Veterans come first at Last Mans Dinner

75th annual American Legion Post 38 event honors those who have served and are currently serving
By BRIGIT BAUMA
The Sun
It has been 75 years since Haddonfield American Legion Post 38
hosted its first Last Mans Dinner.
Since its beginning, the purpose
and meaning of the dinner have
not changed. Veterans, families
and friends come together to celebrate and honor those who have
served and are currently serving.
As commander, I think it is important to educate everyone
about the importance of this dinner. We are honoring all veterans:
those living, those deceased and
those currently serving on active
duty, Post 38 Commander Jon
Batchelor said.
The dinner was held at the
Tavistock Country Club on Monday, April 6. At the 75th Annual
Last Mans Dinner, Batchelor emceed the proceedings, which included military honors, a special

who have passed in the last year
and performances by the "The

The Last Man's Club of Haddonfield American Legion Post 38
was chartered in 1940 by World
War I veterans and was later expanded to include World War II,

and the Gulf War veterans. Post
38s Last Mans Club is the only
Last Mans Club in New Jersey,
according to Al Peak, former
Camden County American Legion commander and WWII veter-

an.
The Last Man's Club was organized to preserve the memories
of American wars, to pay fitting
tribute to departed comrades, to
foster and perpetuate good fellowship, and to eat, drink and be

merry. Every member of Post 38

is a member of the Last Man's
Club.
The 2015 Last Man Chapter
club officers who presented that
night were Peak for WWII, Joe
Ade for the Korean War, Bill
Olver of the Vietnam War and
Steve Pecorelli of the Gulf Wars.
Each man gave an update on his
wars charter.
This past year, nine members
of Post 38 passed. They were
Joseph E. Blizzard, William T.
Campbell, John Cordner, Charles
J. Kasse, Marie M. Leonard,
Robert M. Shapleigh Sr. and Raymond F. Wallin of WWII, and
David W. Diehl and Edward W.
North of the Korean War.
Our thoughts and prayers go
out to them and their families,
Peak said.
It was announced that Haddonfield has 30 Blue Star members,
who are individuals serving in active duty. Those members include:

Since 1931, the Haddonfield

Civic Association has recognized
individuals or organizations that
have made a lasting, positive impact on the town in a volunteer
capacity. Each year, the HCA presents the Alfred E. Driscoll Award
honoring the late Gov. Driscoll, a
distinguished citizen of Haddonfield. The award acknowledges an
uncommon effort made on behalf
of the community, with the intention that those who receive it will
inspire others, and that it will encourage broader participation in
civic activities in the Haddonfield
community. This year, Maureen
Lynn Eyles was chosen as the
2015 recipient of the award. Eyles
will be presented the award at the

Public meeting on April 22

to address Bancroft proposal
This information was provided
by Commissioner Neal Rochford:
A public meeting has been
scheduled by developer Brian
O'Neill to discuss the proposal to
build an alcohol and substance
abuse clinic on the Bancroft property. The date is Wednesday, April
22 at the high school auditorium
at 7 p.m. The high school was chosen since it can hold a larger capacity then other venues in the
borough. This meeting as I understand it will have a presentation
and time to answer questions

from residents about the proposed facility.

As of today, no plan for the site
has been presented to the borough nor has there been any
scheduled hearings by the zoning
board. This is a public meeting
scheduled by the developer. It is
not a commissioner meeting. The
commissioners will not be speaking or be participating at the
meeting.
Residents are welcome to the
commissioner regularly scheduled meeting for public comment.

