The first recipient was the Ability

The Ability Center has plans for a universally designed athletic and recreational facility for those with disabilities but

Refreshing innovations
By Tresa Erickson
It is not uncommon for homes built in the
1970s to have paneled walls. Paneling was
quite popular then, but not so much anymore.
If you have paneling in your home, do not
despair. You can reinvent it with a little elbow
grease. Here are some ideas.
Paint is one of the easiest and most inexpensive ways to reinvent wood paneling. You
can go with any color you want, and depending upon the look you are after, you can fill
the grooves or leave them unfilled. If you are
looking to create stripes, for example, you
might want to leave the grooves as are and
use them as a guide to mark off the stripes.
After a light sanding and cleaning, you will be
all ready to prime and paint.
If paint is not your thing, perhaps wallpaper is. Wallpaper comes in a variety of texture
and patterns. You can use almost any wallpaper you want, and the prep work is fairly
easy. Just fill the grooves with joint compound,
sand, clean and apply liner or sizing and the
wallpaper.

Plaster is another option, but it will take

some time to do. There are many types available for novices. For the best results, you
should prime the paneling, attach the metal
lath and apply the plaster as recommended.
Depending upon your needs, you can create
a smooth, glossy finish or an earthy, flat finish.
Love the look of your paneling? Keep it
and give it an update with a new finish or new
trim. You can sand, stain and varnish solid
wood paneling just like you would any solid
wood furniture piece. You can even use stencils and painters tape to create a pattern.
Laminate wood paneling is a bit more difficult,
but can still be sanded and stained. The stain
may not penetrate evenly, however, so you
might want to experiment in a corner first. You
can create any number of patterns on paneling with molding. Just cut the trim, nail it to the
paneling, putty the holes and paint or stain
the trim as you see fit.
None of these ideas appeal to you?
Check online and at your local hardware
store for further suggestions. And remember, if
nothing appeals to you, you can always
remove the paneling. Just be aware that what
you uncover may not be in the best of condition. Installing new drywall can be time consuming and costly.

Options to consider for your flooring project

If youve repainted the walls, added new
furniture and changed your sofa pillows, yet
something is still amiss in your home, consider that large surface area: the floor. Floors
set the tone of your living space.
To avoid surprises and unexpected costs,
try these tips from the World Floor Covering
Association.
Find The Right Flooring
When it comes to selecting the most
appropriate flooring for your home, consider
how it will be used and how often.
A high-traffic room demands materials
that can stand up to wear and tear. Highquality flooring is essential. And buying from
a reputable retailerone who knows their
products, gets to know their customers and
will be there to stand behind what they recommend and sellis going to pay off down
the road.
Not all flooring is the same. In every categorycarpet, tile, resilient, laminate, hardwoodthere are products of varying quality.
It is important to do your research and, just
as important, to work with a retailer who has
firsthand history with the flooring products
they sell and the manufacturers that make
them.
Maintenance is another key consideration. Some floors require more upkeep than
others. For instance, some types of hardwood can become dull if not swept or
mopped daily. If you have kids or pets, consider the following: multi-colored, textured
carpet to hide blemishes and wear; engineered wood offering diamond-hard surface

treatments to avoid abrasions; or resilient

vinyl, which can be made to look like many
other types of flooring and is very durable
and easy to clean. Ceramic tile is another
good option for high traffic.
The area of the country in which you live
has an impact on the flooring you choose,
too. How much sunlight does the room get?
Many flooring materials wont fade, but
someincluding carpetmight. Humidity can
affect durability. Some floors are fine in
humid environments but otherssuch as
woodare not. Are you considering radiant
heat under your floors? Not all surface materials are compatible with this option.
Working with a knowledgeable retailer will
be very helpful when making final decisions.
Considering Overall Design
Think about how the room will be furnished. Would you like to warm up the room
with a carpet or cool it down with ceramic?
Do you want a patterned or brightly colored
floor to liven up neutral furniture or a quiet
background to help statement pieces stand
out? Cultivate your own design ideas, then
call on the knowledge and experience of a
reliable flooring retailer to see it through.
Your Path To Purchasing
Check out your flooring options in person. Online research is important but talking
with a professional who deals in flooring
every day is essential. Plus, theres no substitute for seeing and touching the flooring you
wish to purchase.
There are a few more things to consider.
The following list of questions prepared by

