sounds better

4/10/2015 12:40 PM

Everything is integrated tightly with digital.

4/10/2015 5:00 AM

Convenient with everything in the box

4/9/2015 11:52 PM

It's just what I have available. I make music digitally, but I try to make imperfections so that it sounds more
natural. Stuff, like subtle, slow vibrato on synths so that they slightly detune, or a slight pitch envelope at the start
of a note.

4/9/2015 10:34 PM

analog sounds more organic but digital is easier and can make weirder & cooler stuff

4/9/2015 10:27 PM

Its cheaper

4/9/2015 8:26 PM

Cause I'm fucking broke and I have no room to put all that shit

4/9/2015 7:54 PM

Digital because it's all I have. I'd love to try analog.

4/9/2015 7:24 PM

I like to play what I'm making, mostly guitar though.

4/9/2015 4:44 PM

10

I don't have an analog synth.... yet.

4/9/2015 4:16 PM

11

Less of a hassle, portable

4/9/2015 1:09 PM

12

I like to create complex sound design and digital is good for it

4/9/2015 10:10 AM

13

It's easier and cheaper

4/9/2015 10:10 AM

14

I hate using a mouse to make music.

4/9/2015 9:44 AM

15

It's more natural

4/9/2015 5:50 AM

16

Purely convenience.

4/9/2015 4:40 AM

17

I prefer both because I broaden my horizons to see what works the best for the final product.

4/9/2015 3:58 AM

18

Due to the popularity of the software it is easier to get tutorials on it .

4/9/2015 3:20 AM

19

Analog for acoustic instruments (vocals, guitar, etc), digital for everything else. Digital is way more flexible and
can do more. I believe sound quality can be made to sound more 'analog' or 'warm' by cleverly using saturation
throughout the mixing process.

4/9/2015 3:01 AM

20

I like all, digital is far easier to get quality sounds

4/9/2015 1:54 AM

21

I like being able to have all of my stuff on a computer considering I'm in a cramped dorm room!

4/9/2015 12:52 AM

22

In this day and age, the only advantage held by physical electronic music equipment (not including recording
equipment, obviously) over software is the satisfaction that comes from working with tangible tools rather than
staring at a screen - a genuine concern, but not one that is justified by the expense and inconvenience unless you
have loads of cash to burn. And on the subject of that supposedly inimitable analog sound - a) sure, physical
synths might sound somewhat different from virtual ones, but "different" is not necessarily better sounding, and b)
if it is the analog sound you are after, there are tons of competent "virtual analog" soft synths and effects
available.

4/9/2015 12:52 AM

23

i don't have any analog equipment (does a 25-key midi keyboard count as analog?), so digital is my only
resource.

4/9/2015 12:41 AM

24

Digital it makes life easy Analog feels right

4/9/2015 12:31 AM

25

Accessibility

4/8/2015 11:37 PM

26

I prefer hybrid between the two because there are simply some instruments that can't be sampled. I'm also fairly
limited in my sequencing knowledge and am more comfortable playing parts rather than programming them.

27

Analog is to expensive

4/8/2015 10:31 PM

28

I've never even considered the possibility of creating analog.

4/8/2015 10:28 PM

29

I have not actually used any analog gear, but I feel as though it would feel more satisfying to use a physical
device rather than pointing and clicking with a mouse.

4/8/2015 10:17 PM

30

Analog makes it so the technological difficulties are kept to a minimum and it's is easier to replicate from the idea
in my head.

4/8/2015 10:16 PM

31

Digital is more organized.

4/8/2015 9:29 PM

32

Its the future

4/8/2015 9:21 PM

33

I prefer the sound of analog, however finding good analog equipment is hard to do and expensive. I go with digital
because it allows me to be portable and the cost isn't prohibitive

4/8/2015 8:58 PM

34

I haven't had much experience with analog gear

4/8/2015 8:14 PM

35

I prefer digital synths because they're generally not as limited as analog synths in terms of polyphony, unison,
etc.

4/8/2015 7:24 PM

36

Because it's quick, because copy paste, everything locked to perfect tempo, midi editing, lots of synth stuff,
mobile, non-desructiv editing, lots of tracks, cheap

4/8/2015 7:10 PM

37

You can take it with you anywhere and it's really all you need if you know what you're doing

4/8/2015 7:06 PM

38

No moolah baby

4/8/2015 6:57 PM

39

Sounds nicer

4/8/2015 6:26 PM

40

Flexibility

4/8/2015 6:13 PM

41

suits genre, easy to work with

4/8/2015 6:13 PM

42

When producing digitally you can do it pretty much anywhere. Just take your laptop with you and you're good to
go.

4/8/2015 6:00 PM

43

I like both for a good and varied way to work and create. Its also fun

4/8/2015 5:57 PM

44

Easier.

4/8/2015 5:57 PM

45

I use both, if you limit yourself to just one then you're just limiting your abilities. It may be more creative to use
just one, but on the whole you are only limiting yourself.

4/8/2015 5:46 PM

46

Not had access to analog yet

4/8/2015 5:44 PM

47

Both

4/8/2015 5:40 PM

48

easier

4/8/2015 5:16 PM

49

Hard to recreate digitally

4/8/2015 5:14 PM

50

Digital. Analog equipment is expensive

4/8/2015 4:41 PM

51

Each has something the other does not.

4/8/2015 4:24 PM

52

I love the little flaws and inaccuracies that make analog music sound meaningful and human. However, digital
music is a lot of fun because I haven't got any hardware synths and I love sound design and stuff. When I say
analog I mean recording my drums or keyboard.

4/8/2015 4:21 PM

53

Not sure because I've never used analog gear.

4/8/2015 4:20 PM

54

Because I'm used to digital and I don't have access to analog equipment

4/8/2015 4:03 PM

55

Faster ideas with analog

4/8/2015 4:02 PM

56

I prefer music...

4/8/2015 3:43 PM

57

much greater flexibility with digital, you can manipulate the entire audible spectrum and create sounds that you
might never have heard before. The realms of discovery are endless!

Because quality analog stuff is waaaay more expensive than digital.

4/8/2015 2:54 PM

60

no analog equipment. old school.

4/8/2015 2:40 PM

61

I use digital but I feel as analogs body of sound is more pure than digital. But I do use digital.

4/8/2015 2:16 PM

62

Digital is cheaper and easier

4/8/2015 1:44 PM

63

Well I didn't have an opportunity to try analog...

4/8/2015 1:34 PM

64

I like the sounds i can get out of my analog synths, but Digital for ease of use

4/8/2015 12:51 PM

65

I produce everything in a DAW with soft-synths but I also use a lot of analogue synths. When it comes to mixing
and mastering, I mainly use analogue compressors and EQ.

4/8/2015 12:45 PM

66

Can't afford analog. But I would like to try/have it

4/8/2015 12:23 PM

67

Both are good

4/8/2015 12:12 PM

68

I don't prefer either both analog and digital tools offer their own advantages and I like to find synergistic uses for
these.

4/8/2015 12:04 PM

69

Ease of use. Makes projects very portable.

4/8/2015 11:44 AM

70

I prefer digital because of it's versatility and it enables me to produce in my daily travelling from home to school
which gives me 3 hours in a day to produce music

4/8/2015 11:42 AM

71

With analog you can add soul to what you're playing. With digital you can surpass your natural skill,

4/8/2015 11:26 AM

72

I like the convenience, creative possibilities and sound of digital production.

4/8/2015 10:28 AM

73

digital is easier.

4/8/2015 10:21 AM

74

Everything is easier thanks to presets. And piano roll.

4/8/2015 10:13 AM

75

With analog i can have more control over the sounds i make nad with digital i only use a finger to change the
sound.

