Welcome to the 2015

Making the Future campaign update
In September 2011, the University of Sussex launched its first major
fundraising campaign, aiming to raise 50 million by the summer of
2016. I am delighted to announce that we have reached over 95 per
cent of this goal. This is an amazing achievement and one that would
not have been possible without the support of our donor community.
Philanthropic support is having a tangible and transformative
impact on our campus and students, by helping us achieve a margin
of excellence in all three elements that make up our University our
people, programmes and places.
This year, your donations have supported projects as diverse as
helping students create meaningful links with the community, bringing
the most promising athletes to Sussex and supporting groundbreaking research into bee behaviour.
I would like to extend my most sincere thanks to the many alumni,
friends, corporations, trusts and foundations that have supported our
Making the Future campaign so far.

The Sussex Fund

Your donations in action
The Sussex Fund enables us to provide help and support to students who
find themselves in unexpected financial difficulties, offer scholarships
to attract the brightest minds worldwide, and support other activities to
enrich the student experience on campus. Here are just some of the
projects that our supporters have made possible.

Sprechen sie
Sussex?
Thanks to the Sussex Fund, every Tuesday
in term time the Students Union bar
becomes a hive of multi-lingual chat as
the popular Language Caf gets underway.
Created in collaboration with the
Sussex Centre for Language Studies, the
caf helps Sussex students to brush up
their conversational language skills by
chatting informally with fellow students
from around the world.
The sessions are open to everyone,
and are popular both with international
students and those from the UK up to
80 people come each week with the
most common languages being English,
French and Spanish.
Some of the regulars become
Language Caf Leaders, which means
they help organise the events and gain
further skills in facilitating learning.

My favourite thing about

the Language Caf is
the relaxed, welcoming
atmosphere and amazing
opportunity to practise
my target language

Sussex is calling!
Have you had a call from a Sussex
student recently? If you did, we hope
you enjoyed the conversation. During the
autumn, the highly successful Phonathon
2014 was in full swing, connecting current
students to nearly 2,000 Sussex alumni
around the world. Thanks to our team of
40 student callers, we raised 139,000
in gifts and pledges.
All proceeds will go directly to the
Sussex Fund, enabling us to continue the
fantastic work detailed in this section.
Thank you to everyone who made a gift.

Student rep scheme is given a boost

Student reps are elected every year to
be academic representatives, a point
of contact for students wishing to give
feedback on their course or on members
of staff. It is one of the key schemes
that Sussex uses to improve the student
experience, and the reps play an
invaluable role.
The Sussex Fund has facilitated an
awareness-raising campaign to help
recruit more reps, as well as sponsoring
training to encourage personal
development for the existing reps. With
the Funds help, the initiative can continue
to grow and develop, building an even
stronger bridge between students and
the Schools.

Being a student rep has

allowed me to make
positive changes in a
number of different
areas. For example, I
was able to help develop
an entire module which
had been problematic
this year into a much
better one for next years

UniTV is the
station to watch
The Sussex Fund has recently helped
Sussexs own student TV station, UniTV,
to purchase essential new equipment.
James Quinn, Head of Technology, said:
We have vastly improved our live set-up
rig we will be able to stream in a much
higher quality with the more powerful
computers and improved campus
internet. Our live rig is now portable
which means we can broadcast outside
of the studio. The new equipment also
makes it much easier to teach the
new members how to use this complex
technology and I hope this will get
freshers as passionate about student
media as we are.

News in brief
Academic societies are a key tool in
motivating students to think more
broadly about their discipline, giving
them experiences and insights they
will be able to use in their studies. The
Sussex Fund has been instrumental
in providing funding to support the
development of academic societies in
recent years, for activities as diverse as
a poetry workshop, a trip to Bletchley
Park and a guest lecture series.
The number of staff and students
cycling on to campus every day is
on the rise. RE:CYCLE is an innovative
scheme run by students that rescues
and repairs abandoned bikes, and
rents them out to other students for
a nominal fee. The Sussex Fund has
helped several students to undertake
bike mechanic training, ensuring the
sustainability of the scheme.

Students in the community

The Students Union, with support from
the Sussex Fund, has created the
Community Rep Scheme to help
strengthen the relationship between
Sussex students and other residents.
The Union recently ran a Pop-Up event
in Brighton, taking over Jubilee Square
to showcase the positive contribution

students and the Union make to the city

and surrounding areas.
Indi Hicks, who is currently running
the scheme, said: The dedication of
the Community Reps has helped to
create meaningful links with the wider
community, which to this day are helping
to provide new opportunities to students.

The Family Room is a safe space

on campus for student parents
and their children to meet, play
and socialise. It has recently been
renovated, and support from the Sussex
Fund has purchased toys and other
equipment, giving a much-needed
boost to the facilities.