the World Floor Covering Association can

help you make an informed choice and
avoid unexpected costs and surprises:
Does the retailer offer a complimentary
inspection prior to installation to determine
what kind of substrate you have and whether
it is flat?
What does the retailer charge to remove
and dispose of old flooring? Removing flooring can increase costs substantially, so you
may want to find flooring that can go over
your existing flooring.
Will your doors clear your new floors? If

not, the doors may need to be trimmed to

accommodate the new height, or you might
want to choose alternative flooring materials.
Does the retailer charge to move furniture? Be sure to mention heavy items that
might not be found in every home, such as a
piano.
If the new flooring is going into a bathroom, will the retailer remove the toilet as
part of their installation?
Does your new flooring need to be acclimated prior to installation?

Preparing for spring flooding

As temperatures rise and the snowpack
begins to melt, homeowners should prepare
for the possibility of spring flooding.
Communities across the country, particularly
in the Northeast and Midwest, are at risk for
flooding.
Spring rains saturate the frozen ground,
which cannot quickly absorb runoff, accumulating on the surface or flowing into streams
and rivers, where the excess water spills over
the banks.
Floods are the nations number one natural disaster, and all 50 states have experi-

enced a flood in the past five years.

Everyone lives in a flood zone, so no matter
where you live in the United States, you are
at risk of flooding. However, most homeowners insurance doesnt cover flood damage,
and without a flood insurance policy, you
could have to pay for damage out of your
own pocket.
Here are five things you can do to financially protect what matters:
Know your risk. Use the One-Step Flood
Risk Profile, available on FloodSmart.gov to
determine your flood risk and locate a flood

Wetzel
Construction

insurance agent in your area.

Purchase a flood insurance policy.
Typically, there is a 30-day waiting period
before flood insurance goes into effect, so
protect what matters now by purchasing a
policy before the snow starts to melt.
Check your flood insurance policy. Know
what is covered and what you need to file a
claim. If you do not have a flood insurance
policy, talk with your flood insurance agent
about purchasing coverage for future losses.
Document your belongings to support a
flood
insurance
claim.
Visit

KnowYourStuff.org to create your home

inventory.
Create and share a family emergency
plan. Make sure it includes evacuation routes
from home, work, and school. Assemble an
emergency supplies kit with drinking water,
canned food, first aid supplies, blankets, a
radio, and a flashlight. Learn more at
Ready.gov/floods.
Go to FloodSmart.gov or call 888-3566370 for more information. Dont be caught
off guard by spring flooding. Prepare in
advance to protect what matters.

Compost for a better lawn

By Tresa Erickson
Do you compost? Do you save grass
clippings, leaves, yard waste, kitchen
scraps and more for the compost bin? If so,
you have some really good fertilizer on
your hands, and unlike traditional chemical-based fertilizers, your compost will not
harm the environment.
Compost is great for top-dressing
lawns two or three times a year. It adds
vital nutrients to the lawn, including nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium. It works
fast, doesnt smell and wont stain concrete
or burn the grass. And, it is easy to apply.
No matter where you live, the best time
to top-dress your lawn is when the grass is
actively growing. If you live in an area with
a cool climate, spring to mid-summer is

ideal. If you live in a warm climate, midsummer is ideal.

Top-dressing a lawn with compost is
easy. First, you need to aerate and seed
the lawn. Then, you can apply the compost. Make sure the compost is finely textured. This will ensure even raking later. If
your compost is coarse and lumpy, consider purchasing some from a nursery.
Apply the compost on a dry, calm day.
Shovel some around the yard in piles and
then spread it out in a thin layer. When you
are finished, you should be able to see
more grass than compost. If you dont, you
have spread it too thickly and it could
smother the grass.
Next, water the compost for about 20
minutes or so. Then, leave it be. Give it

Will the installers clean up after themselves?
Prepare For Installation
The retailer should provide a checklist on
how to prepare for installation. In addition, if
your renovation project involves painting or
staining walls where new floors are going to
be put down, the wall treatment should be
completed first. Clear the room. Remove
fragile and valuable items and appliances,
books and decorations. Artwork and photographs on the walls should also be taken
down.
Clear a path for the installation crew to
carry bulky, heavy items in and out. When
they arrive, ask the installers to go over their
plans with you so you know exactly what to
expect. Make sure patterned floors will be
set down in the right direction.
Post-installation
Thoroughly inspect the flooring.
Immediately bring any concerns to the
stores attention.
Most importantly, enjoy your new floors!

time to work its way into the soil, break

down and release vital nutrients. After a
week, you should be able to mow and
water your lawn as usual. Within a few
weeks, you should begin to see some
improvement.