The Sun
Despite all the advances the
world has made the past few
years, there are still many people
and countries that are facing difficulties in 2015. One of those
problems is world hunger. According to the United Nations
World Food Programme, there
are 805 million undernourished
people in the world today, meaning one in nine people do not get
enough food to be healthy and live
active lives.
This weekend, Haddonfield is
doing its part to help in the fight
against hunger, and there is still
time to get involved.
Feed My Starving Children returns to Haddonfield on Friday,
April 17 and Saturday, April 18.
Hosted by the First Presbyterian
Church, 1,000 volunteers split
into five two-hour sessions will
come to Haddonfield Middle
School gym to hand pack 225,000
meals. This includes packing vitamins, dehydrated veggies, soy
and rice into six-serving packages, sealing them, boxing them
and preparing them for shipping
to one of 70 developing nations.
I really love this program. I
just love seeing the whole community come together and working together for something that is
greater than ourselves. We bring
our best selves to the moment. In
those two hours, I think people
are filled with the most generous
spirit possible, said Gerry Rice,
one of the organizers of the
FMSC event. And I think it is
also humbling because we realize
how much we have, how easy it is
to share and how great it feels to
do something for people who have
so much less.
The First Presbyterian Church
of Haddonfield started Haddonfields FMSC three years ago,
wanting to start a project that involved the whole church. They decided on FMSC, which is a non-

in our opinion

Christies tax cap is working

But now its time to move to the next phase reducing property taxes

108 Kings Highway East

Haddonfield, NJ 08033
856-427-0933
Dan McDonough Jr.
chairman of elauwit media

ive years ago, back in 2010, Gov.

Christie won a political battle,
enacting a 2 percent cap on municipal tax levies. The law limited
property-taxing budget increases to a
maximum of 2 percent with some exceptions down from 4 percent, lest
they be subject to public vote.
While some argued at the time
whether the cap would work, or
whether it was another political ploy,
the data says it has had a positive effect.
Since the cap was enacted, property
taxes rose 2.4 percent on average in
2011, 1.6 percent in 2012, 1.3 percent in
2013 and 2.2 percent in 2014. From 2004
to 2006, property taxes increased at
least 7 percent each year.
Thats data we can stand behind, but
now, five years after the caps enaction,
more needs to be done. Its not simply
good enough that property tax increases have leveled off; we need to find a

way to reduce the property tax burden

on our residents.
While the increase last year was
only 2.2 percent, New Jerseys average
property tax bill rose to the highest its
ever been to $8,161 on average, according to Department of Community
Affairs data. The average property taxpayer paid an additional $173 in property taxes last year, up from an average
total of $7,988 in 2013.
Heres some more ugly data...
Only 0.2 percent of homeowners in
the U.S. paid more than $8,000 last year
in property taxes which is lower
than our state average.
New Jersey collects $3,000 per capi-

ta in property taxes. Seventy-nine percent of American homeowners paid

less than $1,750 last year, and only 3
percent paid more than $4,000.
Christies property-tax cap was
never going to fix the problem of New
Jerseys high property taxes; it wasnt
designed to do so. It has helped keep
local taxing entities in check, but thats
only a start.
Step 2 of property tax reform should
be initiatives to lower property taxes.
Some of these are in place, such as incentives to bring new business to the
states barren wastelands such as
Trenton and Camden.
But that is not enough. We need to
bring more business and more jobs to
this state, more ratables for our towns
and school districts to offset the taxes
these entities need to operate. Taxes
arent going up too much, and thats
good, but now they need to start going
down.

Behavior of some event
attendees disappointing

no one, least of all themselves.

Im sure alcohol was involved, but
maybe the next time these groups
of gentlemen get together, they
might better do it at the ballpark
where loudness and rude behavior are more acceptable.
One gentleman also shouted at
people to stand up when Going
Home was played, since prior to
the song being played, the room
was asked to take their seats. The
request should have come from
the podium, not this individual. I
thought that this was an odd request coming from him, since all
night he could have spoken/
shouted to his fellow table guests
to be quiet during the program.
Why all of a sudden, was he so
concerned about people showing
respect? It might be better for
these individuals to just make a
donation to the American Legion
Post, and let people who are there
to honor our past and present
service men enjoy the evening.
Linda Brees

I recently attended the Last

Mans Dinner, put on by the Haddonfield American Legion Post
38, for the first time. The people
attending the program go to show
respect for those who have served
or are serving in the Armed
Forces. They also pay respect for
those members who have died
since the last dinner. My father
was a Marine who served in the
South Pacific in World War II. I
also lost two of my cousins to the
Vietnam War in the 1960s.
I am writing this letter to address the behavior of some of the
people who attended the event.
There were several tables of men
that were rude and inconsiderate
to the program. They talked loudly when there were speakers, and
showed little respect. Im sure my
4-year-old grandson would have
behaved better than they did. The
way that they behaved honored

profit Christian organization
committed to feeding Gods chil-

dren in body and spirit.

