The final installment in the Rossland Council for Arts
and Culture 2014/15 Performance Series is a new and
exciting form of theatre for Rossland! Wonderheads:
Grim and Fischer, a masked theatre production, will be
performed Saturday, April 25 at the Rossland Miners Hall.
Wonderheads is a multi-award winning physical theatre
company specializing in exquisite visual storytelling. They
present a whimsical performance with rich soundscapes,
fantastic puppetry, and timeless slapstick performance.
They work in full-face mask, a rare form of theatre, and
love nothing more than mashing comedy, beauty, irreverence, and pathos together to create an utterly unique
show, recommended for ages 10 and up.
Grim and Fischer has been called utter magic by CBC.
In this dance macabre the Grim Reaper meets his match
in Mrs. Fischer, a stubborn senior whose will to live is
a force to be reckoned with. Equal parts hilarious and
touching, this award winning physical comedy is the
story of a tenacious granny who comes face to face with
the Grim Reaper himself and must put up the fight of her
life to escape his definitive grip.
Grim and Fischer is performed in full-face mask, a form
so magical you will forget your age and marvel in childlike
delight. Wordless and whimsical, it has been described
by audiences as watching a living cartoon, or live-action
Pixar. The show has been touring the continent since 2009
and leaving sold out houses and delighted audiences in its

Pennywise
The Waneta Expansion Limited Partnership (WELP),

a partnership between Fortis Inc., Columbia Power Corporation and Columbia Basin Trust, announces that the
Waneta Expansion Project near Trail is now online and
generating power.
The $900 million 335 MW expansion adds a second
powerhouse, immediately downstream of the Waneta
Dam on the Pend dOreille River, that shares the existing
hydraulic head and generates clean, renewable, cost effective power from water that would otherwise be spilled.
The project included construction of a 10 km, 230 kV
transmission line and provides enough energy to power
about 60,000 homes per year. Long-term agreements are
in place with BC Hydro to purchase the energy and FortisBC to purchase the capacity from the project. Project
benefits include the injection of over $300 million into the
local economy through the purchase of goods and services and wages. Employment reached over 1,400 people.
The eighth largest infrastructure project in British
Columbia, the Waneta Expansion Project was completed
six weeks ahead of schedule and on budget while maintaining an excellent safety and environmental protection
record. This project is a testament to the can-do attitude
of British Columbians, said John Walker, Executive Vice
President, Western Canadian Operations, Fortis Inc.
The Waneta Expansion Project not only benefits our
province by providing clean, reliable power, but its also
helping local businesses thrive, said Bill Bennett, Minister
of Energy, Mines and Responsible for Core Review. This
is a perfect example of a project that is committed to a high
standard of quality, safety and environmental protection
while delivering positive benefits to the local community.

Western Front: British Columbia
And The Great War
Author and broadcaster Mark Forsythe and journalist

Greg Dickson will be giving a presentation about their
most recent book, From the West Coast to the Western
Front: British Columbians and the Great War (Harbour
Publishing). Come down to the Castlegar & District Public Library, 1005 3rd Street on Friday, April 17 at 7 pm.
It has often been observed that the first world war jolted
Canada into nationhood, and as Mark Forsythe and Greg
Dickson show in this compelling book, no province participated more eagerly in that transformation or felt the
aftershock more harshly than British Columbia. In From
the West Coast to the Western Front, Forsythe, host of
CBC Radios mid-day show BC Almanac, marks the 100th
anniversary of World War I by teaming with historian
Greg Dickson and the ever resourceful BC Almanac audience to compile a sweeping portrayal of that crucial chapter of BC history.
Of the 611,000 Canadians who fought for King and
Country, 55,570 were from British Columbia the highest
per capita rate of enlistment in the country. Of that contingent, 6,225 died in battle, a critical loss to a fledgling
province of barely 400,000.
Compiling stories, artifacts and photos sent in by BC
Almanac listeners from across the province, this volume tells of submarine smuggling, bagpipes lost on the
battlefield and of the ongoing struggles by soldiers who
made it home. It tells of battles that set records for mass
death amid conditions of unequalled squalor, but also of
the heroism of front-line nurses and soldiers like George
Maclean, a First Nations man from the Okanagan, who
won the Distinguished Conduct Medal.
By turns devastating, harrowing, insightful and miraculous, these stories reveal much about the spirit and resilience of a people who survived one of historys greatest
disasters to build the province we have today.
Mark Forsythe was the long-standing host of CBC Radio
Ones BC Almanac. Raised in Toronto, Forsythe moved to
BC in the mid-seventies and has come to know the province
well through broadcasting assignments in Smithers, Prince
George, Prince Rupert, the Okanagan and Vancouver.
Greg Dickson was a journalist and producer at CBC
radio and television for over 20 years. He also taught journalism at the British Columbia Institute of Technology.
This free event is made possible with the assistance of the

