Mechanical Engineering Design
Product Title:

Gas Oven

Function/Purpose:

To cook and bake solid or semi solid food.

Un-intended Uses:
Heating of fluids which can lead to formation of vapors
which can generate pressure and damage the product.
Special Features:

Competition:

Automatic Thermostat
Flame separate from food and utensil.
Automatic Ignition via Piezoelectric igniter.
Smartphone controllable through internet via wifi.
Recipe bank for various common foods
Programmable temperature cycles.
CO2 Sensor for detection of CO2 produced by burning whose
feedback can be used to control temperature and time.

Electric Oven, Stoves,

Intended Market:

Restaurants, Home kitchens, Bakeries

Need of Product:

Conventional stoves may burn the food due to excessive

heating.
Temperature control in conventional gas ovens is not good.
Programmable temperature cycles are not present within
conventional designs.

Functional Performance:

Flame should not come in contact with food.

Quick Temperature rise.
Ease of handling food in hot ovens to minimize thermal burns
and injuries.
Wide space maximum utility.
Smart Phone controlled, Wifi, LCD control screen.
Programmable temperature cycles.
Aluminum casing from inside, with MICA insulation

Physical Requirements:

5 ft x 1.5 ft x 1.5 ft.

Ground clearance should be inch
Door Width: 1.2 ft x 1.3 ft.
Easy disassembly of parts for internal cleaning.

Gas Requirements:

2 dm3 burning per second for maintaining temperature at

400C.
Emergency Valve for gas.
Regulator to regulate amount of gas input.

Service Requirements:

Extreme temperatures up to 400 Centigrade.

Ceramics and insulators used should be used should be able
to bear thermal shocks

Should be able to work for 20,000 hours which is appx = 2.28

yrs of continuous service.
Thermal stresses should be considered in design and
material selection.
Short circuit prevention.
Easy repair incase of both mechanical and electrical damage.
LCD and electronic mechanism should me made secure both
electrically and thermally as these are not easy to replace or
repair.
Internal surface should be easy to clean.

Life Cycle Issues:

Human Factors:

Easy to place and remove food.

Rounded corners for aesthetic design and preventing cloth
snagging and bruises
Burn prevention while handling food inside the oven.
