BLOOD COLLECTION PROCEDURE

THROUGH VENIPUNCTURE METHOD
Preparation of the Puncture Site
The area around the puncture site should be cleansed thoroughly with 70% alcohol
and sterile gauze or cotton. The site may then be dried using dry sterile gauze or cotton,
or may be air dried. Once the site is cleansed, it should not be touched again except when
to enter the vein with the needle.
Performing the Puncture
When the puncture has been cleansed, the tourniquet should be reapplied to the arm;
it should not touch the cleansed area. The syringe should be held in one hand at a 15-30
degrees angle to the arm. The bevel should be up, and the needle should be pointed in the
same direction as the vein. Penetrating the vein the proper angle will prevent penetration
of both blood vessels. (The thumb may be placed about one inch below the point of entry,
and the skin pressured and pulled toward the venipuncturist, to anchor the vein and lessen
the pull of the needle on the skin.) The skin and vein should be entered in one smooth
motion until the needle is in the lumen of the vein. The syringe and the needle should
then be held motionless while the plunger is gently pulled back with the other hand to
draw blood into the syringe. The needle should be observed while the syringe is being
filled to be sure that it is not pulled out of the vein. When the proper amount of blood has
been obtained, the tourniquet should be released. The needle can be withdrawn from the
vein while gauze is placed over the puncture site. Used needles should not be recapped
but should be carefully discarded using a needle disposal container. The blood should
then be transferred to appropriate blood collection tube using only light pressure on the
plunger.
Care of Puncture Site
The patient should be instructed to press the gauze on the puncture site for two to
five minutes with the arm extended to ensure that bleeding stops and that a swelling of
tissue or a hematoma does not form. The venipuncturist should check the arm to see that
it has stopped bleeding before leaving the patient and should apply a bandage if
necessary.

STATEMENT OF CONSENT
I, ______________________________ of legal age and in the exercise of my own
freewill, do hereby submit to blood collection procedure through venipuncture method.
I submit myself to this interest of science and in order to gain a practical insight on
the procedure. I know that this is an important part of my training as a student of Medical
Technology in this university.
I have studied this procedure in class with a qualified instructor. I further declare that
I have thorough theoretical knowledge of this procedure, which is described in Annex A
of this statement.
I am also aware that adequate measures are being adopted in order to prevent
possible complication from taking place. In this light, I am assuming the risk of any
complication, which having taken proper measures, reasonable diligence cannot foresee. I
