A. Research Topic
This study will aim to have a modified and simplified module for Science intended
for Grade 8 students which contain laboratory activities where in materials are feasible
at school and even at home. In addition, this study promotes students engagement in
what they are learning and therefore by engaging themselves to what they are doing
retention and understanding of contents is high, students attitude will be improved,
increases students attention span and time on task, and skills such as critical thinking,
communicating, reading and writing will also be improved. This study then aims to aid
the problems of science teachers in procuring laboratory materials in order for students
to be in lined with the learning by doing principle in teaching Science concepts.

B. Research Problem
How can this module help to improve the performance of the students during
laboratory activities in understanding Science concepts?

C. Initial Theoretical Framework

Laboratory work is the hallmark of education in science and technology based
fields. In the laboratory students can explore their understanding of the subjects being
taught by placing their learning in context. Students can also be motivated to learn in

the laboratory context if they can feel a spirit of excitement when investigating a
scientific phenomenon, or when creating something that actually works. Many of us can
remember an occasion where a laboratory class was particularly memorable or
enlightening. The design and delivery of laboratory classes and the forms of student
assessment used, need to be examined critically for their contribution to effective
student learning. As a science teacher, the following are the things to be leaned during
laboratory exercises:
1. Learning scientific information and concepts
2. Participating in the construction of scientific knowledge, understanding the
interplay of theory and methodology
3. Understanding the processes of scientific enquiry and appreciating and
emulating the role of scientists and engineers in enquiry:
o observing and measuring
o seeing a problem and seeking ways to solve it
o interpreting data and formulating generalizations
o building, testing, and revising a theoretical model
4. Developing imagination and creativity
5. Learning manipulative and technical skills and the use of equipment

6. Developing relevant professional values, attitudes, and interests

7. Developing an orientation to the social, historical, and philosophical aspects of
science and engineering
8. Appreciating the application of knowledge and methods
9. Developing literature skills
10. Learning how to communicate verbally and orally
11. Learning to work cooperatively with colleagues, developing teamwork
12. Developing scientific attitudes
Hence, it is very important not to miss any laboratory activity due to lack of materials.

The first move to be made in this study is to gather laboratory activities suited for
grade 8 in the K-12 curriculum. Next is to have these activities evaluated by the expert
thesis adviser and panel members of the study with masters or Ph. D.s in line with
Science.

There will be collaboration with the adviser, panel members, and the

researcher to simplify laboratory activities most especially in finding alternatives with

some materials that are not available in school or at home. After this, the module will
now be compiled for final examination in order to be implemented for the intended
recipients of the study. The module will now be ready for testing and right after testing
all the laboratory activities, the students will be given with questionnaire to be answered.

The essence of the questionnaire is to find out if the module helps the students in
improving their laboratory performance.

D. Description of data
The data of this study will be gathered from the Grade 8 students as they will be
given questionnaire in line with as to how the laboratory exercises help to improve their
performance and understanding in Science concepts.
After data is being gathered, this will be interpreted with the aid of statistics.

Research Outcome
This study will be of great help for science teacher in the procurement of
materials that will be used during laboratory activities because all the activities are
modified in such a way that materials are feasible at school and even at home. On the
other hand, since laboratory activities are simplified the students will not be able to have
a hard time in understanding the activities plus students are in lined with the principle
learning by doing.