4/8/2015 10:10 AM

76

can't afford analog

4/8/2015 10:01 AM

77

I like my analog synths

4/8/2015 9:47 AM

78

Analog - Sound better most of the times and feels more organic. Digital - Lot easier to deal with, fast and efficient

4/8/2015 9:40 AM

79

I like to sample using a h2n, so its not quite analog but it makes awesome sounds

4/8/2015 9:37 AM

80

Clear sound

4/8/2015 9:37 AM

81

Hard question. I use guitar, fl studio and a lot of vsts.

4/8/2015 9:36 AM

82

Analog need to much space.

4/8/2015 9:34 AM

83

Because I find it more comfortable.

4/8/2015 9:34 AM

84

Each has it's own advantages

4/8/2015 9:30 AM

85

Honestly, I have no idea what either is.

4/8/2015 9:29 AM

86

because its easier as a hobyist

4/8/2015 9:28 AM

87

Analog for its warmth, organic properties and unrivaled tangibility.

4/8/2015 9:26 AM

88

It's easier.

4/8/2015 9:25 AM

89

4/8/2015 9:21 AM

Money and lack of equipment / space

4/8/2015 8:25 AM

97

sound quality

4/8/2015 8:16 AM

98

Digital is much easier to manipulate and it's all contained in the box.

4/8/2015 8:16 AM

99

Both

4/8/2015 8:09 AM

100

Owning 2-3 synthesizers would take a significant amount of room space away from me but the same number of
synthesizers takes a negligible amount of hard drive space.

4/8/2015 7:54 AM

101

They both have their benefits and drawbacks, and they both serve their purposes.

4/8/2015 7:54 AM

102

Don't have enough money for analog. Also too young to get the nostalgia many people have with it.

4/8/2015 7:44 AM

103

I'm pretty much limited to creating music digitally, so it's honestly all I can actually work with.

4/8/2015 7:38 AM

104

more control using digital

4/8/2015 7:29 AM

105

Producing my first two albums with Analog equipment allowed a very natural and true sound. I've switched over
to digital for a greater array of options and efficiency.

4/8/2015 7:27 AM

106

They both have pros and cons.

4/8/2015 7:23 AM

107

Its the only thing i have so far

4/8/2015 7:13 AM

108

It's not that I prefer digital, but it is more easily accessible in a bedroom studio than analogue is. However if I had
access to analogue I'm sure I'd be a hybrid.

4/8/2015 7:05 AM

109

because of the convenience if in the box

4/8/2015 7:02 AM

110

Analog is fat and inaccurate. Digital is cold and fiercely precise. It really benefits to use both.

4/8/2015 7:01 AM

111

They have unique characteristics

4/8/2015 6:55 AM

112

You can do things that arent possible in real world applications. No trial and error either, it will always be exactly
the same.

4/8/2015 6:52 AM

113

Analog has an immediacy that feels very freeing, and there's less chance of something crashing/glitching/etc.
Digital is something you can do at 3 A.M. in an apartment with headphones, and rock out without getting evicted.
And in terms of sound, the limit is more imagination than expense. There are a lot of great free synths and
effects.

4/8/2015 6:51 AM

114

I don't own analog

4/8/2015 6:48 AM

115

I don't have a preference. There are advantages to each.

4/8/2015 6:46 AM

116

I preffer both because you can get so many things with them combined.

4/8/2015 6:35 AM

117

digital because it offers more freedom and potential

4/8/2015 6:25 AM

118

Digital is just simpler

4/8/2015 6:23 AM

119

Cleaner and Easier

4/8/2015 6:18 AM

120

"Warmth."

4/8/2015 6:14 AM

121

Analog is more fun to work with. With digital, you're using a mouse. I use a mouse all day to begin with. Using
knobs, dials, wheels and whatnot that are intrinsic with analog synths are more fun. I have nothing against digital
synths though, and personally almost all of my synths are digital because software is cheaper than hardware.

4/8/2015 6:11 AM

122

Digital is easier/cheaper and there are plugins for virtually everything you want. Only really well trained people
will be able to hear difference.

4/8/2015 6:04 AM

123

They both offer benefits and allow for creativity

4/8/2015 5:57 AM

124

For creative workflow digital presets and tools make capturing ideas quick and easy. For detail work its analog as
often as possible.

4/8/2015 5:54 AM

125

Digital is usually easier when I know what I want to make, while the tactile feedback from analog is better for
messing around/ inspiration

i've tried some hardware like analog/digital synthesizers and effects processors. The only useful hardware to me
now though is midi controllers. The ability to edit parameters and write modulation/automation is important to me
so i like to keep everything in the box

4/8/2015 5:50 AM

127

Workflow. Digital recreation of analog sound is becoming a reality now.

4/8/2015 5:47 AM

128

Digital allows flexibility, but there's a discipline to analogue that just works better in some situations, and creates
creative constraints. Plus, a good dose of tradition, probably.

4/8/2015 5:45 AM

129

Analog gear is expensive.

4/8/2015 5:40 AM

130

I dont

4/8/2015 5:39 AM

131

Analog is about feeling music physically. Digital is about feeling music emotionally.

4/8/2015 5:38 AM

132

Digital: Workflow, routing, space Analog: to accommodate my DIY hobby

4/8/2015 5:38 AM

133

Recording your own sounds from a hardware synthesizer through many of the $400 guitar pedals I have adds a
lot of unique character to my sound.

4/8/2015 5:33 AM

134

Digital - convenience, portability, "of age", affordable Analog - guitars, amps, because I'm more comfortable with
the equipment and soubd

4/8/2015 5:24 AM

135

I like digital because of the endless opportunities that come along with it. But hybrid can produce amazing results
if done right. No VSTi will ever sound quite like the actual instrument.

4/8/2015 5:18 AM

136

You can record certain effects with analog equipment that you can't do otherwise.

4/8/2015 5:14 AM

137

Personally easier

4/8/2015 4:59 AM

138

I don't have money to buy Mich hardware and it's more flexible.

4/8/2015 4:52 AM

139

i prefer digital, it is cheaper and simpler to do stuff with, and i can easily create what i want without all the weird
stuff to worry about.

4/8/2015 4:50 AM

140

Precision

4/8/2015 4:38 AM

141

i like digital analog emulators. sounds better than actual analog, imo and it is much easier to use.

4/8/2015 4:36 AM

142

More control and options

4/8/2015 4:31 AM

143

Its more convenient, less expensive, easy to edit

4/8/2015 4:31 AM

144

Hybrid because why not get the best of both worlds?

4/8/2015 4:29 AM

145

Digital synths and effects are far more capable and sound just as good or better than analog synths. They also
cost a lot less and are more portable.

4/8/2015 4:19 AM

146

No money

4/8/2015 4:14 AM

147

Both have advantages. I love my prophet 8 but sometimes massive does the trick

4/8/2015 4:14 AM

148

everythingis inthe box

4/8/2015 4:06 AM

149

4/8/2015 3:56 AM

150

I don't prefer either, but more analog stuff would be cool.

4/8/2015 3:55 AM

151

Because Digital Is Easier To Automate

4/8/2015 3:43 AM

152

Cheaper

4/8/2015 3:42 AM

153

They both have their place. The right tool for the purpose is the important part.

4/8/2015 3:30 AM

154

I don't have money to buy analog equipment, but i'd love to try it out one day.

4/8/2015 3:24 AM

4/8/2015 3:20 AM

4/8/2015 2:51 AM

so much easier to work with and in today's day and age hardware isn't necessary in order to be successful

4/8/2015 2:51 AM

167

Digital is easier.

4/8/2015 2:50 AM

168

Analog tends to sound warmer, if that makes any sense.

4/8/2015 2:49 AM

169

No preference

4/8/2015 2:40 AM

170

Digital is obviously faster, so it's great when I need to explore a very wider range of sonic possibilities, but analog
forces me to focus on composition instead of sound design, and I can get complete projects more quickly.

4/8/2015 2:38 AM

171

Analog is too expensive. Digital is easier.

4/8/2015 2:34 AM

172

piracy

4/8/2015 2:34 AM

173

Analog allows you to mess around more, whereas digital is more portable.

