Content: - vocabulary related to policy and human rights; travelling and London landmarks;
- the comparison of adverbs
Time: 50 minutes
Aims: - to develop students receptive skills;
- to build on students cultural knowledge
Lesson objectives:
ACTIVITY 1 - to warm up the students from the start;
- to review and reinforce vocabulary related to policy and human rights;
- to check the previous lesson knowledge
ACTIVITY 2 - to create expectation and arouse students interest in the topic;
- to give cultural information;
- to listen to extract specific information
ACTIVITY 3 -to predict the content of the reading text;
- to identify the new words in context;
- to increase students interest in the reading text
ACTIVITY 4 - to read for general understanding;
- to identify the main idea of a paragraph
ACTIVITY 5 - to verify and expand the knowledge acquired in the reading.
- to co-operate in order to succeed in doing the task
ACTIVITY 6 - to practice comparison using adverbs;

PROCEDURE

ACTIVITY 1 WARMER, CHECKING THE PREVIOUS LESSON KNOWLEDGE


Aims: - to warm up the students from the start;
- to review and reinforce vocabulary related to policy and human rights;
- to check the previous lesson knowledge
Estimated time: 10 min
Methods and techniques: conversation, explanation, translation
The students are asked about the rights and obligations they have as citizens; what sort of rights (civil,
individual); people rights throughout the history.
The students are presented the pictures of Abraham Lincoln and Martin Luther King to find what they
have in common. The teacher then, asks questions related to the reading text students have studied and elicits
Romanian equivalents for the vocabulary words: Who was Martin Luther King? What is the name of his
famous speech? When did Martin Luther King deliver his I have a dream speech? What is the
Emancipation Proclamation? (decree) When was it signed? What did it proclaim? According to the speech,
to whom did the Emancipation Proclamation give hope? What is it compared with? (beacon, daybreak).
Were Afro-Americans free? How is it their life described? (seared in the flames of withering injustice;
crippled in the manacles of segregation; languishing in the corners of American society) What has new
militancy done to the Negro community?(engulfed and led to distrust of white people)
ACTIVITY 2 LEAD IN
Aims: - to create expectation and arouse students interest in the topic;
- to give cultural information;
- to listen to extract specific information
Estimated time: 10 min
Methods and techniques: conversation, explanation, top-down strategy
The teacher tells the students they are going to learn about famous historic attractions in London and
writes the title on the board. The students then say what places, buildings, and landmarks they know in
London and they are written on the board. When the students give sufficient material they are given a list of
ten attractions in London, and are told they are going to watch a tourist guide presentation Top ten attractions
in London , in order to identify what landmarks are not mentioned in this presentation. The students are
working in pairs. The video then is played again and the students check their answers.
ACTIVITY 3 PRE-READING
Aims: -to predict the content of the reading text;
- to identify the new words in context;
- to increase students interest in the reading text
Estimated time: 5 min
Methods and techniques: conversation, explanation, translation
The students watch a power point presentation and they have to identify, in pairs or groups, the meaning
of the underlined words or expressions. They write down the words.

ACTIVITY 4 WHILE-READING
Aims: - to read for general understanding;
- to identify the main idea of a paragraph
Estimated time: 5 min
Methods and techniques: skimming, answering questions
The students, in pairs or groups, read the three texts from their textbook in order to identify which texts
refer to or mention the Royal Family, the name of William I, and the existence of special guards. Students
then, check their answers.
ACTIVITY 5 POST-READING
Aim: - to verify and expand the knowledge acquired in the reading.
- to co-operate in order to succeed in doing the task
Estimated time: 5 min
Methods and techniques: discussion, answering questions
The students in groups have to choose one of the three landmarks they would like to visit, and give details
and facts about it.
ACTIVITY 6 GRAMMAR REVIEW
Aims: - to practice comparison using adverbs;
- to study and identify by themselves the forms, patters and situations expressed
Estimated time: 10 min
Methods and techniques: explanation, deductive approach, exemplification, translation
The students watch a short presentation of the comparison of adverbs to review the theoretical part. The
teacher asks the students to explain and give examples. The students then get worksheets to complete the
right form of the given adverb in the required situations. When the task is done, the students check their
answers. The teacher may correct them if necessary and remind the rules.
ACTIVITY 7 EVALUATION AND HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT
Aims: - to evaluate students activity;
- to assigned students homework
Estimated time: 5 min
Methods: conversation, explanation
The teacher evaluates the students activity during the class.
The students are assigned to write the answers of the questions referring to the reading text (page 96)
