the battery e.g. when switching on vibration or during acceleration. This
reduces the engine size of the BW174AP AM in its performance class so
there is no need for more complex exhaust gas treatment systems. At the
same time, the engine is said to always operate at optimum performance
and efficiency. This lowers fuel consumption significantly as well as
reducing associated CO2 emissions. Bomag states that initial field tests
have shown a fuel saving of up to 30%.
The new cab on the BW174AP tandem roller has an active armrest
system together with a hand-shaped travel lever.

load of 19.5 tonnes can be lifted. The crane can be equipped
with a 5.0m runner top at the end of its jib that has a capacity of
8.0 tonnes.
The spacious, side-mounted operators cab of the WT2405L
e.tronic has nine windows to maximise visibility. As well as a
comfortable seat and a touch screen display panel, the operator
of this big crane gets air conditioning, a 24V refrigerator and
even a toilet and wash basin with a 200 litre fresh water tank and
a 250 litre waste water tank.
Although dwarfed by its bigger brother, there was also the
new WT175L e.tronic luffing jib tower crane on display. This
crane has a maximum load capacity of 16.0 tonnes and can lift
10.0 tonnes at 13.5m radiuses. It has been designed as a

The Finnish powered access platform maker Dinolift used Bauma to exhibit
its third spider style tracked machine. The new 220XTC with a maximum
working height of 22.1m is now Dinolifts flagship XTC model extending
the range which includes the established 18.5m 185XTC and the 16.5m
165XTC.
Complete with two articulating lower booms and a three-section
telescopic upper boom, the 215kg cage capacity 220XTC can provide a
maximum outreach of 11.0m over obstacles some 5.5m high. Two
simultaneous movements of the boom can be operated proportionally by
use of two joysticks. The machines spacious cage can be rotated through
90.
The 220XTC weighs 3240kg and is powered by an 18.5kW (25hp) Cat
C1.1 diesel engine. With the booms stowed and the outriggers folded in,
the machine is only 1.15m wide and 1.98m high.
There are two travel speed ranges up to 2.4km/h and up to 1.4km/h
and the rubber tracked platform can negotiate a maximum gradient of 43%.
The spider-type outriggers raise the machine up to one metre, giving space
for a small truck to drive under the chassis.
For indoor use, the 220XTC can be equipped with an electric motor
drive and there is also the option of non-marking white tracks. At Bauma,
Dinolift introduced the new option of radio remote control for its XTC
platforms.