4/8/2015 2:25 AM

174

There's something about physically turning knobs and routing.

4/8/2015 2:24 AM

175

Easier, not too into production yet - analog is quite a commitment

4/8/2015 2:21 AM

176

It's mobile, easier to transport

4/8/2015 2:12 AM

177

Its way more convenient.

4/8/2015 2:08 AM

178

I like to combine the two.

4/8/2015 2:06 AM

179

idk

4/8/2015 2:02 AM

180

I dont

4/8/2015 2:02 AM

181

Analog for characteristically natural sound Digital for ease of use

4/8/2015 1:59 AM

182

Digital is the best for processing and mixing, but analogue synthesis can add an organic element to the sound
due to overdrive/characteristic filters

4/8/2015 1:57 AM

183

because

4/8/2015 1:55 AM

184

Easier to save settings, can take work on the go without dragging along tons of hardware

4/8/2015 1:55 AM

185

Digital makes life easier, analog generally sounds better and can be more fun.

4/8/2015 1:54 AM

186

I prefer both, but I like analog for how bad it sounds. I like digital for how clean and consistent it sounds. The new
analogs sound like digital gear to me. Often I'll combine a digital and analog synth as one patch.

4/8/2015 1:54 AM

187

I prefer analog sound but digital is easier to make

4/8/2015 1:54 AM

188

Ease of use.

4/8/2015 1:54 AM

189

I switch between the two. Analog for that warm sound, digital for ease.

4/8/2015 1:50 AM

190

I enjoy being able to do everything with just my pc, but I would like to get into analog someday.

4/8/2015 1:50 AM

191

I like both. It depends on the particular sound or vibe of the particular song.

4/8/2015 1:50 AM

192

More control

4/8/2015 1:50 AM

193

Analog has great tone which I love for things like guitar. But digital effects and synths can do crazy stuff analog
never could.

I think the power of digital resources out weigh any sense of "fatness" from analog.

211

Don't have analog equipment / familiarity (yet)

4/8/2015 1:24 AM

212

Though I employ a number of analog tools, working digitally (or "in the box") when it comes specifically to the
production stage allows one to effortlessly pull out effects rigs, complex synthesizers, arrays of drum kits, and
even entire reverberation chambers at the click of a mouse. Needless to say, this helps the creative juices flowing
quite well.

4/8/2015 1:24 AM

Can't afford any of the analog gear. Even if I could, digital saves so much space.

4/8/2015 1:22 AM

I have only started producing recently and have not been able to get my hands on any analog things, thus I prefer
producing on digital simply because I have not tried analog.

4/8/2015 12:55 AM

Stupid question. All music is processed digitally these days.

4/8/2015 12:49 AM

I like to use some instruments I know how to play (piano and guitar) analog because it's more efficient for me to
find the riff or sound I'm looking for but otherwise all digital.

4/8/2015 12:46 AM

253

digital because it is more accessible

4/8/2015 12:45 AM

254

Digital is significantly less expensive. Good hardware synths start at around $2000USD, and a modular build
would cost much more. Whereas $2000-$3000 in software/samples can get you everything you need for a very
long time.

4/8/2015 12:45 AM

255

It's easier and cheaper

4/8/2015 12:45 AM

It's the knobs. I can't afford the big digital workstations and I can't leave my knobs and faders behind. Gotta be
analog for me!

4/8/2015 12:44 AM

257

I prefer both, i like digital to record and edit, but analog so i can play the music live and feel it more, jafeel?

4/8/2015 12:36 AM

267

I prefer digital because there is a wider variety of sounds to choose from. It's also quicker and less tedious than
analog.

Tbh I don't really have any analog synths, which is the only reason I prefer digital. I'm super interested in analog
synths though, and will go hybrid once I have enough for one.

4/8/2015 12:20 AM

282

Anything with melodies or harmony etc I prefer to do on a piano. Anything which chords I do digitally because I
suck at knowing chords and are better doing chords analytically. Also, analogue is more expensive than digital
and I'm broke. Also, for answer 7, I've made like 10 dollars off youtube videos this month. So Technically it is
income, albeit not a lot.

4/8/2015 12:15 AM

286

I'd go analog if I had the cash.

4/8/2015 12:15 AM

287

I chose hybrid, but I typically prefer digital for it's repeatability and predictability, and analog for it's idiosyncrasies.
Another reason I prefer analog is that electrons moving through a circuit travel at or near the speed of light.
Nothing in a computer even comes close to those speeds. This is important for things like equalisation, filtering,
and compressors in particular.

4/8/2015 12:15 AM

Plus, the ability to save my patches are a huge bonus

4/8/2015 12:07 AM

The vast majority of hardware synths are too expensive for me, and I like the flexibility of precisely automating 20

4/8/2015 12:06 AM

Analog is warm and you have knobs to play with.

Almost always analog, but it depends on the style of music I'm creating. Also, I don't always have an analog
option so digital becomes the default.

4/7/2015 11:29 PM

I would love to have the option to record on tape and mix digitally, or send digital mixes to tape . . . dat warm tape

4/7/2015 11:24 PM

342

Easier, everything is cleaner and more adjustable

4/7/2015 11:22 PM

343

Purely for ease of use. I'd love to live-track everything with real instruments, but I'd be saving for years to have a
nice sounding room. Digital allows me to get decent-to-good sounding recordings immediately.

4/7/2015 11:22 PM

344

Space, monetary and time constraints.

4/7/2015 11:19 PM

4/7/2015 11:17 PM

4/7/2015 10:51 PM

377

I prefer how analog sounds, but I prefer how digital affects my wallet

4/7/2015 10:51 PM

and ability to keep everything in the same place (computer)

4/7/2015 10:51 PM

Both have their perks.

4/7/2015 10:50 PM

what is analog?

4/7/2015 10:33 PM

400

digital: limitless instruments.

4/7/2015 10:33 PM

401

Digital because I don't need to buy a 3000$ Korg synthesizer when I can use a ton of plugins that do 100x more.
Yes the analog machines sound amazing and are easy to use, but VSTs can sound just as great.

I like the warmth of analog but the convenience and ease of using a digital sequencer.

4/7/2015 10:30 PM

404

digital takes up no physical space

4/7/2015 10:29 PM

405

I use digital nowadays solely because it's extremely difficult to learn/buy a bunch of instruments in college. I
would use a combination of both once I get up to par and have the time and place to do something as loud as
record music.

Analog hardware is expensive but it is something i'd love buy if I had the money.

4/7/2015 10:22 PM

410

More warmth (sorry for the cliche) and the signal flow is more rewarding because running a nice synth through a
bunch of hardware is more more enjoyable than twiddling knobs with a mouse.

4/7/2015 10:19 PM

411

1. I work on a computer all day 2. Latency is almost a non-issue on hardware 3. Tactile controls for the gear are
easier for me to create.

4/7/2015 10:19 PM

412

It's just what I'm used to.

4/7/2015 10:18 PM

I really prefer analog. I like to feel the instruments sounds in my hands

4/7/2015 10:16 PM

4/7/2015 10:15 PM

415

You can do a lot more with digital

4/7/2015 10:15 PM

I mostly work with MIDI and in my experience I have a much easier time manipulating my tracks the way I want.

Analog

4/7/2015 10:13 PM

419

Analog sounds warmer, digital has way more possibilities though.

4/7/2015 10:13 PM

420

If the question refers to using an analog/digital recording setup, I prefer digital because of its ease of use and
availability. If the question refers to using live instruments vs. Digital synthesis, I prefer live instruments because I
have a stronger background there.

4/7/2015 10:13 PM

The thrill of a successful multi-performer live recordingrecording!

4/7/2015 10:02 PM

good together.

The sound of a cranked old halfstack moving lots of air is very raw. I don't think you can really recreate this sound
with, for example, AXE FX

4/7/2015 9:55 PM

443

It's cheaper and more accessible. Digital production is also easier while traveling, since I don't need to lug around
any heavy equipment.

