Project Description
You are to perform a project in OFF510 Operations and maintenance management. The
context of the project is the development of offshore oil and gas platform. Lundin Norway AS
is operator of their first platform for Edvard Grieg Oil and Gas (O&G) field. The Edvard Grieg
field consists of a platform resting on the seabed (steel jacket), with a full process facility, dry
wellheads with external jack-up drilling and living quarters. The platform will start
production in 4th quarter of 2015.
The focus for the project is to analyze Edvard Grieg O&G production facilities with respect
operations and maintenance management needs. You should use the platform as a context
and through examples in your answers.
You may use different examples throughout the project. It is recommended that you choose
to analyze part of the installation/ system/ sub-system you and your partners have
knowledge about and feel comfortable with. It is important that whatever system/sub-system
one group selects, all tasks must be addressed (Ref. Section 2).
You may also use methodologies/guidelines available in applicable standards as necessary.
The focus should be applying and demonstrating the concepts and methodologies taught in
the class lectures and course compendium.

Tasks
1. Briefly describe the production facilities development and focus on the functional
needs and the future operations and maintenance management of these
assets in the various life cycle phases.
2. Identify and discuss briefly many challenges the company will face in the
operations and maintenance management of the asset. Try to think in a broad
prospective, for example project management, design out/ design for maintenance, HSE,
LCC, etc. It may be helpful to study challenges in various life cycle phases such as
concept, design, construction, installation, commissioning, operations and maintenance,
as well as the recycling phase.
3. Among the challenges identified in task 2, rank the top 5 most critical
operations and maintenance challenges. Discuss why these challenges are
considered to be critical. Think in a broad perspective, e.g. project management, design
out/ for maintenance, failures, performance, HSE, LCC, etc.
4. Discuss various alternative solutions to overcome the top 5 challenges.
5. Select some technical system components and analyze their failure modes effects
and criticality, failure causes, and failure consequences. Outline possible
alternatives for eliminating/ reducing/ mitigating the risks.
6. Discuss how to use a LCC analysis to compare selection of components/
equipment/ machines/ systems from different suppliers. Identify the major
costs and potential loss factors and suggest which factors to include in the LCC analysis
and discuss how you would assess the uncertainty in the numbers and in the results. Also
consult the NORSOK standard O-CR-002 Life cycle cost for production facility (Rev. 1,
April 1996)
7. Discuss how you will manage spare parts logistics and inventory. What are the
issues involved in deciding which parts to buy, how to store the parts, where to store
them, etc.? Consult NORSOK Z-008 Rev.3 for guidelines.
8. Discuss the usage and management of data and information in an operations and
maintenance management perspective. What kind of technology would you
recommend implemented for the information and communication management? Why?
3. Based on the discussion above, establish the main O&M goal(s) and discuss how you
will set up a structured maintenance management program to achieve your
goals and for improving your maintenance activities.
10. Write half a page (max.) about how the group work was conducted and how
the group partners were cooperating. What tasks did the individual participants
perform (mention the names) and how were the tasks discussed with the other
participants to reach a consensus. What problems were encountered? How do you assess
that all partners contributed equal to the project report?

Deliverables
PROJECT REPORT
Due date: Monday, April 20th, 2015. No project reports will be accepted after this
date. You are encouraged to deliver the project report before the deadline.
REPORT FORMAT AND LENGTH
The project report should be maximum 6000 words (excluding front page, contents page,
tables, figures, references and appendices).
The report can be written in English or Norwegian language.
Hand in the project report in PDF format using Its Learning within the deadline.
The file name should contain the last names of the group members.
The front page should contain the course title, date and student names.
Use each given question as section headings (Ref. Section 2).
GROUP WORK
The work should be performed in groups of two, three or maximum five
students per group. Individual reports will only be accepted in exceptional cases. You
are responsible for finding group partner(s).
The project will be graded on the basis of the project report. We will not differentiate
between reports conducted by individuals, or by groups of 2, 3 or 4 persons.
All the participants in a group will be given the same grade unless there is a good reason to
not do so.
The report should be as a group effort and all participants should contribute equally.
Failure to do so should result in a lower grade.
Focus on demonstrating your knowledge from an operations and
maintenance management perspective. Show that you have understood the
content of the course, the analysis techniques and methodology, etc.
Project advice
Beside the usage of the class materials such as the compendium, lecture notes and classroom
teaching, etc., you are encouraged to make use of various other sources such as the library
and research papers found in the online databases. Many of these resources may be accessed
remotely. Ask the library how to do this. See also: www.uis.no/library/remote-access/.
Also pay attention to the following issues:
Address the problems directly, and make sure that your answers are concise,
clear, correct and complete.
Where necessary, use clear statement/arguments to put limitation to your work.
Pay serious attention to the logic of your argumentation. Be methodical in the use
of facts and arguments so that you can structure your answers systematically.
