QUESTION 1
The following Figure shows a simplified rotor and stator for a DC motor. The mean path length
of the stator is 50 cm, and its cross sectional area is 12 cm2. The mean path length of the rotor is
5 cm, and its cross sectional area may be assumed to be 12 cm2. Each air gap between the rotor
and the stator is 0.05 cm wide, and the cross sectional area of each air gap is 14 cm2. The iron of
the core has a relative permeability of 2000, and there are 200 turns of wire on the core. If the
current in the wire is adjusted to be 1 A, determine the resulting flux density in the air gap.

QUESTION 2
The Figure below shows a simple single phase AC power system with three loads. The
impedance of these loads are:
Z1 = 530

Z2 = 545

Z3 = 5-90

Answer the following questions about this power system. The V is given as 1200 V
(a)

Assume that the switch shown in the Figure is open, and calculate the current I, the
power factor, and the real, reactive and apparent power being supplied by the source.

(b)

Assume that the switch shown in the Figure is closed, and calculate the current I, the
power factor, and the real, reactive and apparent power being supplied by the source.