Victorian Hospital Of Kaslo Bursary

The Victorian Hospital of Kaslo Auxiliary Society wishes
to offer a $1500 bursary. Applications may be submitted by
not only a graduating student from JV Humphries School,
but by any citizen of Kaslo upon presentation of proof of
accepted enrollment at an accredited Canadian College/
University in a health-care related field. This means a graduating student, a former graduate or anyone in the community, has an opportunity to apply for this bursary. This
one bursary a year has been made available for many years
by the auxiliary. The bursary application form is available
at the JV Humphries school office. Deadline is Friday, May

15. Applications MUST be hand written letter form.
The Victorian Hospital of Kaslo Auxiliary Society is active

Kaslo Health Care Centre residents as well as equipment
and furnishings that the facility would otherwise have to do
without. The Hospital Auxiliary has continuously served the
Kaslo area for one hundred and nine years.

Caf Langham
Kootenay Archaeology
Kootenay Archaeology is the Langhams second talk in
our 2015 series. Discussion at Caf Langham will range
from modern and local applications of archaeology, with the
examination of the Kaslo Bay boat launch project/process
to our regions fascinating pre-contact history. Ian Tamasi
(BSc, RPCA) has been working in the field of archaeology in
the East and West Kootenays since 2003, involved with cultural resource management in the forestry, hydro-electric,
mining and residential sectors. Employed by Tipi Mountain
Eco-Services since the incorporation of the company in
2011, he manages day to day operations and fieldwork.
Tamasi has been involved in a variety of academic projects including: a Paleo-Indian to middle period site at
Lake Minnewanka (Banff ), a middle-to-late period bison
pound site in Fish Creek Provincial Park (Calgary), various oil sands development and large scale excavations in
the Little Bow Reservoir basin (S. Alberta). Besides fieldwork, Ian has a keen interest in Public Archaeology, educating youth (of all ages) about the regions fascinating
12,000 year pre-contact history.

Society in Kaslo. Donation at the door, and youth are free!
Mr. Tamasi will also be involved in the Langhams
Columbia Basin Youth Program, Archaeology Outreach.
He will work with youth (grades 6/7 and 11/12) in the
North Kootenay Lake area and in Castlegar, exploring
the past 12,000 years of human occupation in the region,

New Look At The Kaslo Thrift Store
This winter many members of the Hospital Auxiliary

Society have worked hard to improve the Thrift Store. Its
brighter and cleaner, and its easier to find what you want.
Our prices are the same and we still aim to reduce waste,
recycle and re-use. Now spring is here, we hope to return
to our summer hours of being open 3 days a week. But we
need more volunteers.
So what does volunteering at the store entail? If you like
meeting the public and can spare three hours a week, or
every other week, we would be happy to show you how
to work at the front of the store. If you could spare only
two hours a week, or every other week, we need people to
come in on Mondays to sort donations, or keep the store
tidy and attractive. Either job is a lot of fun, with a very
friendly group of people. Shifts are flexible, so you would
not be committed to a fixed day at the store if you are out
of town. All our profits go to support the health and wellbeing of our community.

Breaking Boards Breaking Chains
Did you know that there are more slaves today than ever
before in human history? An estimated 36 million men,
women and children are held as modern-day slaves in the
world today.
Master Dean Siminoff and the students of Kootenay
Christian Martian Arts School here in Nelson are participating in their third annual Breaking Boards Breaking Chains event to raise awareness and financial support
to help free modern-day slaves. The school asks that you
join them on Saturday, April 18 from 1:30 5:30 pm at
the Nelson Civic Theatre in their demonstration and
stand against oppression. There will be a brief video about
the work of International Justice Mission, an organization that investigates, rescues and rehabilitates victims of
oppression as well as prosecutes the criminals who have
broken the laws that are in place to protect the poor.
This will be followed by a fantastic breaking demonstration by the students and instructors from the school. We will
end the night with a screening of Karate Kid (2010) by donation. All ages are welcome and all proceeds will be donated
to IJM and their fight for justice. Please join us and support
the Champions of Freedom and Justice in our community.

