German Eating Habits

The people in Germany usually have quick breakfast before they go to work. The time for
the breakfast depends on the beginning of the work and is mostly between 6 am and 8
am. For breakfast germans normally eat bread or rolls with marmalade, a sweet cream or
curd. Cheese and especially meat but not so common. Quite popular are also cereals with
milk. Beside the food the germans drink mostly coffee.

The classic German breakfast consists of a variety of breads and rolls, honey, jam, and
coffee or tea. For those who prefer a savoury start to the day cheese and cold meats are
also served. For a more lavish breakfast you may also be offered a boiled egg, yoghurt

normally eat bread or rolls with cheese and meat which they prepared at home. The
other people get their lunch from a diner or a canteen and for them it is the main meal of
the day.
Typical meals from diners are currywurst with french fries, schnitzel with french fries,
pizza or kebab. A typical lunch in the canteen is a plate which consists of a piece of meat
or fish, some vegetables and one of the thousands opportunities you can create with
potatoes. Another typical sub-dish is rice. Also really popular for lunch is pasta. For

about 3 pm with coffee and cookies. But in contrary to the other
meals this break is not so common.

very similar to the English tradition of "Teatime". It's a
custom that brings families together to enjoy a little
"Gemtlichkeit" (a word that means coziness). Families and friends gather
together in the mid to late afternoon to drink coffee and enjoy a slice of cake or
two, often homemade. Typical cakes you might find at such a gathering include

mustards and pickles (gherkins are very popular). Often it is accompanied by a salad and/or a
