It's just what I have available. I make music digitally, but I try to make imperfections so that it sounds more
natural. Stuff, like subtle, slow vibrato on synths so that they slightly detune, or a slight pitch envelope at the start
of a note.
4/9/2015 10:34 PM
analog sounds more organic but digital is easier and can make weirder & cooler stuff

Analog for acoustic instruments (vocals, guitar, etc), digital for everything else. Digital is way more flexible and
can do more. I believe sound quality can be made to sound more 'analog' or 'warm' by cleverly using saturation
throughout the mixing process.

In this day and age, the only advantage held by physical electronic music equipment (not including recording
equipment, obviously) over software is the satisfaction that comes from working with tangible tools rather than
staring at a screen - a genuine concern, but not one that is justified by the expense and inconvenience unless you
have loads of cash to burn. And on the subject of that supposedly inimitable analog sound - a) sure, physical
synths might sound somewhat different from virtual ones, but "different" is not necessarily better sounding, and b)
if it is the analog sound you are after, there are tons of competent "virtual analog" soft synths and effects
available.

i don't have any analog equipment (does a 25-key midi keyboard count as analog?), so digital is my only

I prefer hybrid between the two because there are simply some instruments that can't be sampled. I'm also fairly
limited in my sequencing knowledge and am more comfortable playing parts rather than programming them.

Digital is significantly less expensive. Good hardware synths start at around $2000USD, and a modular build

I chose hybrid, but I typically prefer digital for it's repeatability and predictability, and analog for it's idiosyncrasies.
Another reason I prefer analog is that electrons moving through a circuit travel at or near the speed of light.
Nothing in a computer even comes close to those speeds. This is important for things like equalisation, filtering,
and compressors in particular.

I usually write the framework for tunes on the Piano-- then arrange the melodies and hooks on guitar (my primary
instrument). Once the tune is written, I'll use MIDI to record piano and drums-- use an interface to record guitars,
bass and vocals. I've been using ableton for about 6 months with a lot of success.

By analog, I mean you have to use real instruments. Trust me, using real instruments makes you a musician and
it makes you feel like a musician. Copy-pasting sounds on ableton doesn't really do it justice. Plus, using a real
guitar/bass guitar brings out the life of the music way more. It's hard to describe, but it makes it pop. Plus, when
you record real instruments, it forces you to move fast and accept what the sound is, helping you create/finish
songs way faster and better, otherwise you get stuck in an endless tweak loop.

I LOVE analog. Always gets me inspired. Just not practical when on the road and constantly switching between
and tweaking projects. Im trying to get ideas down as fast as possible and plugins help that. Like the Waves API
2500 for example. love it! Instead of routing outboard gear I plop on the plugin. If I'm hellbent on that sound when
I have access to one and im doing final tweaks then I'll use it

I record digitally but sometimes use analog effects. It really depends on the sound I'm going for, but I can typically

I do nearly all my mixing and mastering digitally, and use quite a few instrument VSTs, but I still use a lot of
analog instruments run into a USB audio interface. A good example is the way I record guitar tracks - I almost
never mic a cabinet anymore - usually I run DI to a Guitar Rig VST, so the instrument itself is still analog, but all
the signal processing happens in the DAW. It's the best of both worlds - I get the expressiveness of a real guitar,
but with the flexibility of digital processing. I will very occasionally record to tape and then digitize the track and
mix it in the DAW, but usually only if it's someone/something I can't get into my home studio. That may go away
soon, though, as I've recently gotten a second USB interface for my laptop, so I may just run the mic to the
laptop next time the need arises.

noodle around and figure something out. Having more expressive analog tools when I'm in a rut or don't know
exactly what I'm trying to do has been powerful. I never use my Volca Beats on a track because I have way
better drum synths and samples, but I use it standalone all the time to just think about drum patterns and come

Analog allows for more of the human element to come through in the finished product as well as provides an
environment for more unique expressions of the same idea/motif through performance. You aren't stuck
automating LFOs/envelopes/parameter tweaks, one can simply play through a progression/lead with a different
sound, attack or dynamic approach or emphasis. What I prefer about digital is how simply a basic idea can come
together, how broad of a palette there is (you aren't only tracking drums, or guitars, or vocals etc, you can do it all
pretty much simultaneously) and how easy it is to completely re-design a synth sound because the performance
is already locked into midi notes.

Analog gear usually has much more hands on interface - handling knobs and sliders using your ten digits is
inevitably faster and more precise than using a mouse. On the other hand digital "in the box" approach has
usually both better capabilities for the money spent and the gigantic advantage of being able to save your project
and return to it later, which for a hobbyist with a limited and highly fragmented time for his musical endeavors is a
must have feature. Despite enjoying analog gear a lot I use it mostly for inspiration and get most of my music

Both of these have a sense of control which i prefer, from the analog feel of developing sounds with a more
organic feel and within a more physical realm and then again with digital where you have more possibilities of
manipulation without hardware

There is a realistic quality to analog instrumentation, and often the timbre and quality of the analog can not be
reproduced through digital means alone. Digital production however allows for more experimentation and
improvisation within a track

I say digital because, as a high school senior going on to college without a job, music production hardware is
wayyy too expensive at the moment. I do have a Launchkey 49, but that's it, really. I'm going to assume that
doesn't count as analog (if it does, consider me a hybrid producer). But once I get the chance, I'd be more than
happy to buy myself an audio interface/mixer, more MIDI controllers (Launchpad Pro, Behringer BCR-2000,
Ableton Push, yes please), some hardware synths, and maybe a fully modular synthesizer system.

Analog for it's tone shaping abilities and digital for it's sheer power and unlimited capabilities in editing. Hence
why I go hybrid, although I prefer analog synths always (if I can get my hands on one).

Analog is nice but digital is so much more functional and practical, for example It doesn't require much extra
hardware usually.
4/7/2015 3:49 PM
935
I prefer both. Analog because it's way more in depth to have the hardware in front of you, as a physical object.
And digital, because hardware is just too damn expensive, and sometimes, the software does exactly what you
need it to do.
4/7/2015 3:48 PM
936
Analog recording is much more complicated and has higher costs. The hardware synths also don't have as much
control as their software equivalents.

I prefer Analog as it is real ans not a representative of the signal. An analogy would be, which is preferable,
looking at a Van Gogh Painting or looking at a photograph of a Van Gogh Painting. Software sounds very 2
dimensional and tame, hardware analog does not have those restrictions.

I prefer the warm sound provided by analog instruments and the creative boundaries that they put me in. These

thereby become guidelines for my creativity. Digital because the possibilities are endless