4/7/2015 9:55 PM

444

I'm a musician as well as a sound engineer.

4/7/2015 9:54 PM

445

Digital is easier and cheaper, but analog often sounds better

4/7/2015 9:52 PM

446

Digital was made to give all the benefits of analog without the price and the hassle. Hassle free production is
incredibly valuable. Having said that, analog still has better response times and feels more hands on, so it's great
for performance.

4/7/2015 9:51 PM

447

Digital is easier to manipulate in my opinion.

4/7/2015 9:50 PM

448

I have never tried analog but I like digital because having all of your synths and samples in a folder is very
convenient and doesn't take up as much space as the analog hardware would.

I usually write the framework for tunes on the Piano-- then arrange the melodies and hooks on guitar (my primary
instrument). Once the tune is written, I'll use MIDI to record piano and drums-- use an interface to record guitars,
bass and vocals. I've been using ableton for about 6 months with a lot of success.

4/7/2015 9:35 PM

470

Both have their own sounds and uses its all about the sound you are trying to get and the best way to get it

4/7/2015 9:35 PM

471

By analog, I mean you have to use real instruments. Trust me, using real instruments makes you a musician and
it makes you feel like a musician. Copy-pasting sounds on ableton doesn't really do it justice. Plus, using a real
guitar/bass guitar brings out the life of the music way more. It's hard to describe, but it makes it pop. Plus, when
you record real instruments, it forces you to move fast and accept what the sound is, helping you create/finish
songs way faster and better, otherwise you get stuck in an endless tweak loop.

4/7/2015 9:34 PM

472

I LOVE analog. Always gets me inspired. Just not practical when on the road and constantly switching between
and tweaking projects. Im trying to get ideas down as fast as possible and plugins help that. Like the Waves API
2500 for example. love it! Instead of routing outboard gear I plop on the plugin. If I'm hellbent on that sound when
I have access to one and im doing final tweaks then I'll use it

4/7/2015 9:31 PM

473

I record digitally but sometimes use analog effects. It really depends on the sound I'm going for, but I can typically
achieve most of what I need digitally. As a keys player most of my patches are digital but a few use hardware,
analog synths.

4/7/2015 9:31 PM

474

Both have pros and cons.

4/7/2015 9:26 PM

480

4/7/2015 9:26 PM

no particular reason

4/7/2015 9:24 PM

483

I prefer a mix.

4/7/2015 9:23 PM

484

I prefer digital due to the portability and also being a programmer I can make my own VSTs. But analog lends to
new creative discoveries due to the way I interact with it.

4/7/2015 9:21 PM

I don't own any outside equipment. I just have a keyboard, mouse, and headset.

4/7/2015 9:21 PM

487

Analog has more grit and gives you uniqueness too, it also just plain sounds better out of the box.

4/7/2015 9:20 PM

488

Both have their benefits. Analog sounds more "pure" as its not sampled from anything but digital give you way
more freedom to modulate sounds in very different ways.

4/7/2015 9:20 PM

489

Easier, less equipment to buy. I can make music anywhere that I have my laptop, nothing else required.

4/7/2015 9:19 PM

I just use what I can afford. Is sampling from vinyl considered analog?

4/7/2015 9:16 PM

We are able to recreate all those "analog artifacts" perfectly with digital gear using emulations, sounding 100%
the same as the original. This is not about how life started in this planet, its about recreating some small nuances
that -we- created on hardware.

4/7/2015 9:11 PM

Hybrid is the most powerful for an independent producer

4/7/2015 9:11 PM

500

Faster and much more flexibility

4/7/2015 9:11 PM

501

Both have their merits. Digital is really easy and cheap but to some degree it doesn't get the sound quality that
comes with analog. Analog is very expensive and difficult, but most of the gear sounds great.

4/7/2015 9:10 PM

502

4/7/2015 9:10 PM

4/7/2015 9:09 PM

Simplicity (and digital is less Space consuming)

4/7/2015 9:06 PM

507

4/7/2015 9:06 PM

508

Digital is a lot less expensive and to truly do most of what most music producers do, all you need is a digital
interface. Analog is just for the super-serious people.

4/7/2015 9:06 PM

509

Analog has a more natural feel and sound, but digital is very convenient.

4/7/2015 9:05 PM

510

Warmth of the sound. Often times has little quirks and imperfections that I like.

4/7/2015 9:05 PM

511

Inexperienced with analog

4/7/2015 9:05 PM

512

I prefer digital because it is much easier and quicker to achieve what ever it is you are trying to do. However
analog has its warmth that digital does not emulate that well.

4/7/2015 9:04 PM

513

Digital gives you access to things that you cannot do with analog tech or instruments. Analog can create sounds
that are nearly impossible for digital to reproduce.

4/7/2015 9:02 PM

514

With a fully digital workflow, everything can be edited and corrected nondestructively.

4/7/2015 9:00 PM

515

Digital - I just have my PC and I can do all my work on that

4/7/2015 8:59 PM

516

I like a solid mix of both. I love to create analog and add digital components to the composition.

4/7/2015 8:59 PM

517

The lack of recording space and the wide array of orchestral instruments I have access to.

4/7/2015 8:59 PM

518

Digital has a lower price of entry, analog has great sound qualities. That's why I chose both.

4/7/2015 8:59 PM

519

Digital, cause it is comfortable to sit at the computer

4/7/2015 8:57 PM

520

Owned Ampex AG440C. Too much maintenance AND SPACE NEEDED FOR OUTBOARD GEAR.

4/7/2015 8:57 PM

521

Analog gear is generally more spontaneous and expressive.

4/7/2015 8:57 PM

522

Digital is more versatile but there are some sounds (certain percussion, guitars) I can only create acoustically

4/7/2015 8:55 PM

523

I prefer the tool that works the best for my current need, and what inspires me to do weird things.

4/7/2015 8:55 PM

524

I play guitar, drums and piano and feel I put more of myself into songs if I perform them. On the other hand, it's
often easier to just program melodies

4/7/2015 8:54 PM

525

I utilize both.

4/7/2015 8:51 PM

4/7/2015 8:43 PM

534

I like recording analogue synths thru good DI's and outboard compression, so that the sound I record into the
DAW is already spicy and lifelike before using any DSP. My affinity for analogue synths and gear is really a
matter of personal taste. It's just another color in the crayon box.

4/7/2015 8:40 PM

535

Easier to flesh out an idea when you have a potential cast of thousands.

4/7/2015 8:39 PM

536

Analog guitar tone is nice but expensive; modern modeling software comes very close. Same goes for drums.

4/7/2015 8:38 PM

537

Analog is more tactile, easier to get good results

4/7/2015 8:38 PM

4/7/2015 8:32 PM

548

I like the inflection of analog and the limitless possibilities of digital production.

4/7/2015 8:32 PM

549

I prefer an analog sound digitally, if you understand what I mean. The slightly drifting sound recorded in a digital
format, you know.

4/7/2015 8:32 PM

550

I prefer digital for the ease of it. I would love a fully analogue setup though, something about just how you can
twist one knob and change the sound without any automation amazes me.

4/7/2015 8:31 PM

The mixture of both gives you the best of both worlds. Editing in analog is prohibitively time consuming and
expensive.

4/7/2015 8:13 PM

573

Digital is a lot more simple for a home studio

4/7/2015 8:11 PM

574

I can do things on instruments that cannot be synthesized

4/7/2015 8:10 PM

575

Depends on instruments being recorded. I.e.: Strings = Digital, Horns = Analog

4/7/2015 8:09 PM

576

Digital for having more flexible control over everything.

