R&D and innovation

Centers operating worldwide from Spain.
Our Innovation Center in Asturias
Located in northern Spain (Gijn, Asturias) since
2007, this Innovation Center is geared towards radical
innovations in horizontal and vertical passenger
transport systems.
Made up mostly of industrial engineers with different
specialties, the young team is responsible for research
and new developments in the following products:
escalators, moving walkways, elevators, passenger
boarding bridges for airports and accessibility products.

It has offices designed primarily to offer a creative

atmosphere and a state-of-the-art laboratory for fullscale prototypes. It is part of the so-called Knowledge
Mile as it is located in the historic building of the
Universidad Laboral, a few meters from the Gijn
Science and Technology Park and the University
Campus.
All this promotes opportunities for collaboration with
various R&D and technology centers in the region.

The market success

of ThyssenKrupp
products is closely
linked to their quality,
degree of innovation
and the Groups
commitment to
sustainability.
A perfect relationship exists between
the high standards set for safety,
reliability and design trends, as well as
consideration for our customers requests
and our commitment to go beyond mere
compliance with current environmental
and product legislation.

Our philosophy of innovation

Our Innovation Center in Madrid

This Innovation Center, together with our new
factory, which boasts the latest technology,
an elevator test tower and one of the biggest
logistic centers within the ThyssenKrupp Group,
is located in the Mstoles Technology Park
(Madrid) since 2011.

Working with the latest techniques and

cutting-edge technologies, the Innovation
Center designs both safety components and
complete elevator systems.
One of our priorities is to improve energy
efficiency within a sustainable framework for
all our products, both while in operation and
throughout their entire life cycle.

We also have an International Technical Service (ITS) Center, which includes a professional
team whose goal is to provide the best elevator and escalator service of all the brands on the
market. This innovative program is designed to meet the needs of our customers. In addition, it
receives technical and logistics support from other Group ITS Centers, such as the ones in Dallas,
Manchester, Stuttgart, Dubai or Shanghai.

All our developments

are designed to
ensure the safety
of our products,
both for end users
and for assembly
and maintenance
personnel.

TurboTrack the accelerated moving walkway
A revolutionary horizontal solution for transporting
passengers, developed entirely in Asturias. This
high-tech walkway combines two different speeds:
entering and exiting are carried out at a standard
speed (0.65 m/s), while the central area reaches
a constant transport speed (2 m/s). Passengers
experience the feeling of comfort and safety at all
times.
The TurboTrack won first prize in the ThyssenKrupp
Innovation Contest held in 2007. It was awarded both
TV SD and TSSA certification in 2008.

In 2007 TurboTrack was the first project to receive CANADEKA certification within the Bilateral
Program for Technological Cooperation between the Center for Industrial Technological
Development (CDTI) and the National Research Council of Canada (NRC). This program promotes
international technological cooperation between companies from Spain and Canada through
projects dealing with technological development, innovation and technology transfer.

Our philosophy of innovation

iwalk the sustainable modular walkway

This is our most innovative walkway, created as a result of finding
out our customer needs through careful research and surveys.
Its completely flat design reduces the risk of stumbling as the
transition between the access area and the walkway is only seven
millimeters high, instead of the forty-five millimeters in previous
systems.

Conventional moving
walkway

iwalk
(pit configuration)

iwalk
(pitless configuration)

The engineers decided to reduce its dimensions so that pit depth

could also be diminished by a third as compared to conventional
systems. The horizontal iwalk model only sinks thirty-six
centimeters into the floor and can even be installed directly on top
of it. All that is needed is a ramp at either end. Thus the iwalk can
be assembled and disassembled quickly, for example, at trade
fairs, or moved from one side of the building to another in case of
refurbishments.

It is environmentally friendly. Created at the

Innovation Center in Asturias, this walkway has
been developed to include all possible innovations,
but using fewer components, allowing us to reduce
its weight, which in turn results in low power
consumption. Designed with sustainability criteria,
this product serves as reference for the entire market,
with its smaller external dimensions and more
interior space. By having lower freight and packaging
volume, we are able to reduce environmental impact
as well.

This product was

awarded first prize
in the ThyssenKrupp
Innovation Contest
held in 2011.

Our philosophy of innovation

TWIN Elevator

synergy Elevator

This unique system is the first to have two elevator cabs travelling independently,
one above the other, in the same shaft. Developed within the Group, this spaceand material-saving technology offers many advantages over conventional
elevator systems, including the fact that waiting and travel times are minimized,
in part thanks to the intelligent destination control system which reduces empty
trips and waiting time to a minimum and enables passengers to arrive at their
destination faster. It also allows the number of shafts needed to be reduced
by one third, thus freeing up additional useable space over all the floors of the
building.

Using a gearless drive system, we keep

a step ahead, anticipating new building
regulations (new technical code) and
meeting the highest demands in terms
of reducing consumption, low operation
noise and ecology, with the elimination of
the reducer and its lubricant. This machine
room-less system for office and residential
buildings has already been awarded a
Class A efficiency rating according to

13

e-flex Elevator
VDI4707 regulations in several countries. Nonetheless, it is possible to further
improve efficiency: during prolonged pauses in operation, an intelligent control
system disables all non-essential components step by step until only the external
call button remains active. This sleep-mode function enables energy savings of up
to 86% in standby mode.
Developed entirely in Mstoles, synergy is the elevator designed for the buildings
of the future. The latest technology, quality and design make synergy a unique
product. Since its launch in 2007, nearly 30,000 units have been manufactured
and sold in over 60 countries.

This is the new concept in an elevator having a machine

room, allowing maximum flexibility for both existing shafts and
new installations.
A sustainable elevator, it once again reflects ThyssenKrupps
commitment to sustainable efficiency: maximum efficiency
with reduced energy consumption, thanks to components
such as gearless drive, VF inverter, LED lighting and
automatic cabin lighting control.