On Friday, May 1 student entrepreneurs from throughout the West Kootenay-Boundary will have a chance to
take flight with Pacific Coastal Airlines. These Junior
Dragons will pitch their business ideas to a panel of judges
(aka. The Dragons) in front of a live audience at the
Charles Bailey theatre, and with over $9000 in cash and
prizes up for grabs (including a chance to win a flight with
Pacific Coastal for both competitors and members of the
audience), this is one show not to be missed!
Modelled after CBCs The Dragons Den, where qualifying entrepreneurs pitch their business idea to a group of
potential investors, students from Grades 8 - College had
until March 14 to submit a business concept paper and a
brief 1.5 - 2 minute video elevator pitch, for a chance to
get into the competition. Entrants were then short-listed
to compete in the live show and matched with a mentor
from the local business community to refine their business plan and their pitch. Concepts were evaluated based
on finances, marketability, the product or service idea and
the overall plan presented.
Were really excited to be part of this years show
stated Spencer Smith, V.P. Commercial Services for Pacific
Coastal Airlines. We applaud the effort and initiative of
all of these student entrepreneurs and know first hand
just what it takes to go from business concept to business
launch and beyond, stated Smith.
The competition culminates with the top five from
each category pitching their business ideas complete with
video Friday May 1 at Charles Bailey Theatre, 1501 Cedar

Samson
Samson came into the Trail BCSPCA Feb 25 2015 as a
stray and no one came in to claim him. Samson is a
dazzling, 5 year old, long haired seal point Siamese
neutered male. The staff can tell you that Samson
is curious, sweet, and quiet. Now that Sampson is
neutered he does very well in the cat communal room,
and gets along with other cats. With Samsons long hair
he will need regular brushing as he was matted when
he came to the shelter. The staff have been brushing
him and he likes it if you go slow. If you are interested

Rusty Wants To Adopt

Rossland, Forever!
Rusty the Horse has been earning his oats in downtown Rossland for the past year. As a favourite backdrop
for photos, Rusty has brought many smiles to the faces
of locals and visitors alike. But Rossland isnt Rustys forever home and the Rossland Council for Arts and Culture
hopes to change that. Along with a group of local supporters RCAC are spearheading a fundraising initiative
to purchase Rusty and let him live out his days as part of
Columbia Avenues public sculptures.
RCAC brought Rusty to Rossland last year as part of the
Regional Sculpturewalk Program coordinated by Castlegar Sculpturewalk. Through the regional program, communities and businesses can lease a sculpture for a year.
With our history of horse racing on the main street, and
the use of horses on the wagon roads and the Dewdney
Trail, Rusty was a natural choice for our Sculpturewalk
installation, explains Renate Fleming from RCAC.
Well, Rustys year is almost and up and, effective Thursday, April 30, Rusty is scheduled to be returned to his creator, Nelson metal sculptor Cedar Mueller. Weve had a
lot of people and local businesses ask about keeping Rusty
in Rossland, explains Fleming. Weve approached Cedar
Mueller and she has agreed to sell Rusty to us. RCAC is
willing to contribute $5000, but we need to raise an additional $3000 by the end of April to finalize the purchase.
To accomplish this, RCAC has launched a fundraising
campaign.
If 100 Rusty fans donate $30 each, well reach the $3000
goal and then Rusty can stay, explains Andy Stradling
from RCAC, To sweeten the deal, RCAC will donate 2
tickets to an RCAC performance to anyone who donates
$100 or more. Major donations of $500 or more will also
be acknowledged on Rustys plaque. RCAC is very hopeful that they can raise enough money to keep Rusty.

Keeping Our Forests Clean

The RDCKs commitment to protecting communities
from intense wildfire by reducing fuel loads in forested
areas is taking shape across the region. Fuel management
projects can also increase the availability and diversity of
wildlife habitat through the restoration of open forest
conditions, says Noreen Clayton, emergency program
coordinator with the RDCK.
The RDCK is making significant process on the Edgewood fuel management project. Since November 2014,
Debri Resources of Nelson have treated 10 of 22 hectares.
Ten year old Edgewood resident Aslin Holberg, says she
now calls the area behind her school the enchanted forest because her classmates can cross country ski and take
nature photographs there now.
Work is also continuing on a 10-hectare parcel of Crown
land in Kingsgate. Cranbrooks Strategic Reforestations
eight-member crew has completed four hectares to date.
Projects in Arrow Creek and Balfour were completed in
December. A total of 53 hectares will have been treated in
Arrow Creek, Balfour, Edgewood, and Kingsgate by the
end of April.
Funding for these projects has been provided through
the Strategic Wildfire Initiative Program administered
by the Union of British Columbia Municipalities. The
Columbia Basin Trust and the Regional District of Central Kootenay have also provided funding.