4/7/2015 8:08 PM

577

analog for sound, digital for the convenience/recall ability

4/7/2015 8:08 PM

578

I can't make it work in my mind how digital works

4/7/2015 8:07 PM

579

I do nearly all my mixing and mastering digitally, and use quite a few instrument VSTs, but I still use a lot of
analog instruments run into a USB audio interface. A good example is the way I record guitar tracks - I almost
never mic a cabinet anymore - usually I run DI to a Guitar Rig VST, so the instrument itself is still analog, but all
the signal processing happens in the DAW. It's the best of both worlds - I get the expressiveness of a real guitar,
but with the flexibility of digital processing. I will very occasionally record to tape and then digitize the track and
mix it in the DAW, but usually only if it's someone/something I can't get into my home studio. That may go away
soon, though, as I've recently gotten a second USB interface for my laptop, so I may just run the mic to the
laptop next time the need arises.

4/7/2015 8:06 PM

580

It's easier for me to keep it all digital

4/7/2015 8:06 PM

581

Like the warmth of analog sound but love the usability of digital instruments

4/7/2015 8:06 PM

4/7/2015 8:00 PM

Each has it's benefits. Digital is easier to manipulate predictably, while analog "feels" real

4/7/2015 7:59 PM

592

Analog is awesome for making your own equipment and filters though requires more work. But Digital offers
many mode options right in your face.

I use a lot of guitar effects pedals, because it makes it easier to replicate in a live setting. Using a lot of digital
effects would be way too difficult to replicate without a computer.

4/7/2015 7:55 PM

596

I've never used any analog equipment for producing music. However I think that I would prefer it more because I
have limited experience with playing physical instruments (keyboards, etc).

4/7/2015 7:55 PM

597

I know my digital workspace and I am able to get things done quickly. It is much easier to mangle audio and I can
essentially turn any sound into an instrument. The fact that I can warp sounds into something completely different
sounding is why I like digital format a lot

4/7/2015 7:55 PM

Analog is out of my price range

Easy of use, portability, collaboration

4/7/2015 7:47 PM

I use digital for synths, drum samples, mixing/mastering. I use guitars and actual percussion instruments (along
with digital) because I feel they have not been equaled by digital equipment (or at least I haven't figured out how
to do it).

4/7/2015 7:46 PM

I've never used analog methods, so I don't know anything about them.

I like both.

4/7/2015 7:39 PM

615

Digital is far easier to work with, but I use controllers (Push, TR-8) because it's more inspirational and fun than
drawing in notes on the piano roll.

4/7/2015 7:39 PM

616

Digits vsts are the easiest way to get a sound I want rather than buying an analog unit.

4/7/2015 7:39 PM

617

Less hassle with cables and shit, more focus on making it go doof.

4/7/2015 7:39 PM

618

Portability and ease of use. I almost always have my laptop on me which means I can always open up my DAW
and mess around when I have downtime. A physical instrument, such as guitar, would be much harder to do this
with.

4/7/2015 7:37 PM

4/7/2015 7:29 PM

The sound of digital music can tend to be very sterile sounding.

4/7/2015 7:28 PM

633

Both are good for different things.

4/7/2015 7:27 PM

634

Digital is easy and relatively cheaper. Analog has differing tone qualities and can give some amazing sound. I'm
also just of the old school mind, partly. They did it before this way, why can't I now?

4/7/2015 7:27 PM

635

I don't care either way. It doesn't matter what you use as long as it sounds good.

4/7/2015 7:26 PM

636

Analog is too expensive and too annoying to set up. I still love a good set-up though.

4/7/2015 7:25 PM

637

Don't prefer either; each has its use.

4/7/2015 7:25 PM

638

Analog gives an organic "real feel" that can't be created with digital instruments/effects alone, but digital gives
you the freedom to control any and all aspects of the final sound you are producing

4/7/2015 7:24 PM

639

I prefer a hybrid approach because it allows you to take conventional sounds and mould them into something
completely new. I prefer digital for ease of use.

4/7/2015 7:24 PM

4/7/2015 7:17 PM

Digital

4/7/2015 7:16 PM

4/7/2015 7:16 PM

652

Portability and accessibility

4/7/2015 7:15 PM

653

I find both have their own sound. I prefer to analog sound but also enjoy the flexibility of digital.

4/7/2015 7:14 PM

654

In-the-box digital is great because I can just grab my laptop and put my ideas into a project, having all the tools
and sounds I could possibly need. I don't need all the stuff in my studio, and I don't need a lot of outboard gear
hooked up. But I'm often not that inspired in my DAW. Especially when doing sound design or just trying to
noodle around and figure something out. Having more expressive analog tools when I'm in a rut or don't know
exactly what I'm trying to do has been powerful. I never use my Volca Beats on a track because I have way
better drum synths and samples, but I use it standalone all the time to just think about drum patterns and come
up with new things (for example). Same goes for my other hardware synths.

4/7/2015 7:14 PM

655

Its faster.

4/7/2015 7:13 PM

656

Analog for creative signal chains. Digital for editing convenience.

4/7/2015 7:12 PM

4/7/2015 7:10 PM

Analog tends to sound better in my experience, but Digital is definitely catching up. Also, I can't afford a ton of
analog gear so naturally I want it!

4/7/2015 7:10 PM

It is what I have

4/7/2015 7:10 PM

I'm a programmer at heart. While I'm not the best in performing, I find it a wonderful challenge to throw
expression with digital means.

4/7/2015 7:10 PM

663

I like the ease of use in digital production but also love the analog sound.

4/7/2015 7:09 PM

664

Digital has the capability to create both clean & / or characteristically flawed sound. Also, really really cheap
relative to analog.

4/7/2015 7:08 PM

665

You can get the best of both worlds without being pretentions about analogue vs. digital

4/7/2015 7:08 PM

666

No reason to use expensive hardware when I can do the same digitally.

4/7/2015 7:08 PM

4/7/2015 7:07 PM

668

4/7/2015 7:07 PM

669

Analog is too expensive.

4/7/2015 7:06 PM

670

I can't afford analog gear, for one, and don't feel that it would improve my productions enough to justify the costs.
One day I may own some analog gear more as toys than production tools (though I would use them in my
productions if possible, of course).

4/7/2015 7:05 PM

671

Because I don't own analog equipment

4/7/2015 7:02 PM

672

Digital because I get more control.

4/7/2015 7:01 PM

673

Digital is easier, as anyone with a computer can do it. Analog is expensive, and requires lots of gear.

4/7/2015 7:01 PM

674

Analog sounds better, and Digital is easier. I like to control analog synths with my daw.

4/7/2015 7:01 PM

675

Digitally I have more control and freedom to experiment

4/7/2015 7:00 PM

676

Flexibility and accuracy

4/7/2015 7:00 PM

677

I like hybrid. Often, I write stuff on guitar and then transpose it to keyboard. I have played music for over 25 years
but have no one to jam with anymore, so this has replaced that hobby.

4/7/2015 6:59 PM

678

Because digital is better in most instances

4/7/2015 6:59 PM

679

Analog is more reliable for performance

4/7/2015 6:59 PM

680

Analog allows for more of the human element to come through in the finished product as well as provides an
environment for more unique expressions of the same idea/motif through performance. You aren't stuck
automating LFOs/envelopes/parameter tweaks, one can simply play through a progression/lead with a different
sound, attack or dynamic approach or emphasis. What I prefer about digital is how simply a basic idea can come
together, how broad of a palette there is (you aren't only tracking drums, or guitars, or vocals etc, you can do it all
pretty much simultaneously) and how easy it is to completely re-design a synth sound because the performance
is already locked into midi notes.

4/7/2015 6:58 PM

681

I like using a DAW to organize, record, and work with my music but I prefer to actually write and compose music
with a keyboard, rather than clicking on the notes and arranging them on my laptop.

4/7/2015 6:58 PM

682

More practical and cheaper.

4/7/2015 6:50 PM

Simpler and more efficient workflow

4/7/2015 6:48 PM

4/7/2015 6:47 PM

694

Easier work flow for me

4/7/2015 6:47 PM

Because everything is convenient and accessible

4/7/2015 6:44 PM

699

Analog cause twisting buttons is fun. Digital for the sake of simplicity

4/7/2015 6:43 PM

700

i like a combination of both, they are both equally useful in different ways

4/7/2015 6:43 PM

4/7/2015 6:40 PM

707

I don't have the equipment for analog.