According to the FMSC website, FMSC is a four-star charity,
ranking higher than 99 percent of
all charities for trustworthiness
and integrity. Ninety-two percent
of every dollar is used toward the

food; the other 8 percent is used

for administrative costs. Also,
99.6 percent of all food is received
by the organizations that it is intended for. This means there is a
0.4 percent chance that it hasnt,
either by being lost, spilled or
other reasons.
That means that it is a really,
really clean and trustworthy organization, so that makes us really proud to work with them, Rice
said.
First Presbyterian Churchs
FMSC has evolved to include not
just the church, but many companies, organizations and people
from around the area. Those getting involved include eight other
churches, synagogues, Boy Scouts,
Girl Scouts, the Rotary Club, the
Lions Club, the Ys Men, Holman
Ford, UPS, Wells Fargo, Bank of
America, Archer & Greiner and
Lenny, Vermaat & Leonard Realtors, just to name a few.
People want to do this, so it is

really great to see them get involved, Rice said.

Each two-hour session is full of
fast, noisy fun. There is a job for
everyone 5-years-old and up, both
standing, sitting and running
around jobs. Rice described it as a
festival, and seeing everyone
working together is one of her favorite parts.
Its loud, fun and fast. We have
people carrying boxes and starting contests. Its a blast; its really
a fun two hours, and you feel like
you did something that really
matters, Rice said. We are literally saving lives. If the children of
these countries dont get the vitamins and minerals they need,
they will not grow. Their brains
will not develop like they should.
If interested in getting involved, register yourself, your
family or a group. There are 1,000
spots to fill, which might seem
like a lot, but they can fill quickly.
Contact
Rice
at

gerviola@mac.com or (856) 2541718.

If you cant attend on April 17
and 18, you can still help by supporting FMSC with a financial
contribution. Each meal costs
$0.22. Each person who packs
meals will pack about $50 worth
of meals. All ingredients are paid
for by the church, with a total bill
of $50,000. Checks can be made to
First Presbyterian, 20 Kings
Highway East, Haddonfield, and
please put FMSC in the memo
line. Credit cards can be used on
the website at www.haddonfieldpres.org/fmsc.
I hope people will be moved to
find other ways to give their time
and talent. I want them to get involved and help us grow, Rice
said.

Pop-up Parklet part of Earth Day fun

As Earth Day approaches, Haddonfield officials are looking to do
something new and unusual on
their main street. That something
is called a Parklet, or mini-park
created within the street environs
or parking zone where it becomes
an extension of the sidewalk.
Parklets are popping up in
many cities and towns to create
small green spaces on busy
streets for pedestrians to gather,
socialize, enjoy a meal or just sit
and relax. Some parklets are
semi-permanent designs with
fixed walls, seats and planters
while others are intended for special events in the town, like festivals and celebrations. Haddonfields parklet will be created near
Kings Court and the pedestrian
crossing. In this way, it will be
close to Earth Day exhibits and
activities in Kings Court.
Although International Earth
Day is officially observed on April
22, Haddonfield will celebrate its
event on Saturday, April 25.

The parklet will be constructed

with volunteer labor and materials donated by Knolltop Nursery.
The design was developed by
Brad Dipadova. Members of Sustainable Haddonfield, the Environmental Commission and the
local school students are invited
to pitch in on Friday to set everything up. Knolltops design calls
for use of recycled shipping pallets to create a green boundary
between traffic and the parklet.
Benches, planters, mulch and sod
will be arranged in the space to
create this temporary green
haven on the busy street. While
borough officials understand that
parking is vital to downtown
businesses, a new balance can be
found to create new civic and
green spaces for residents and
visitors to enjoy. This temporary
parklet will test public opinions
about how to best balance the
changing needs of people while
reducing public space dedicated
to automobiles. This pop-up ex-

periment fits very nicely with the

Green Building and Sustainability element being developed for
the Boroughs Master Plan.
More information can be found
on the boroughs website as well
as at Sustainablehaddonfield.

