1.

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge

forms and conventions of real media products?
The title of my magazine is named FIEND and I used the font Diamond Heavy
because it was big and bold like other magazines such as CLASH and Fader
which are very successful in the magazine industry. I chose the name FIEND
because its meaning is to be an enthusiast or devotee to a particular thing and
in this case it means you are devoted to hip hop music. I decided to place my
masthead in the centre at the top of my cover in-between the images I have so
that the colours do not clash which would make it not stand out as much as it
does when the masthead is central. With the main magazine title I feel my font is
similar to is the NME titles because they are big, bold and the letters are placed
close together to make the title easier and quicker to read. For my masthead and
the main artist name underneath I have used monotone colours black and white
because it matches the theme within my magazine and both colours are
revealing towards each other and they match well. This is to attract the attention
of potential buyers and promote my branding. Again at the bottom half of my
magazine I have used the two colours black and white on the artists name
CeeJay as they correspond well and again it matches the theme and colour
scheme. It is important that all text stands out on the cover of a magazine and
that it is readable because the main parts are usually on the front cover and
these are the features that will have to catch the readers eyes as they walk past
this magazine on a shelf or stall.

The layout of the cover shows two images then an image in front. It is showing
the two artists that star in my magazine. This is a similar approach to one of the
complex magazines where there are two images on the left and right and then
one in the foreground. Below you can see the resemblance of the two covers.
There are only 3 main differences that separate these two magazines from being
identical. That is the colour scheme, the costumes of the artists and the mise en
scene. The colour scheme of the Complex magazine is more bright than mine
and has more powerful colours shown that will definitely attract the customers
where as I have gone for a more simple and darker colour scheme to match the
genre and artists. From the resemblance of the layout of these covers the slight
difference is that the two behind images are a different type of shot as mine is
one single mid shot on both sides of the magazine and the Complex is a long
shot of two different people.

I have dressed
Devatharu in all black
as he is shown in
the background behind
the main image on
the page and it
matches the colour
scheme of the
magazine well. Also I have used a black and white effect on the picture to make
it less revealing on the cover but still stand out when you look at the masthead
and the cover as a whole. With my other artist he is dressed in an expensive
brand showing what his style is and hid culture. It is also showing his
resemblance to the readers who might take interests in the same well-known
brands which could make them more interested in buying the magazine.
With my contents page I decided to show some features of the layouts that
magazines have such as Fader, but with my own simple and more basic style. I
have used the idea of having more images than text like on Fader contents pages
because it has a more simplistic affect and it displays the page nicer for my
target audience so they are able to see the main topic's and features that are in
the magazine. The text on the contents page set out in a format layout which I
used from magazines like Vibe who show minimalistic text and a simple layout
for the text. The text is also not too big or too small and there are only short
sentences describing parts of the contents so that again there is less text than
images.

2. How does your media product represent particular social groups?

Similarities:

Ethnicity

Religion

Age they started their career

Clothes

Lifestyle

Brands/type of clothes
They wear same style

Future

Tough childhood

grew up rough
Both are rappers

Differences:

Where they grew up

How old they are

There are two main social groups that

represent my media product. These are the
'Hipsters' and 'Stylers'. The research I did to
find these social groups was on 'UKtribes'
and I found that hipsters are all about
brands and fashion. They also like to flash
their style in public and online. With the
stylers they are similar to the hipsters as
they love fashion, love looking good and
they have interests in genres of music like
house and hip hop. The way I have
represented my artist 'CeeJay' is a cross
mixed between both the stylers and
hipsters. The way I have shown this is
mainly the way I have dressed him. As both
of these social groups have major interests
in street wear and fashion. I have dressed
him in three very popular brands:
Undefeated, Adidas Originals and Billionaire
Boys Club. Eminem is a huge artist in the
rap industry and in some ways I believe he
is very similar to the artist in my magazine,
CeeJay. The many similarities consist of
ethnicity, age they started their career,
same style of clothes and brands they wear
and they both grew up in a neglected way.
CeeJay and Eminem look very much alike
also with the way they rap and even the
tone of their voices. Eminems biography
states At the age of 14, he began to get
very serious about his rapping but it wasn't
until he was 17 that he actually made a
name for himself so this is almost exactly
the same as CeeJay who is now 17 and
beginning a serious career. However there
are a few differences between the two
artists. They both grew up in different
countries which impacts their future as an

How famous they are

How rich they are

Nationality

Lives

Within the grime and hip hop industry there is a very well knows and famous
producer who goes by the name Preditah. He makes instrumental beats for
rappers and keeps his identity on the low. There are only a handful of images
that show what he looks like and the style he chooses to dress in. There are three
main reasons why I believe that Devatharu and Preditah are very similar. These
are the way they dress, the type of industry they are both interested in and are a
part of and they share the same amount of determination and commitment.
The social group that expresses Devatharu the most is the Get Paid Crew. These
individuals are determined to be their own boss and forge their way in the world
and in this case the hip hop industry. They have firmly set targets in life which
they are very determined to achieve and the three key words that sum up this
social group are business, style and grafting.