4/7/2015 6:40 PM

708

Analogue for how audio is received. Digital for editing and manipulation.

4/7/2015 6:39 PM

709

i like both! more flexibility digital, more character analog

4/7/2015 6:36 PM

710

Don't have any analog equipment.

4/7/2015 6:36 PM

711

Simpler

4/7/2015 6:34 PM

712

Digital is cost-effective, more accessible to amateurs, and has a wide and helpful online userbase.

4/7/2015 6:34 PM

713

I like a bit of both. Most of my tracks emphasize contrast between the two extremes. Very digital and very analog;
very real/human, and very artificial.

4/7/2015 6:34 PM

714

Cause I dont have analog instruments

4/7/2015 6:33 PM

715

I like to mix both because it allows my brain to program the parts that are static and to perform the parts that are
more organic.

4/7/2015 6:32 PM

716

It depends. I like working in the box until I get to a point where I want a really unique sound or I want to record an
instrument I own. Working in the box is a lot more flexible for swapping out sounds. Analog gets set in stone.
There are trade-offs.

4/7/2015 6:32 PM

717

You really only need a computer for digital production.

4/7/2015 6:31 PM

4/7/2015 6:26 PM

725

Freedom of expression

4/7/2015 6:26 PM

726

No preference. Digital is awesome for it capabilities and flexibility, and Analog for it's naturalness.

4/7/2015 6:25 PM

727

They both have strengths and weaknesses, I find a mix of the two is best for what I do.

4/7/2015 6:24 PM

728

I track analog and mix digital. Analog crosses the 0db and that is worth the effort for me. Hard to beat digital
mixing though.

4/7/2015 6:24 PM

729

Digitial because it takes up much less space and because it's easier to carry around, and analog because some
sounds can only be made with analog synths

4/7/2015 6:24 PM

730

Never even tried analog and I don't care

4/7/2015 6:23 PM

731

digital because of a/d converters, downsampling(im thinking digital samplers), contrast to analog, and flexibility.
analog, because of tangibility, interactivity, limitations, and fundamentally the sound just feels right.

4/7/2015 6:22 PM

732

All of the usual reasons: digital is cheap, fast, high quality, etc. Analog is more tangible, you sometimes get better
results with more limitations, etc

4/7/2015 6:21 PM

733

simplicity and desk space

4/7/2015 6:20 PM

4/7/2015 6:13 PM

741

Digital because it's convenient and cheap :)

4/7/2015 6:11 PM

742

Digital is cheaper and I can virtually create any instrument I want.

4/7/2015 6:11 PM

743

Digital is all in the box. I travel. Analog is overhyped.

4/7/2015 6:10 PM

744

Analog gear usually has much more hands on interface - handling knobs and sliders using your ten digits is
inevitably faster and more precise than using a mouse. On the other hand digital "in the box" approach has
usually both better capabilities for the money spent and the gigantic advantage of being able to save your project
and return to it later, which for a hobbyist with a limited and highly fragmented time for his musical endeavors is a
must have feature. Despite enjoying analog gear a lot I use it mostly for inspiration and get most of my music
making done on a computer.

4/7/2015 6:10 PM

745

Habit. I can get precision easier and faster I find.

4/7/2015 6:09 PM

746

it's easy (jk i don't even know what those words mean)

4/7/2015 6:09 PM

4/7/2015 6:08 PM

748

Analogs to much work

4/7/2015 6:08 PM

749

I use analog to quickly get my ideas down, and move it to digital once I'm satisfied.

4/7/2015 6:03 PM

4/7/2015 6:00 PM

758

Never really tried analog

4/7/2015 5:58 PM

Digital just for convenience, analog is expensive and takes up space

4/7/2015 5:57 PM

760

A mix of the two broadens your possibilities

4/7/2015 5:57 PM

761

Depends on the instrument

4/7/2015 5:57 PM

762

I grew up playing guitar and sax, I honestly haven't picked either up in a while because I have been focusing on
production lately. I like digital because I feel like I have a blank canvas in front of me and I can paint the sounds I
have in my head. It's like I'm writing a story.

4/7/2015 5:57 PM

763

having a DAW makes working with small details easier. you can make tiny changes in very late stages of the

4/7/2015 5:56 PM

Analog is expensive, bulky, difficult to obtain, and prone to breaking

4/7/2015 5:55 PM

I dont own analog hardware

4/7/2015 5:50 PM

4/7/2015 5:48 PM

I have no room for analog and digital can be contained in a laptop

4/7/2015 5:48 PM

780

Easier to manipulate.

4/7/2015 5:47 PM

781

Cheaper

4/7/2015 5:46 PM

782

Ease of use and space limitations.

4/7/2015 5:45 PM

783

Digital is great for experimenting but analog feels more natural to me because it is all hands on

4/7/2015 5:43 PM

784

Never tried analog - too expensive!

4/7/2015 5:43 PM

785

Digital, because it's less expensive and you have everything in your PC

4/7/2015 5:40 PM

788

Digital is easier to get your thoughts organized.

4/7/2015 5:38 PM

789

Because it allows for me to stay compact in producing.

4/7/2015 5:37 PM

Ease of use.

4/7/2015 5:34 PM

Both have their place.

4/7/2015 5:34 PM

794

Because digital is quicker and more portable.

4/7/2015 5:32 PM

795

I don't own an analog synth. I have seen that they are very expensive if I was to try and invest myself in analog.

4/7/2015 5:32 PM

796

It's easier on the back end

4/7/2015 5:30 PM

797

physical interaction with analog gear makes for easier production

4/7/2015 5:30 PM

798

What Im used too

4/7/2015 5:29 PM

799

It's much faster to tweak multiple physical boxes by hand than it is to tweak single VST's on a shite, slow PC that
needs to be updated every year.

4/7/2015 5:28 PM

800

Prefer digital, same reason as 4.

4/7/2015 5:27 PM

801

Much cheaper as I am too young to pay for much

4/7/2015 5:25 PM

802

Digital because it is easier, and cheaper. Analog for it's "warmth".

4/7/2015 5:24 PM

803

strictly digital only because it is easier to do and edit and far quicker.

4/7/2015 5:24 PM

digital: convenience and flexibility

4/7/2015 5:23 PM

i have been playing guitar for eleven years and sometimes its just easier to record/figure something out on a live
instrument

4/7/2015 5:23 PM

807

analog is expensive and takes up room, and i'm not a fan of having tons of shit in my house.

4/7/2015 5:22 PM

808

Analog

4/7/2015 5:22 PM

809

Cheaper and more convenient.

4/7/2015 5:22 PM

810

Digital = Sound Quality and easy to use

4/7/2015 5:21 PM

811

My only option at the moment. Analog gear is quite expensive and I don't have the extra working space.

4/7/2015 5:21 PM

812

Digital work has more capabilities and requires less physical gear.

4/7/2015 5:21 PM

813

Analog got the feel down and digital got the versatility. Using both is the smartest thing to do. I like analog for its
hands-on-vibe while digital usually takes more to set up/program/menu-diving/midi-mapping.

4/7/2015 5:19 PM

814

Both rule

4/7/2015 5:19 PM

815

Easier with what I have

4/7/2015 5:18 PM

816

I prefer analog as I play bass/guitars. Which is not to say that I don't run them through any number of crazy
analog OR digital pedals.

4/7/2015 5:17 PM

817

Digital is much cheaper and easier to set up and use. There's a lot of great plugins to help with "warmth" that
digital sources often lack. If I had the money and space, I would definitely incorporate analog gear in my setup.

4/7/2015 5:17 PM

818

analog is just cooler man

4/7/2015 5:16 PM

Cheaper. No clutter. Little risk - if I hate a $150 synth, I'm out $150. If I hate the $2500

more than $150 short.

