Objective
To study the velocity ratios of an epicyclic gear by locking and unlocking different
gear sets
Apparatus
1
Procedure
1 Note the arrangement of the two epicyclic gear systems. The number of teeth
for the gear systems are as follows:
Set 1
Sun gear
36
teeth
Planet gear =
17
teeth
Ring gear
70
teeth
46
teeth
Planet gear =
15
teeth
Ring gear
76
teeth
Set 2
Sun gear
First Experiment
Insert pin between the teeth of the planet gear for set 1.
Pulley at gear set 2 is the driver (input) and and pulley at gear set 1 is the
follower (output).
Rotate the driver pulley so that the zero degree mark on the protractor
coincides with the blue line marker.
Loosen the screw on the follower pulley and set the zero degree mark on the
protractor to coincide with the blue line marker. Tightened the screw to lock
the follower pulley. Reading of both pulley is now zero.
-1-
Record the number of revolution ( in terms of degrees) that the follower gear
makes .
Second Experiment
Third Experiment
20 Lock the locking nut on shaft at gear set.1 and gear set.2
21 Pulley at gear set 2 as the driver (input) and and pulley at gear set 1 as the
follower (output).
22 Rotate the driver pulley so that the zero degree mark on the protractor
coincides with the blue line marker.
23 Loosen the screw on the follower pulley and set the zero degree mark on the
protractor to coincide with the blue line marker. Tightened the screw to lock
the follower pulley. Reading of both pulley is now zero.
24 Rotate the driver by revolution(90).
25 Record the number of revolution ( in terms of degrees) that the follower
pulley makes.
-2-
26 By looking from the driver side, note the direction of rotation (clockwise
or.counter-clockwise) that the follower and driver makes.
27 Repeat for a few complete revolutions of the driver shaft.
28 Record your results in the Table 3 below

Velovity Ratio
Plot the graph of the speed of the follower to the speed of the driver.
From the graph determine the average speed ratio by calculating the slope.
Compare it with the theoretical value
Write down your observation and make your conclusion.
With the above arrangement theoretically explore the locking arrangement of
other gear to produce a different speed ratio.
