BANDUNG
The City
Bandung, the capital city of West Java, is about 180 km (112 miles) southeast of Jakarta. With almost
three million inhabitants in Bandung City and over seven million in greater Bandung area, it is the
fourth greatest city in Indonesia. The city is rich in history, culture and education, architectural
heritage, shopping spots and tourism activities.
Bandung's Hussein Sastranegara (IATA: BDO) airport offers limited services mostly with small
planes. Air Asia flies at least daily to Bandung from Kuala Lumpur and Singapore while Merpati and
Sriwijaya Air fly from other big cities in Indonesia such as Surabaya. The preferred alternative is by
using flights to Jakarta's Soekarno-Hatta Airport then land transportation to Bandung which is an
approximately 3-hour drive.
By Land
- Shuttle Bus – various competing transport operator using 7 to 10 seater minivans to serve
Jakarta – Bandung route as well as Sukarno-Hatta Airport – Bandung route return or one way
trip (door to door or point to point).
- Train with frequent scenic trips between Jakarta and Bandung.
Other interesting places to visit are Saung Angklung Udjo, Bosscha Observatorium, Geological
Museum, Sri Baduga Maharaja Museum, Pos dan Giro Museum and Mandala Wangsit Siliwangi
Museum.
To unwind, Bandung offers many options. Saturday Night at Jalan Dago and Sunday Morning at
Gasibu Park are just to name a few.
For shopping, Bandung has a vast array of shopping malls, factory outlets and local handicraft shops.
For food connoisseurs, Bandung caters to all tastebuds. Local delicacies (bakso tahu, siomay,
batagor, soto bandung, mi kocok, laksa bandung and nasi timbel) complement more innovative
cuisines as well as international food easily found in the city.
Favourite getaways include Mount Tangkuban Perahu, Sari Ater natural hot spring water complex,
Maribaya Park with waterfall traps, Ciwidey tea plantation, Pangalengan lake, Situ Patenggang,
Kawah Putih (white crater), Ranca Upas camping ground, Situ Ciburuy lake and Saguling dam.
