Subject Area: Science (in collaboration with English Department)

Grade Level: 3
Topic: Ecosystem
Learning Outcomes:
In this performance task, the following learning outcomes should be achieved:

To learn that living things depend on their environment for food, air, and water to survive

To identify the basic needs of humans, plants and animals such as air, food, water and
shelter

To explain how living things depend on the environment to meet their basic needs

To recognize that there is a need to protect and conserve the environment

Task Description:
In the next two weeks you will be environmentalists! You will be teamed up into a group of five
and you will then observe a community or neighborhood of your choice and list down the
different sources of food, water, and shelter in that community. After which, you need to identify
any environmental problems that are present in the area. Take note of the different elements in
the ecosystem affected by these environmental issues and describe how these issues affect other
living organisms. Think of possible solutions to the problems and present it in class.
Direct Instruction
1. In the community or neighborhood you are to observe, walk around, and explore the area.
Take note of the different sources of food, water, and shelter and which organisms benefit
from it.
2. Look for any environmental problems that you think would affect the basic needs of
humans, plants, and animals.

3. Take pictures for evidence. Remember, as young scientists we only want to observe so
take nothing but pictures and leave nothing but footprints behind.
4. In the classroom, you will present your groups observation together with the pictures and
the possible solutions that would help lessen or eliminate the environmental issues you
identified in the area.
5. Your classmates will have to examine your groups suggested solutions and give their
own suggestions until you all agree on the best possible solutions for the environmental
issues you identified.
6. In collaboration with your English teacher, and as project in English, you will then write
a persuasive letter to the barangay captain of your chosen community informing him/her
your groups observations. Here you will list down all the possible solutions the class has
agreed upon to help solve the environmental issues in the community. You must convince
the Barangay leaders to follow your advice by citing the importance of a healthy
ecosystem in the community.