4/7/2015 5:12 PM

821

because it is cheaper

4/7/2015 5:12 PM

822

I prefer the sound you get from digital rather than analog

4/7/2015 5:11 PM

823

I selected digital as can only currently produce music digitally although I am looking to buy a cheap vintage
synthesizer.

4/7/2015 5:11 PM

824

Analog costs money

4/7/2015 5:09 PM

825

The upside of producing analog is almost non existent

4/7/2015 5:05 PM

826

I really do prefer analog because it's more reliable. I rarely have issues with analog gear, whereas digital has all
sorts of issues.

4/7/2015 5:04 PM

827

speed of workflow

4/7/2015 5:04 PM

828

I'm a perfectionist. :-P

4/7/2015 5:03 PM

829

Both have their place. I like to start with analog and use digital to achieve my sound goals.

4/7/2015 5:03 PM

830

Both have there pros and cons. Analog has a more organic feel, but I love how digital allows for things that
analog is not capable of.

4/7/2015 5:02 PM

831

I'm completely unfamiliar with analogue, I don't have access to that kind of equipment.

4/7/2015 4:59 PM

No money for analog

4/7/2015 4:58 PM

838

No preference, each has benefits

4/7/2015 4:57 PM

839

Digital for speed, ease, affordability and ability to 'undo'. Analogue for the sound, authenticity and creative
control.

4/7/2015 4:57 PM

840

It's less expensive.

4/7/2015 4:56 PM

841

No preference

4/7/2015 4:55 PM

842

I dont, same same but different:)

4/7/2015 4:55 PM

843

Analog isn't portable.

4/7/2015 4:54 PM

844

Analogue really doesn't offer much that digital can't recreate today, and while it may be cool to have the
physically, you have to drop about $10,000 to get anywhere substantial.

4/7/2015 4:54 PM

845

aesthetics, tradition

4/7/2015 4:54 PM

846

Nothing can be as effective as software but true art is in the process and the ability to be unique or create with
your hands

4/7/2015 4:53 PM

both have their charms

4/7/2015 4:52 PM

848

I prefer playing instruments physically

4/7/2015 4:52 PM

849

Digital is convenient, analogue has a certain sound

4/7/2015 4:52 PM

It' so rich in detail to use analog.

4/7/2015 4:51 PM

4/7/2015 4:49 PM

855

i do both because i add acoustic instruments to my in-the-box stuff to flesh it out more.

4/7/2015 4:48 PM

856

Ease of use. Setting up half a dozen analogue synths for each track is a nightmare.

4/7/2015 4:47 PM

857

I use both

4/7/2015 4:46 PM

858

Easier to control since my studio is mobile.

4/7/2015 4:45 PM

859

First, I like horns. Second, there is no substitute for the expression of a person and trying to recreate that digitally
is a nightmare of minutiae and fussiness. As for digital? Man, the overhead is so low! An analog desk with miles
of tape and an editing suite? I love the sound of it but it's kind of expensive and impractical for beginners.

4/7/2015 4:45 PM

860

Cost-effectiveness; lack of experience with analog

4/7/2015 4:43 PM

861

digital - sky is your limit analog - music theory, for when digital feels too daunting and inhuman

4/7/2015 4:43 PM

862

Easier to work with in my opinion

4/7/2015 4:41 PM

863

I don't have to invest in hardware to produce digitally.

4/7/2015 4:38 PM

864

I don't really prefer either

4/7/2015 4:38 PM

865

cannot afford analog gear at the moment. analog gear requires more space.

4/7/2015 4:37 PM

866

Because learning to produce things digitally takes waaay too long when you don't know what knob does what.
Also, any instrument (irregardless of of you've played it before), you can just start making sounds and noises as
soon as you pick it up.

4/7/2015 4:37 PM

867

Convenience

4/7/2015 4:36 PM

868

Can't beat a turned up tube amp, but some analog rack units are just too expensive.

4/7/2015 4:35 PM

869

I love the ease of use that comes with VSTs, but I also love the malleability and unpredictability of hardware.
They're mostly equal to me, but with different strengths. I definitely prefer distortion in hardware.

4/7/2015 4:35 PM

870

I don't know how to play any analogue instruments :P

4/7/2015 4:34 PM

871

They both have unique sounds and feels.

4/7/2015 4:34 PM

872

I like both. Digital offers a lot in terms of sonic possibilities, and analog lets you know if your song is actually any
good.

4/7/2015 4:34 PM

873

You can't torrent analog :S!

4/7/2015 4:33 PM

874

doesnt really matter, if its good its good

4/7/2015 4:33 PM

875

They both have their advantages. Digital always gets exactly what you want, and analog puts some humanity into
the mix.

4/7/2015 4:32 PM

876

Digital is very portable, i dont have much space

4/7/2015 4:31 PM

877

Hybrid

4/7/2015 4:31 PM

878

Analogue for the noise and compression.

4/7/2015 4:30 PM

879

I like the live aspect. The sensation of analog but the breadth of digital. Although, I must admit that breadth is
more of an illusion.

4/7/2015 4:29 PM

880

Digital

4/7/2015 4:28 PM

881

everyone creates digitally. even if you record analog instruments, all mix/edit is digital.

4/7/2015 4:23 PM

digital side.

4/7/2015 4:22 PM

888

Speed of workflow.

4/7/2015 4:19 PM

889

I think both realms have their advantages.

4/7/2015 4:18 PM

890

I like analog synth because there's something special about having a physical box to manipulate and create with.

4/7/2015 4:18 PM

891

Digital ease of access and price of plugins vs cost of hardware

4/7/2015 4:17 PM

892

I'm just not a very good musician!

4/7/2015 4:16 PM

893

It's easier to arrange on the fly.

4/7/2015 4:15 PM

894

Digital for the ease of it, analog for certain things you just can't do (as well) in digital. Like tape-loops for example.

4/7/2015 4:14 PM

895

I grew up playing guitar so the idea of having a solid instrument in front of you appeals to me. It also imposes
limitations.

4/7/2015 4:11 PM

896

Digital, because I'm too poor for analog shit

4/7/2015 4:10 PM

897

Price

4/7/2015 4:08 PM

898

I use both

4/7/2015 4:08 PM

899

Easier because i don't have enough room

4/7/2015 4:08 PM

900

Hybrid because both systems offer their own pros and cons

4/7/2015 4:08 PM

901

They both have inherent advantages and disadvantages.

4/7/2015 4:07 PM

902

Lower costs for digital recording, started investing in analog synths due to reliability (no crashes, glitches, etc.)

4/7/2015 4:06 PM

903

Don't really prefer, only have digital equipment.

4/7/2015 4:05 PM

904

Its difficult to get a realistic sounding guitar sound on computer

4/7/2015 4:05 PM

905

Both of these have a sense of control which i prefer, from the analog feel of developing sounds with a more
organic feel and within a more physical realm and then again with digital where you have more possibilities of
manipulation without hardware

4/7/2015 4:04 PM

906

No analog equipment and digital is easier to transport

4/7/2015 4:03 PM

907

because it is easier to be creative.

4/7/2015 4:03 PM

908

More freedom to experiment with digital

4/7/2015 4:01 PM

909

Digitally produced music can be edited much much more easily than analogue.

4/7/2015 4:00 PM

910

I've only worked with digital so far.

4/7/2015 4:00 PM

911

It's real

4/7/2015 4:00 PM

912

Because I cannot buy analog equipment right now and digital gives you a lot of control.

4/7/2015 3:59 PM

913

idk

4/7/2015 3:59 PM

914

lush sounds m8

4/7/2015 3:58 PM

915

I do both because both can be fun

4/7/2015 3:58 PM

916

Analog can give a sense of grit and interactivity or immediacy, while digital offers near limitless routing, signal
chains, etc, as well as convenience. They're both great

4/7/2015 3:58 PM

917

Analog is so warm and alive, where digital can suck the life out of a project if you're not careful. That's why i mix
the two.

