Theywantedanexterioroutlet,sotheyjustdrilleda
holethroughthebrickfromanexistinginterioroutlet
towheretheywantedtheoutlet.Noneedforconduit
orsealing,justwirenutthewiresonbothsidesandbe
donewithit!(NotGFCI,either!)
Seethatneutralwire?Yeahthere'snoreasonwhythe
neutralneedstotakethesamepathbacktothepanel.
It'llbelikeafunchooseyourownadventurewhere
somebodyelsemakesallthechoices!Ohanddon't
worryifthatsameneutralservesseveralunrelated
circuits,that'snormalandnotdangerousatall!
Somebodydecidedthattheywanteda240Velectric
stoveinsteadofagasstove,sotheygotone120V
phasefromthekitchenoutlets.Theystillneedanother
phase,sotheytappedoffofthebedroomoutlets
upstairsandranitstraightdowntothekitchen,
combiningitwiththekitchenphase.Oh,andthe
breakerswerenowhereneareachotherinthepanel,
soofcoursenotgangedtogether.
Takingoutacoupleofwindows?Noproblem,we'lljust
brickthemup,usegrout,andwon'tbotherputtingin

ItoldtheRealtorthatthehousewasnotupcodebutIwouldstillliketo
buythehouse,pendingahomeinspection.Calledareputablehome
inspectorandafriendthatbuildshousesforalivingandtheybothwent
overitwithafinetoothcomb.Theyfoundabout8issueswherethehouse
failedtomeetrequirements,and15otherissuesthat,thoughnot
regulatedbyacode,wouldneedfixed.Iplacedmyofferabout8grand
lessthanaskingpriceandsaidthattheownerswouldhavetofixthe8
issuesthatdidnotmeetrequirements.Theycounteredwith6grandoff
askingpriceandwouldfix6ofthe8issues.Thetwoissuestheydidn't
wanttofixweredecentlyexpensiveifyoudidn'tknowsomebody.
Iacceptedtheirofferandfixedtheremaining2codeissuesandtheother
15problemsforabout$700bucks.Hadmyfriendhelpmewithsomeof
themoredifficultstuff.Wellworthitinmyopinion.Isoldthehousea
yearlaterfora$5Kprofit(aftertherealtorandalltheotherpeopletook
