YEAR 12 HSC Assessment Task 2 - 2015

MATHEMATICS (2U) Accelerants


DATE: Week 5A, Monday 23rd February

TIME: Period 2 & Period 6

TIME ALLOWED: PART A 45 minutes plus 2 minutes Reading Time (Period 2) ; PART B 40 minutes plus
2 minutes Reading Time (Period 6)
HSC ASSESSMENT WEIGHTING: 30%; PART A = 15% and PART B = 15%

Only Board-approved calculators are permitted in this task.

No other materials such as class notes, textbooks or any other reference materials are permitted.

Please refer to your student handbook outlining what to do if you are unable to sit the task
this document includes possible consequences.

TASK: Examination ~ The content to be assessed will come from the following topics:

Students will write their answers in the examination booklets supplied.


Students are to bring with them their Geometry set, ruler, lead pencil, eraser, writing
pens, sharpener, and scientific calculator. A MathAid/Graphing template is allowed
your teacher will advise you of the Board approved template.

You will be assessed on your ability to:

Construct arguments to prove and justify results


Manipulate algebraic expressions
Express practical problems in mathematical terms based on simple given models
Apply appropriate techniques from the study of calculus, geometry, probability, trigonometry and
series to solve problems
Use the derivative to determine the features of the graph of a function
Use the features of a graph to deduce information about the derivative
Use techniques of integration to calculate areas and volumes
Communicate using mathematical language, notation, diagrams and graphs

NB: A Standard Table of Integrals will be supplied for this Task

In preparing for this task you are encouraged to:

Attend the Mathematics Tutorials after school if the need arises.


Download and complete past comparable HSC Assessment Tasks available on the Knox Portal and the
Learning Management System (LMS); the latter via a hyperlink.
Attempt the Chapter Review Exercises where applicable.
Do the more challenging problems from the exercises within the relevant text chapters.
Prepare a summary of your class notes - this should include good worked examples, definitions, basic
facts and key formulae.
Maintain contact with your class teacher for further or specific advice in relation to study techniques in
Mathematics.
