Your AWWA award

Congratulations!
Erfan Goharian, a PhD student at the lab, won the Eva Nieminski Honorary Graduate
Scholarship in January 2015. The Graduate Science and Engineering Scholarship was created by
the Intermountain Section of the American Water Works Association (AWWA) to encourage
advanced education and training in the field of water quality, supply and treatment and to support
an outstanding graduate student in that field.

The LID and climate impacts paper from Zahra

Erfan Goharian worked in collaboration with Polytechnic Institute of NYU (Dr. Karamouz)
and University of Tehran (Dr. Zahmatkesh) to build a new framework to map
coastal/urban floodplains and develop planning strategies in New York City.
They implement new decentralized alternatives to mitigate the impact of climate change on
future floods in New York City. The results of study are presented in different papers and
published by well-known ASCE journals:
Karamouz, M., Zahmatkesh, Z, Goharian, E., Nazif, S. (2014), Combined impact of inland and coastal floods: mapping knowledge base for
development of planning strategies. Journal of Water Resources Planning and Management 10.1061/(ASCE)WR.1943-5452.0000497 ,

CMIP5 Climate Projections. Journal of Hydrologic Engineering, 10.1061/(ASCE)HE.1943-5584.0001064 , 05014022.

3.

Your collaborative work with Jason Lillywhite

Erfan Goharian is working with Jason Lillywhite (GoldSim Technology Group) to test new
GoldSim features (flow module) by developing the integrated water resource management
(IWRM) for Salt Lake City and. They consider fundamental inter-relationships between different
modules and coupling different models to improve water resources management. The result of
this study is recently presented in AWRA's 2015 Spring Specialty Conference at Los Angeles,
CA.

Outreach:

Outreach Video
The group is always excited to be engaged in outreach of various types. We especially enjoy
sharing the urban water world with students in K-12 from Salt Lake City.
Video is attached in email (Erfan Goharian and Dasch Houdeshel) they are helping to .
Link to Ci-Water video

CI-WATER research assistant and U of U doctoral student Erfan Goharian explains that he chose
a career in STEM because he sees water rationing as a problem he might help solve. In
collaboration with Utah State University, Brigham Young University, and
University of Wyoming, he is developing a new cyberinfrastructure
framework to support integrated system modeling for water resources in
Utah.

SLC-IWRM tool:
Erfan Goharian has been working closely with Salt Lake City Department of Public Utilities
managers and researchers to update them about future condition of SLCs hydroclimate system.
He built Salt Lake City Integrated Water Resources Management (SLC-IWRM) Tool to aid decision

makers, researchers, and student can work with this to evaluate the performance of SLC water system under
historical or various management alternatives.

5. Website of parleys
Erfan Goharian (University of Utah), Nathan Swain, and Scott Christensen
(Bingham Young Univeristy), as a part of CI-Water project, developed the
Parleys Creek Management which is accessible for people through: http://demo.tethys.ciwater.org/apps/parleys-creek-management/. This app can be used to evaluate various
management scenarios for the Parley's Creek system to give this ability to managers,
stakeholders, and users to test different alternatives. This also can be used to test climate change
scenarios (uncertain future extreme climate conditions) to evaluate the reservoirs' performance.