4/7/2015 3:58 PM

918

i want to try analog gear but I don't have the money or space for it.

4/7/2015 3:57 PM

4/7/2015 3:55 PM

921

Easier to manage

4/7/2015 3:55 PM

922

There is a realistic quality to analog instrumentation, and often the timbre and quality of the analog can not be
reproduced through digital means alone. Digital production however allows for more experimentation and
improvisation within a track

4/7/2015 3:55 PM

923

Convenience, Price.

4/7/2015 3:55 PM

924

I say digital because, as a high school senior going on to college without a job, music production hardware is
wayyy too expensive at the moment. I do have a Launchkey 49, but that's it, really. I'm going to assume that
doesn't count as analog (if it does, consider me a hybrid producer). But once I get the chance, I'd be more than
happy to buy myself an audio interface/mixer, more MIDI controllers (Launchpad Pro, Behringer BCR-2000,
Ableton Push, yes please), some hardware synths, and maybe a fully modular synthesizer system.

4/7/2015 3:55 PM

925

Analog - texture Digital - "Undo", easy tweaking

4/7/2015 3:54 PM

926

Analog for it's tone shaping abilities and digital for it's sheer power and unlimited capabilities in editing. Hence
why I go hybrid, although I prefer analog synths always (if I can get my hands on one).

4/7/2015 3:54 PM

927

It's just so much easier to do everything on one device.

4/7/2015 3:52 PM

928

easier to carry and move

4/7/2015 3:51 PM

929

quicker, cheaper and no siginificant differences in quality

4/7/2015 3:51 PM

930

I prefer to work digitally because it provides so many to get things done quickly. Writing is no longer taking place
on a pen and paper but within my DAW where i can organize and compose and create quality demos within
hours

4/7/2015 3:51 PM

931

I prefer digital because it was what I was taught on. I know how to manipulate it to get it to work the way I want.

4/7/2015 3:50 PM

932

More widely available and cheaper.

4/7/2015 3:50 PM

933

I like the digital sound

4/7/2015 3:49 PM

934

Analog is nice but digital is so much more functional and practical, for example It doesn't require much extra
hardware usually.

4/7/2015 3:49 PM

935

I prefer both. Analog because it's way more in depth to have the hardware in front of you, as a physical object.
And digital, because hardware is just too damn expensive, and sometimes, the software does exactly what you
need it to do.

4/7/2015 3:48 PM

936

Analog recording is much more complicated and has higher costs. The hardware synths also don't have as much
control as their software equivalents.

4/7/2015 3:47 PM

937

analog because I love gear.

4/7/2015 3:47 PM

938

It's easier and less expensive

4/7/2015 3:47 PM

939

Hardware is too hard to move

4/7/2015 3:46 PM

940

Don't have any analog gear lol

4/7/2015 3:46 PM

941

Digital is convinient and doesn't require much hardware. Guitars are the only thing I have to record.

4/7/2015 3:42 PM

942

digital is easier

4/7/2015 3:42 PM

943

I try to use anything at my disposal

4/7/2015 3:42 PM

944

I prefer Analog as it is real ans not a representative of the signal. An analogy would be, which is preferable,
looking at a Van Gogh Painting or looking at a photograph of a Van Gogh Painting. Software sounds very 2
dimensional and tame, hardware analog does not have those restrictions.

4/7/2015 3:42 PM

945

Digital for the ease, analog for the tactile aspect

4/7/2015 3:41 PM

946

Best of both worlds

4/7/2015 3:39 PM

947

I use both so have no preference. It all depends on the mood I'm trying to convey or the type of sound I'm
attempting to create.

4/7/2015 3:39 PM

951

Digital for ease of use and inexpensive. If I could afford Analog and had better space I would

4/7/2015 3:38 PM

952

I'm a minimalist. I prefer to use as little as possible to get the largest effect. Plus, digital production is less
expensive.

4/7/2015 3:37 PM

953

They both have their pros and con's, digital makes it easier to jam with myself when there isn't anyone else to
play with.

4/7/2015 3:36 PM

954

analog is the feel of a real knob to tweak, nothing comparable... digital is sometimes more like unlimited in terms
of possible functionality, routing or tweaking.

4/7/2015 3:35 PM

955

digital simplicity and accuracy

4/7/2015 3:34 PM

956

Analog gear is expensive and I think digital sound fine.

4/7/2015 3:34 PM

4/7/2015 3:28 PM

963

Digital because of the simplicity. I use mixers and pre amps and some analog devices. I personally prefer digital
because there is less worry of signal flow and wires going wrong

4/7/2015 3:27 PM

964

Digital is more accessible

4/7/2015 3:26 PM

4/7/2015 3:25 PM

967

Cheaper, more precise, all in one machine

4/7/2015 3:24 PM

968

Digital for convenience. Analog tools are awesome and impart a sound I like but I don't have a lot of the
experience or resources to use it in a way that would really benefit what I'm doing. I'll resample through analog
hardware but the tracking and mixdown are all digital.

4/7/2015 3:23 PM

969

Digital is less expensive, but analogue can have a good sound.

4/7/2015 3:22 PM

970

Old synths sound better

4/7/2015 3:22 PM

971

I do hybrid so best of both worlds.

4/7/2015 3:21 PM

972

Analog instruments are way more fun to play with it then digital. I use the digital environment because of the
workflow.

4/7/2015 3:21 PM

973

Digital is cheaper and more accessible.

4/7/2015 3:16 PM

974

Haven't messed with analog yet. Learning the basics first.

4/7/2015 3:16 PM

I enjoy analog because of the feeling of using a real instrument, and I've grown up using analog equipment.

I prefer the warm sound provided by analog instruments and the creative boundaries that they put me in. These
boundaries make me feel as if I have a certain zone in which I must work and the limitations of the instruments
thereby become guidelines for my creativity. Digital because the possibilities are endless

I Prefer digital, because i like the idea that all i need to write music is my pc and nothing else. That means that i
can make music where ever i feel like, and that i'm not limited by hardware synths, drummachines etc.

I do not have the money for analog equipment.

4/7/2015 3:11 PM

At the moment, I own no analogue equipment or money with which to buy such equipment, and it's not particularly
high on my list of things to acquire. However, if I ever get the money, I'd really like to build something modular.

Ease of use, cost, flexibility, high variety, sounds that can't be made one analog (ie granular synthesis)

Use both mainly digital for speed and ease

Analog because of warmth, Digital because of versitility

4/7/2015 3:05 PM

Both have advantages, unique sounds, and can be completely organic.

4/7/2015 3:04 PM

Digital because it's easier and I'm lazy as fuck

Analog costs way too much and digital is much more simple.

Analog has a distinct sound but lacks the quick workflow of digital

Digital for convenience Analog for that familiar sound

i noramally write the songs with an acoustic guitar then stick a drum track down and built from there

I can't afford any analog gear

Digital is easier and has more power to make stuff

It doesn't matter, what matters is the talent of the musician.

Don't need to buy hardware synths.

4/7/2015 2:40 PM

Well because it's cheaper, but I admit that it would be real fun too have a real synthesizer :)

4/7/2015 2:38 PM

1006

Because I cannot afford hardware at the moment.

4/7/2015 2:38 PM

1007

The point of using analog software is stupid. You can replicate any of those "analog" sound on digital
synthesizer.

4/7/2015 2:30 PM

1008

computers are indefinitely powerful. analogue isn't like that.

4/7/2015 2:30 PM

I don't have analog hardware. By default, I prefer digital because it is all I have.

4/7/2015 2:24 PM

1010

I like analog cause it is fun to push buttons and shit but it's too expensive. I like digital cause it takes up no space.

4/7/2015 2:21 PM

1011

I prefer digital because you can replicate almost any analog sound with enough skill and analog synths are
extremely expensive.
