Powdered haritaki, mixed with jaggery, works well in gout.

Harad powder, when mixed with honey and ghee, is an effective remedy for
anemia.
Haritaki is combined with sunthi powder and given with hot water to lighten
asthma and hiccups.
Its decoction, when taken along with honey, is of great help in hepatitis and
obesity.

The herb improves memory and is salutary in dysuria and urinary stones.
Haritaki helps in improving appetite and helps in digestion.
It is a good nervine and helps in nervous weakness and nervous irritability and
promotes the receiving power of the five senses.
Since it is anti-inflammatory and astringent, it is helpful in urethral discharges
like spermatorrhea and vaginal discharges like leucorrhea.

Caution
Haritaki should be sparingly used by lean individuals and pregnant women.
It should be avoided in severe debility, mental depression, while fasting and vitiated
pitta conditions.
Chewing the Haritaki fruit causes increase in digestion power.
If it is made into a paste and eaten, it clears and cleanses bowels.
If it is steamed or boiled, it becomes absorbant, useful in malabsorption
syndrome.
If it is fried and used, it is useful in Tridosha imbalance conditions.
If Hareetaki is taken after food, it helps to eliminate all the toxic effects due to
food poisoning.
If it is taken along with salt, it balances Kapha.
If taken with sugar, it balances Pitta and if taken with ghee, it balances Vata
disorders.
Chiefly it is used as a laxative which is safe and effective at the same time.
For an average person, big harad, powdered and given in dose of 2-3 teaspoonfuls at
bedtime, will serve the purpose.
Harad contains all the six tastes except lavana (saltish). It is hot in action, reduces the
tridoshas, and the post digestive action is beneficial. It is good for the mental faculty
and it has rejuvenating properties. It can be given to patients in asthma, cough, urinary
disorders, piles and in cases of swelling, blood impurities, heart disorder and other
ailments.
It keeps the bowels in good condition, removes accumulation of faeces, maintains normal
appetite, improves digestion, increases red corpuscles and enriches the blood. It is a safe
and reliable remedy which can be taken daily without any side reaction or habit forming
effect.

Grandma rubs the big harad on a special stone and gives the product to the small infant.
It removes constipation and keeps the infant fit. It also prevents the formation of kapha
in small children.
If you are in search of a safe and effective drug which is a general laxative, and which is
at the same time a tonic with soothing and good effects on health, harad is the answer. It
can be given to all and in all seasons. Only it should not be given in big doses to weak
persons.

Reduces constipation: The fruit of harad contains mild laxative properties which help in
reducing constipation. Taking 2-3 fruit pieces with rock salt can reduce constipation,
according to Ayurveda.
Controls diarrhoea and dysentery: Haritaki fruit is also helpful in reducing dysentery
and diarrhoea. The pulp of unripe fruit can be taken along with honey, cloves and cinnamon
to reduce diarrhoea and dysentery.
Cures haemorrhoids or piles: According to Ayurveda, the fresh fruit fried in castor oil
and powdered, and taken every night is believed to heal the piles masses, and also helps in
free bowel movement.
Antibacterial properties: Harad or chebulic myroblan possesses antibacterial properties
too. The extracts from harad were very effective in controlling bacterial growth in
experiments. Bacteria such as Pseudomonas aeruginosa, P. fluorescens, B. bronchiseptica, S.
aureus, S. epidermidis, B. cereus and B. pumilis were controlled effectively. Fungi such as
Alternaria brassicicola, A. alternata, Helminthosporium tetramera , Aspergillus flavus and
A.niger were also controlled by harad extracts.
Anti-inflammatory properties: The chemicals present in harad also possess antioxidant properties. These anti-oxidant properties reduce lipid peroxidation and promote anti
inflammatory mediator tumour necrosis factor A. The anti-oxidant properties of harad are
particularly useful against gouty arthritis.
Good for heart: The extracts from harad slowed down the heart rate to normal levels in
case of medication induced elevated heart beat (tachycardia). It also reduces the effect of
myocardial necrosis.
Can protect against radiation: Studies at the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre had given
positive results in survival of rats exposed to gamma radiation. The anti-oxidants present in
harad reduced the amount of free radicals and DNA damage caused by exposure.
Wound healing properties: Extracts of Chebulic myroblan fruit possess wound healing
properties. The extracts when applied locally, quickened wound healing as compared to those
wounds which were not treated.