These student athletes

are competing at the
highest level nationally
and internationally and
would struggle to do so
without the support of
the Sussex Fund and
Sussexsport. The scheme
is really starting to gain
momentum. We have had
some great individual
results at major events
and we are starting to
attract some top athletes
Luke Terrill
Sports Development Officer at Sussexsport

Meet the sporting stars of tomorrow

This years sports bursaries, which
have been supported by the Sussex
Fund, have been awarded to some
exceptionally promising athletes.
Mathematics student Nicolla Weekes,
who has been a member of the England
rounders squad from U13 level, received
a Performance Athlete Award. Nicolla
is now an England senior player who
regularly competes at a national and
international level.
Badminton player and International
Relations student Brynhild Carlsson,

from the Faroe Islands, also received a

Performance Athlete Award. She will be
representing her country in 2015 at the
Iceland International and in the qualifiers
for the European Championships.
Twenty-three other Sussex students
have also had their athletic achievements
recognised by the University, in sports as
diverse as running, three-day eventing,
hockey, ultimate frisbee, american
football, sailing, karate, volleyball, long
jump, netball, show jumping, badminton
and rugby union.

Q&A
Jacqui Harper MBE (ENGAM 1981) talks about her
time at Sussex and what motivated her to support the University
Q: Why did you decide to come to
Sussex to study?
A: I was drawn to the modern and vibrant
campus when I attended the interview at
Sussex. There was nowhere else like it
and I just knew I would feel at home.
Q: What do you remember most from
your time at University?
A: FINALS. At the age of 21 it was the
biggest challenge I had ever faced. My
first two years of study were relatively low
level in terms of effort. But when finals
came around I really applied myself and
I was delighted to receive a 2:1. More
importantly, I learned that I could meet

Biography:
Formerly a news reader and journalist for the
BBC, GMTV and Sky News, Jacqui is now an
executive coach and leadership consultant
and is Managing Director of Crystal Business
Training. Recently she started work as lecturer
and consultant at INSEAD Business School.
In 2000 Jacqui was awarded an MBE for
voluntary work and in July 2014 she formally
graduated from Sussex, nearly thirty years
after completing her degree.

tough challenges. This is something that

greatly benefited me when I started my
media career.
Q: How did your experience as a Sussex
student influence your career?
A: Sussex provided my early experiences
in the media. As part of my course, I
spent a year abroad at the University
of California, Davis, where I wrote for
the university newspaper. I was so
impressed with the professionalism of
their newsletter and the fact they had
a real newsroom. When I returned to
Sussex I joined MediaSoc. I remember
playing around with very clunky cameras
in a simple TV studio. We made some
very basic programmes but I loved that
environment.
Q: What inspired you to give to Sussex?
A: Eleanor Roosevelt said: The future
belongs to those who believe in the beauty
of their dreams. As a former Sussex
student I would add the future belongs to
those who also act on the beauty of their
dreams. I was reminded of this when I
watched Sussex students protesting on
campus three years ago, in reaction to
the increased tuition fees. I was pleased
to see the Sussex spirit is still alive. It was
powerful to see people acting on their
beliefs and it made me think about what
I could do to make a change.
Q: Why does this cause matter to you?
A: For me, it is a social justice issue.
I believe that top education should be
available to people from all backgrounds
and especially to those with modest family
incomes. In 1981 I was one of those

people but I was fortunate that I was able

to attend Sussex because I had financial
help in the form of a full grant from my
local authority. I have always known the
value of my Sussex education and without
the support I received I am sure my life
would have been very different.

The Harper Award did

more than just equip me
financially. It gave me
a burst of confidence...
My time at Sussex was a
wonderful and meaningful
journey, bringing new
surprises, new challenges
and new opportunities
Ghislaino Kamdo
Ghislaino Kamdo was the first recipient of the
Harper Award. He graduated with a first class
honours degree in Philosophy in July 2014

Q: What has supporting Sussex students

meant to you?
A: First the unexpected benefit: my return
to Sussex reminded me how much I
enjoyed being part of a lively, academic
campus. When I was asked, I jumped at
the opportunity to teach communication
and leadership development courses at a
business school.
Being a donor has been immensely
satisfying, and Ive particularly enjoyed
connecting with a current student. It is
so important to help the University help
its students.

New research
creates a buzz
Two researchers have recently completed
their doctorates in the Laboratory of
Apiculture and Social Insects (LASI), and
have made important new discoveries in
the world of honey bees.
Gianluigi Bigios thesis proved that
hygienic behaviour is a natural (but not
common) behaviour in which worker
bees remove dead or diseased brood
from the hive. As a result, it is a defence
mechanism against brood diseases and
parasites such as the Varroa mite.
Beginning in April 2010, Gianluigis
doctorate took four years and was
supported by a donation from the British

Beekeepers Association. He has now

returned to his native Italy but he is still
working with honey bees and hygienic
behaviour with the Piedmont Honey
Producers Association.
Mihail Garbuzovs thesis comprised
10 research projects, and his work
was supported by a donation from The
Body Shop Foundation. One of these
projects looked at quantifying variation in
attractiveness of garden plant varieties to
bees and other flower-visiting insects.
His research informed a list of
ornamental garden flowers that are
attractive to both bees and humans, and
clearly shows that there is great scope
for making gardens and parks in Britain
more bee- and insect-friendly. Mihail is
continuing at Sussex as a post-doctoral
researcher at LASI.