Top-dressing your lawn with compost a

few times a year will do it good. You will
have a fuller, greener, healthier lawn.
More importantly, you will make Mother
Earth happy and never have to rely on
chemical-based fertilizers again.

The

Perfect Wedding
Keep the peace
By Tresa Erickson
It's no secret. While weddings are supposed to be a source of joy, they can also be a
source of conflict. As soon as the question is
popped and the engagement is announced,
couples are often bombarded with advice from
well-meaning family and friends. Here are
some tips to help you keep your sanity intact
and conflict to a minimum during the planning
of your wedding.
Be realisticKnow from the get-go that people are going to be excited and many of them
will want to be involved in your wedding planning, even if it just doling out advice to you.
Involve as many of them as you can, but never
lose sight of the fact that it is your wedding.
Listen to what they have to say, use what you
can and leave it at that. Never ever give someone the upper hand, unless it is what you and
your beloved want.
Be understandingSome people can't help
themselves. They have an opinion and they simply must share it with you, even if it is not really
their place to do so. Again, honor their need to
help by listening but don't feel obligated to follow their advice. Thank them for their advice,

reassure them you will take it under consideration and move on.
Be directSome people cannot take no for
an answer. Be aware of this and learn how to
deal with the pressure. Let them know that while
you appreciate their idea, it will not work for
you. Do not give in and make unnecessary
compromises. If they continue to push, explain
to them what you have chosen to do so instead.
The additional information might be enough to
satisfy them.
Be clearGive those involved clearly
defined roles and make your wishes known to
them. Communicate daily, either through email
or phone, what has and hasn't been done. Set
up a website to keep everyone informed of the
progress. The more you communicate, the less
chance there will be of a misunderstanding later.
Be proactiveSpot the potential for conflict
and take steps to avoid it. If your parents
divorced on unhappy terms, do not expect
them to work together on your wedding. Have
each of them assist you with different tasks and
seat them apart at your wedding. The same
goes for any other family or friends in conflict.
Respect their need for distance.

Yours, theirs, ours

By Tresa Erickson
Your wedding is just weeks away, and
after months of planning the big day in great
detail, you're ready for a break. Good thing
you planned a honeymoon immediately following your reception. You'll get chance to rest
and relax before you return and start combining households.
Couples are marrying later these days,
making the transition to one household a bit
more difficult, especially for those who have
lived on their own for some time. In addition to
your houseful of stuff, you may have your
spouse's houseful of stuff, plus all the wedding
gifts you received, to sort through. That's a lot
of stuff, and you may find that you need to
pare it down. Here are some tips to make the
decision process easier.
Shift your perspective: You've got your
stuff. Your spouse has got theirs. But now that
you're married and setting up a home together,
it's no longer your stuff and their stuff but ours.
Look at everything as belonging to the two of
you and you'll begin to see what really needs
to go.
Weed out the unnecessary: You love your
toaster. Your spouse loves theirs. And those two
toasters you received as wedding gifts, well,
they're nice, too. But come on, do you really
need four toasters? No, you don't, and bearing
in mind that the toasters belong to you and
your spouse, you should be able to select the
best one, not two or three, for your needs.
Toss the broken: Yeah, yeah, you've been
meaning to glue that vase back together for
months now. And your spouse has been meaning to take their record player to the repair
shop since you have known them. Neither of
you have gotten around to it, and just because
you're a team doesn't mean you will do it now.
You were a team before, maybe not officially
but a duo nevertheless, and now that you are
married, you will have more important things to
spend your money on other than repairs on
items you should really let go of.
Trust and respect one another: Once
you've made your way through all of the boxes
and weeded out all of the trash and non-essentials, you will be faced with the hard part of
sorting through the stuff you most treasure. The
"ours" perspective really comes in handy here.
Keep things that work for the two of you, and

trust your spouse to help you with this process.

