2014 Len Stevens Scholarship

Information
About Professor Len Stevens

Emeritus Professor Leonard Stevens AM has been involved with the Melbourne School of Engineering for over
60 years. He completed his Bachelor of Civil Engineering in 1950 and Master of Engineering in 1954. He was
fortunate to complete his PhD in 1955 at Cambridge University after securing a scholarship. Professor Stevens
went on to serve as Dean of Engineering from 1979 to 1988.
Len Stevens has been involved in some of Australias most important building projects. For example, he was the
Engineer assessor for the New Parliament House design competition as well as a design consultant for the
construction of the New Parliament House. He was also involved in other important building projects such as
the Arts Centre in Melbourne and the Australian Academy of Sciences Shine Dome.
After serving as a flying officer in the Pacific during World War II, Professor Stevens arrived at the Melbourne
School of Engineering during a boom in student numbers. He was fortunate to have been given the opportunity
to study engineering thanks to a government reconstruction training scheme for those who had served in the
war.
It is for this reason that throughout his academic life, Professor Stevens has championed the creation of
scholarship opportunities, through initiatives such at the Melbourne School of Engineering Foundation, which
was established in 1982 under his leadership as Dean.
He was awarded a Member of the Order of Australia in 2005 for outstanding contribution to the field of
engineering, and to education, Len Stevens continues to teach Engineering students as Emeritus Professor at
the Melbourne School of Engineering.

Engineering launched an Appeal to establish the Len Stevens Scholarship during the celebrations of 150 years
of engineering education at the University of Melbourne in 2011. With the generous support of the Schools
community of donors and the Melbourne School of Engineering Foundation, the Appeal successfully concluded