Scholarships make Sussex

better and brighter
Scholarships have always been an
integral part of Sussex, attracting the
most gifted students and supporting
those who would otherwise be unable
to benefit from a university education.
In 201415, we are happy to announce
that we have been able to award more
scholarships than ever before: 287 in
total, awarded to students from around
the world and at every degree level. The
scholars were welcomed at a special
reception in September, where the ViceChancellor congratulated them on their
achievements.
Many of the scholarships have been
made possible by generous philanthropic
donations, both from individuals and from
organisations.

Thanks to the generosity of our North

American alumni and the Friends of
the University of Sussex, the American
Friends Scholarship is awarded annually
on the basis of academic merit. It is
offered to an American student hoping
to study at Masters level in any subject.
This years recipient is Sarah Quain, who
is studying for an MA in Modern and
Contemporary Literature, Culture and
Thought. Sarah said: The scholarship
will allow me to experience the rich
resources available at the University of
Sussex, nearby Modernist pilgrimage
sites, and in the UK at large. Without
this support, I could not have travelled
to Sussex for what is already becoming a
truly immersive experience in Modernist
literature, art and scholarship.

Eminent historian Lord Asa Briggs, one

of Sussexs founding fathers and former
Vice-Chancellor, has been honoured with
a new scholarship in his name. The Asa
Briggs PhD scholarship in History has
been made possible by the support of
Sussex alumni, staff, former staff and
friends who contributed towards the
Asa Briggs Fund, set up to celebrate his
90th birthday.
The first recipient of the scholarship
is Zoe Strimpel. She will be examining
metropolitan courtship culture since
1970, focusing on how the evolution of
technology and the rise and aftermath
of Second-Wave feminism have shaped
gender dynamics in the dating sphere.

New Attenborough
portrait is completed
Sadly, in August 2014, we lost our former
Chancellor, Lord Richard Attenborough
one of Sussexs most ardent and
committed supporters. However, we hope
the new Attenborough Centre for the
Creative Arts, named in his honour, will be
a fitting memorial to him when it opens
later this year.
As part of the Centres refurbishment
work, Sussex recently commissioned
a portrait of Lord Attenborough by the
Brighton-based artist Mike Edwards,
which will hang in the foyer. The painting is
made up of the names of 200 individuals
and organisations many of Lord
Attenboroughs former colleagues, friends
and admirers who have made donations
towards the refurbishment and reopening
of the Attenborough Centre.

Bringing podo
treatment to
Cameroon
Funds raised as part of the Brighton and
Sussex Medical School (BSMS) ten-year
anniversary celebrations have been put
towards the creation of a communitybased podoconiosis (podo) prevention
and treatment centre in North-West
Cameroon.
This part of Cameroon is highly affected
by podo and, although BSMS has begun
some research there, currently little
treatment is being offered to patients.
The first step in setting up this centre
will be an exchange training visit with
podo experts from Ethiopia, training 25
nurses and NGO leaders in podo care
and treatment. This training will help to
work out how best to bring government
and non-government partners together
to start local delivery of treatment. BSMS
is already one of the key global players in
podo research.

Sussex is doing to help, in Falmer magazine.

about university life

Be part of the legacy

One simple act of remembering Sussex in
your will could have great impact in years
to come, making a significant difference
to the lives of future Sussex students.
Last March, we held an inaugural Legacy
Tea to thank the growing number of
alumni and friends who have expressed
an interest in supporting Sussex in this
forward-thinking way. Those who attended
the event heard presentations from two
leading academics: Dr Hilary Kalmbach,
lecturer in Middle East History, and
Professor Robert Livingstone, Professor
of Organisational Behaviour and Human
Resource Management. Guests also had
the chance to speak to current students.
Legacy gifts play a significant part in
securing the financial independence of

Sussex and ensuring we are able to plan

for our long-term success. By investing
in the future of the University, you will be
helping to ensure that we continue to
play our vital role. You will make a
lasting and significant difference to the
staff and students of the future for many
years to come.

I fell in love with Sussex 50 years

ago, when I arrived as a fresh-faced
undergraduate in October 1964, and Ive
been involved with the University ever
since, taking further degrees and serving
for a while as a member of Court. Sussex
taught me to think outside the box, to
be confident in my own abilities and to
be aware of the needs of others, and
enabled me to pursue a successful and,
I hope, useful career. Sussex was also
where I met my wife, Sally, whose life
is commemorated on one of the pavers
outside the Asa Briggs lecture theatre.
To celebrate my association with Sussex,
to record my gratitude and to support
future generations of Sussex students,
Ive provided for a legacy to the University
in my will. If you feel as I do, you may
wish to consider doing the same.
John Godfrey (SOC 1964)