3. What kind of media institution might distribute your media

product and why?
To get a media product on the market you need a publisher or a company that
will publish your product for you like I have chosen the company Bauer Media.
These worldwide media distributers usually spend time and money on things like
development, editing, printing and copying. Due to the big cost of publishing you
can invest in funding or business loans that will help you start to publish. There
are many companies that are similar to Bauer but this company has a unique
way of publishing media products. They distribute different genres and types of
media products which is something many institutions avoid. They distribute
products of the same genre only. This is one of the main reasons why I chose
Bauer because my magazine will be distributed to a wide audience.
Bauer are a group that focuses on magazine and music media products and
distribute these products to 17 countries all around the world including Hong
Kong and Australia. This means that with the help of this institution then my
magazine would be read all over the world reaching people who have interests in
hip hop from other countries as well as the UK. Bauer media group also distribute
two of the most popular magazines MOJO and Q which are very successful
magazines. Although my magazine is of a different genre to these I still believe
Bauer would want to make their audience even wider with the help of my
magazine. Bauer media group are a widely recognised and rewarded institution
which is one of the many reasons I again chose this institution. The final reason
why I believe Bauer media is a suitable company to distribute my magazine is
that it has huge connection with worldwide social media companies such as
YouTube, Tumblr, Facebook and Vimeo which means they push their products to
the edge to make sure they are sold to every person interested and every person
possible.

4. Who would be the audience for your media product?

From my research I have decided to target my audience at young males aged 17
25 who take interest in the genre which is Hip Hop. I have chosen this age
range as my target audience because this is the age where they usually begin to
start getting passionate about music and also they explore to find different
genres that they find suits them. Another reason that this is the most suitable
age range is because teenagers usually start to get jobs aged 16 or 17 which will
give them the funding to buy my media product. There were two main websites I
used to find research about my target audience. These websites were ukTribes
and YouGov which allowed me to find out things like the personal lifestyle of a
17 year old male and what interests they might have.
When I designed my media product I had to keep my audience research in mind
to make sure I was making my magazine inviting and attractive to that specific
audience. The two models I used also had to mix within the age range and apply
to the target audience because then they can relate to each other making the
magazine suitable for this audience. I also used a simple layout for all three
pages and little text again making it so the target audience approves.
Tom is an example of someone who fits my target audience by their daily
lifestyle and their personality. Tom is an 18 year old student who is an apprentice
in a mechanics workshop and in his spare time is a DJ for Leicester Cross
Counties. He has 1 hour slots where he entertains listeners with hip hop, grime
and house music. Other interests he has are rapping and graffiti. You will always
find him wearing full tracksuits and a pair of Adidas superstars. The many brands
he takes interest in are Nike, Adidas, Converse and Ralph Lauren.

5. How did you attract/address your audience?

Another way I
addressed my
audience was using a
simple colour scheme
with no more than 5
noticeable differences
in colour tones. This is
because the people in
my target audience
would not be
interested in very
colourful things with
bright colours because
I dressed the artist on
the cover in expensive
street wear brands that
my target market
audience will be
interested in. these
brands consist of
Stussy, Undefeated,
The Hundreds and

Another way I addressed

my audience was using a
very simple and readable
font and also I have made
the text in all capitals so it
gives the contents page a
detailed approach and
also again unique.
I have included the name
of the magazine website
at the top so the reader
might visit it and will
then see the features
and collections of Feind
magazines. They then
might be interested
because it is something
separate to the

The masthead is big, bold, and easy to read

and it stands out which attracts the eyes of
the audience who will read the writing in
more detail and see that it is a Hip Hop
magazine.

The way I dressed my

artists was to match the
target audience so they
can relate to the features
of the magazine and they
will buy it because it

page I have stuck to a
simple and detailed layout
which attracts the target
audience because they
want minimum text and
usually an even amount of
both images and text.

There are four main

brands I have also
dressed my artists
in on this page
which will again be
common with the
target market.
These four brands
are Undefeated,
Crooks and Castles,
The North Face and

6. What have you

technologies
constructing this

learnt about
from the process of
product?

Computer & Laptop:

Within the making of my magazine I used both a
school computer and my own personal laptop.
Both of these devices had the correct
programmes and technologies in order to
complete my magazine such as Photoshop and
online sites.
Camera & Camera Equipment:
The camera that was used for all the photography on my magazine
was a Nikon D3200 which provides a very high quality image which
is suitable to be used for my magazine because it will give a
professional look to my images. There is also a handful of items
that the camera was equipped with that would help even more to
make the photo-shoot look professional and to a high standard.
The equipment consisted of lighting, tripod and the background
screen. The lighting was there to allow no shadows behind the
model creating a professional effect. The tripod was there to
support the camera and again making the photography as
professional as possible. The background screen was there to
provide a plain white backdrop. The many things I have learnt from these
technologies are things to do with
Photoshop:
The technology of the programme Photoshop was widely used
within the construction of this product. Photoshop was used for
the main development application within the design and making
up of my media magazine. There are many features which allow
you to create effects and edit. Much of this work is the research
and planning showing all the steps I went through to find out
things like my target audience, layouts to use, which magazines
I should follow, what colour scheme to use etc.
Google Chrome:

Google chrome was the main source of internet where I gathered

various pieces of information that helped me produce my product.
Something that I learnt while using Google chrome was a feature
called Google drive which allowed me to access big files from my
home laptop.
Scribd:
Scribd is an online programme where you can turn
documents like this word document into an easily readable
format and also a format that you can embed onto my blog
posts making it also easier for the examiner to read.

Animoto:
Animoto is an effective way of producing good quality pre
edited videos, mainly short clips. Within my research and
planning I used this technology to create my pitch for my
media product which stated the audience of my magazine
and things such as cost and genre.

7. Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have
learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

Comparing both my preliminary and my final magazine there are many things
that I have learnt and improved on such as layouts, conventions, photography
and editing. The first noticeable features about both my covers are the size of
the text shown. The text on my final cover is much smaller than the text on my
preliminary because I didnt have that understanding and experience of how big
the text usually is on front covers. Also from the photography you can see the
lighting shown is very much more professional on the final pieces compared to
the prelim. There are a number of more images and also the editing of them is
more with technique.