I was very surprised. Over the

years, 84 individuals have been
honored with the award, and they
are such an incredible list of people who have improved others
daily life. I cant even express how
honored I am. There are so many
people in the community who
give back; I was just really surprised, Eyles said.
Eyles was born and raised in
Haddonfield, her family having
lived in the area for generations.
Eyles went away for a bit, but she
and her husband Jim wanted to
move back to Haddonfield and
raise their family in the closeknit, big-hearted community.
They did so in 2000, now with
their sons Matt and Jack.
This is a very special place.
Jim and I both realized that.
When we wanted to settle down
and have kids, there wasnt a
choice; we had to live here. Growing up, I was influenced by watching the good deeds of others in
Haddonfield. Any opportunity for
our kids to participate in that,
seeing that this is special to know
our neighbors and check in with
each other, and knowing that
their actions can make a difference, is important, Eyles said.
Eyles has actively volunteered

and civic organizations for more

than 20 years. Over the years, she
has enjoyed giving her time to
dozens of borough committees,
events and organizations, as a
board member, organizer and volunteer.
I cant help myself. Im a sucker for a sign-up sheet. Volunteering is an outlet for me. And
through volunteering, I have met
many great people along the way.
Serving together is a great shortcut to friendship, Eyles said.
There is just such a culture of
giving here, I wanted to be a part
of that. Growing up watching
other volunteers, Ive been inspired by their actions.
Eyles is developing The
Link, a collaborative database
and communications program
linking the Haddonfield Educational Trust and Haddonfield
Foundation. Though still in the
preliminary stages, the plan is to
create a database of residents,
former residents and alumni to
whom The Link will send a
newsletter with different events
spotlighted on an every-othermonth schedule.
She is also coach and advisor of
the Odyssey of the Mind program
at Central School. This year,
Eyles teams made it to the tournament, which was held at Haddonfield Memorial High School
on April 11. According to Eyles, it
is amazing to see what those children can accomplish in seven

minutes with the different tasks

they are given.
Other organizations to which
she has given her time and energy include: The Cure Colins Cancer Block Party, a grassroots effort to raise more than $30,000 for
a local family fighting cancer;
The Chicken Runs at Midnight,
the Canuso Foundations Annual
town event to benefit families afflicted by cancer; board member
and Ways & Means chairperson
of The Junior Womens Club of
the Haddon Fortnightly (2004 2009); and member of the Haddonfield Board of Education
since 2012.
One of my favorite events is
the Chicken Runs At Midnight,
which is on May 1 this year. I love
it because not only does it support
local families that are battling serious illnesses, but also it helps to
get the children involved. It is important to help the children get
engaged and learn to give back,
Eyles said.
Eyles has been involved in educational organizations ranging
from
Haddonfield
United
Methodist Nursery School, Central School PTA member and
committee chairperson (20072015), as well as running her
HMHS class reunions.
Professionally, Eyles specializes in event planning and sponsorship sales, and was hired by
the Haddonfield Cultural Events
Commission to serve as the executive director of First Night Haddonfield 2011-2013 and the 300th
Anniversary of the Settlement of
Haddonfield in 2013.
The community is welcome to
attend the HCAs Annual Meeting
and Town Hall on April 23 at Tavistock Country Club. In addition to
honoring Eyles as the Driscoll
Award winner, the HCA will also
recognize the Bradshaw Essay
Contest Winners and the Kaufmann Award Performing Arts Recipient from Haddonfield Memorial High School. The evening
will begin with a reception at 6
p.m. and dinner will commence at
7 p.m. Tickets cost $45 each and
