Libraries are facing an explosion of content

and dramatic changes in the way that library
patrons discover and interact with electronic
resources. Simultaneously, libraries are under
pressure to defend budgets as institutions
look to reduce costs. In this environment, the
librarians ability to rapidly sift through vast
pools of information to make choices for
their patrons about the value and relevance
of content is an ever more valuable service.
Libraries are increasingly turning to eBooks
to help meet these challenges and Springers
own research data confirms this trend.
While overall digital downloads were up
24% in 2009, eBook chapter downloads were
up 36%. In fact, eBooks usage more than
doubled between 2007 and 2009. Within
eBooks, the top 20% titles account for just
53% of usage, a fact that underscores the
effectiveness of the collection model for
Libraries, with patrons accessing backlist
titles nearly as often as more current titles.

Usage up 36% to 56 million eBooks chapter downloads in 2009!

Springer eBooks deliver the critical content

Discoverable, Searchable,
Integrated and Flexible
Springers eBook Collection delivers the
same high quality production and artwork
found in Springer print book publications,
together with all the added benefits of an
online environment, including exceptional
search capabilities and deep linking.
As the availability of digital content continues
to impact research techniques, individual
electronic resources are rarely utilized in
isolation; they are frequently used as a step
a research chain that deliver the desired
results. The long tail approach to discovery
has increasingly become a model for
research; through SpringerLink, researchers
will have access to millions of searchable
pages, integrated into the library catalogue
and seamlessly connected to Springer
Journals, creating an unmatched online
reference network.
Springer eBooks are easily discovered and
accessed. Library patrons have more and
more resources at their disposal, but often
lack the tools to locate very specific areas of
information. With the increased availability
of digital content, the ability to locate
information in trusted resources is critical.
All Springer content is easily found from
the widest selection of discovery points.
Springer books are indexed by Google and
fully integrated with all major Link Resolvers,
including Summon and SFX.