Respect their opinions, and they will respect
yours.
Be prepared to give a little: Just because
you see an item as junk doesn't mean your
spouse will. Again, respect is key. Listen to their
reasons for keeping the item, and if you detect
that they have a real attachment, consider letting them keep it, especially if it something you
also like and will use.
Look to an outside source: When the decisions get really tough, look to another source
for help. It could be a trusted friend or family
member or a designer you've hired. It could be
the decor of the room or the style of your
home. Your ultra modern metal chairs, for
example, might not do justice to your Victorian
home, whereas your spouse's wingback chairs
would.
Consider new: If all else fails and you're
still waffling, consider letting go of the items in
favor of something new that the two of you
select together. If your budget permits, give
your niece and nephew your old childhood
bedroom sets and purchase a new set for your
bedroom. If not, mix pieces from your old bedroom sets and dress them to match.
Paring down and combining households is
rarely easy. But remember, you are one of two
now, so be prepared to make some compromises. It is only stuff. Don't get your marriage
off to a rocky start because of it. Choose what
reflects the two of you best as a couple and will
help you create a space that you can live
together in comfortably.

Dear Dr. Winter,

My crowned tooth, #19 has broken to the gum line almost 2
months ago. I have been researching dental implants since my
current dentist doesnt do implants. During this time I learned
about the AAID, which seems to have members serious about
implants. I obtained your name through the AAID American
Academy of Implant Dentistrys website.
I am of course researching price but also products and
procedures. I enclosed a digital x-ray of my broken tooth for you
to evaluate.
Everyplace I've gone to has indicated the need for bone grafting
and then the rest of the implant procedure. I've gone to an oral
surgeon and a periodontal specialist who both leave the crown for
the dentist to complete. I noticed on your website that you do the
surgery and the chimney and crown placement. Can you give me
the products you use and associated fees? Thank you in advance
for your time. K.J.
Dear Kathy, I am sorry you broke your tooth and am happy you
are doing some research to become well informed.
The x-ray you sent only shows me part of the story. I need to see
the opposing tooth, your biting scheme and the width of the bone
that is left around the root. I also need to see your remaining teeth
to make sure they arent having issues.
The answers you have been give are all accurate. Usually we take
the root out and graft the area with bone. This will help preserve
the dimension of bone in the area prior to placement of your
implant. Your insurance, if you have any is usually able to help
with the extraction cost but will often not cover the cost of socket
grafting or implant placement.
The implant, chimney and crown costs depend on the labs we
use and I offer two different implant systems which both work
fabulously if patients are in need of a lesser expensive option.
I use microscopic dental labs that spend a lot of time making
the implant chimney and crown according to my specifications.
Chimneys or abutments can be pre-made sometimes and at other
times a custom abutment may be needed to provide better
contours, support and strength for an implant crown.
If a patient has a budget that will determine what they do we
can make arrangements to use less expensive labs to meet their
needs. The concept of Upgradeable Dentistry that Dr. Winter
lectures about describes how we try and provide the implant
service, denture service or reconstruction service that meets your
budget and your cosmetic needs. There is a difference in what you
receive when you utilize master dental ceramists versus using a
larger volume dental lab.
Without seeing you and evaluating the quality and quantity of
your remaining bone, I can not give you fees but I can offer you
and our readers a complimentary consultation to review your
options with you. We also offer comprehensive examination and x-

Drs. Richard and Bruce Winter

ray visits for patients that want to get all costs the day they come
in for their visit. We do offer interest free financing for up to 2
years through Care Credit and we offer I-Care that wont refuse
anyone for credit if they have two forms of debit or credit cards
if they are not eligible for Care Credit.
Please visit my website to see examples of my work and videos
of patient testimonials.
I wish you luck and would be happy to see you for a
complimentary consultation if you wish. I use two different
implant systems; one of them is BioHorizons tapered internal
with Laser Lok technology and the other is MIS Seven implants.
Feel free to visit their websites to learn more about their
technologies.
They are both amazing companies that offer many restorative
options. In this day and age most implant systems work and are
made of high strength titanium alloy. The specifics of implant
design, surface coating, crestal implant design are all features
your dentist should be able to discuss with you if you ask.
I do not speak for the AAID and do not give opinions on their
behalf. I simply have stated what I do in my practice. I am board
certified in Implant Dentistry by the American Board of Oral
Implantologists/Implant Dentists through that organization.
You may call our office to schedule a visit at 414-464-9021 and
mention you spoke to me via e-mail for a special consideration.
Yours for better dentistry,
