The Division
Scene 1: Jean is rushed to the hospital after collapsing on the floor of her home after feeling
nauseous. Now lying in a hospital bed, her husband David, sister; Sara and mother Rosie are all
gathered in the small hospital room waiting for the doctors results. While waiting Rosie and
David started a conversation:
Rosie: How are you holding up David?
David: Im okay just really want to know what is wrong with her, hopefully she will wake up in
a few minute so I can ask her what caused the collapsing since I was at work and not there when
it occurred.
Rosie: Dont worry everything will be alright, lets just pray that the Lord will bring good news
toward us
After 10 minutes of waiting, a light knock on the door by Dr. Kunu got everyones attention:
Dr. Kunu: May I come in?
David: Oh yes doctor
Dr. Kunu: Hello my name is Dr. Kunu and you must be the husband, Mr. David it is?
David: Yes doctor
Dr. Kunu: Very well, I assume you all want to hear the news together?
Yes, Rosie and Sara stated
Dr. Kunu: Well after several examination and tests it is concluded that Jean suffered from a
kidney failure. It seems this was occurring long before today, but it was never noticed until now.
Im sorry to say that it is both Kidneys, if it was just one it would not have been a life threatening
situation, but in her case it is
Rosie cried out in devastated voice: Oh lord what have you brought upon us at this hour?
Sara surprised at what was stated, ask the doctor if she made a mistake and Dr. Kunu responded
Dr. Kunu: I know maam this is a hard thing to absorb but I promise you the faster the transplant
takes place the better chance of her living.
David shocked by what the doctor stated, slowly fall back into the chair in the corner in silence,
thinking how this was possible. After a few seconds of thinking to himself, David gathered
himself and put on a man face to consol Jean when she wakes up and pretty much his family
members.

Sara crying in the corner was the only one with the courage enough to ask how long Jean has left
to live, in between the crying and a shaky voice she asked:
Sara: Dr. Kunu, how long does my sister have now to live?
Dr. Kunu: Im sorry to say she has only six months or less, depending how long it takes to find a
matching kidney, I will give you guys time to talk among yourselves, but do know if you want
for us to put Jean on the waiting list a payment of $1000 must be made today. The faster the
payment the better chance of her finding an organ
David: Wait; there is no relative that can donate their kidney like her sister or mother for an
example?
Rosie: Ohhhh lord I guess when the say whatever is done in the dark shall come to light is true
Dr. Kunu: Actually David that is the first step we took by taking Rosie and Saras blood for DNA
testing, and it turns out that Rosie and Sara have similar DNA, but they are not a match for Jean
David: Wait doctor I do not understand
Dr. Kunu: Im sorry to tell you but Jean was adopted
Surprised and mad, David turn to Rosie
David: Rosie is the doctor correct because right now I dont know what to believe
Rosie a little afraid of the outcome dropped her head down and mumbled a yes
David: Sara you knew about this and never told me?
Sara: Jean promised us never to say anything, because she did not want to be reminded of her
past
Still a little angry, David quietly said not another word of this until Jean gets better, while
pulling out his check book and wrote a check for one thousand and handed it to the doctor once
he noticed Jean was waking up. Fully awake, David walked up to Jeans bedside and started
talking to her. Everybody including the doctor waited patiently.
David: Hey beautiful, how are you feeling?
Jean still a little out of it responded: I feel weak but I will survive. Jean looked around and
realizing where she was directed her attention to the doctor.
Jean: Hello doctor
Dr. Kunu: Hello Jean how are you feeling?

Jean: Im good just a little bit tired, but enough with all the small talks, what is wrong doctor?
Dr. Kunu: Well Im sorry to say but you have a kidney failure and will need a kidney transplant
Jean: Oh my goodness
Dr. Kunu: Dont panic your family has put you on the organ list, and once we have an organ we
will start your procedure
Jean: How long will that take?
Dr. Kunu: It depends on the time that we find an available organ
Jean: Okay thanks doctor, if you dont mind may I have some time with my family to talk
Dr. Kunu: Sure go ahead, okay I will be back to check on you in thirty minutes
Jean: Okay thanks
Once the doctor left Jean returned her attention to her family and started discussing her situation
Jean: Although you guys thought I was asleep, I heard everything the doctor and you all said, but
for now being that I was adopted, is not the situation, the problem is being able to obtain a
kidney before the six month that I have goes by
David: Whatever you want me to do; I will do just to get you back on your feet
Jean: I know and that is why I want you to please help me out with something
David: What is it my love?
Jean: I never thought I would ever say this, but I dont have that much time and so I must find
two kidneys before my time is up
Rosie: Ehhhhhhh Jean I know you are not saying what I think you are
Jean: Mommy please this is not the time, Im not about to die mom, I only have six month and
getting someone to sell their organ will not be a big deal if we are paying them at a high price,
plus with being involve in the black market I will get special treatment since Im paying them at
a high price.
Rosie: Jean do you hear yourself, how can you be so selfish, why not just pray and let the lord do
his will and stop worrying about your death. Do you not hear that people are getting killed in
China just to get organs and also those donors are not receiving the money that they were offered
in the first place? Either the middle man.
Sara: Wait mommy who is the middle man?

Rosie: Oh my child they are the people that allows there to be a transaction
Sara still a little confuse asked another question
Sara: What do you mean by that?
Rosie: I mean they are the guys that will find a recipient who paid a great amount of money the
organs need by placing advertisements that are mostly misleading, so that those that are poor can
come and sell their organs. Although the middleman tells the donors that they will receive $10,
000 dollars or so, they only end up having half of that where a part of that money is fake
Sara: Ohhh that is horrible
Rosie: Yes it is my child. Think of it like this pretty much, at the end of the day those poor people
were persuade or even threaten when they change their minds to sell their organs only to be poor
again and now with one less organ. This is why Jean I believe what you are doing is right and
plus if you trust in the Lord you shall conquer every obstacles that comes your way; even death,
if the Lord decides that
Sara: I agree with mom Jean this is wrong and you know it, but I will not get in your way of your
wants, but I do say think of the person you might put in danger, yes they might be poor an need
the money, but is it not better for them to earn it in a good way, then rather in the schemes of the
Black Market
Jean: Thank you Sara, but you are right this is my decision
David: Alright baby I know someone that can find us a donor and can set it up as if it was a
family member that you are getting the organ from
Jean: Okay perfect ask how much the transaction and how long everything will take
After several talk on the phone David came back to the room and started telling Jean what the
person said
David: The guy said that there is an organ available but it will cost us about $10,000
Jean: Okay set up the transaction
Sara: Jean are you serious, please dont go through with it listen to mom, and pray to the lord he
will help you out
Jean started crying and was all confuse about what she will do, she kept thinking and while she
was making a decision Dr. Kunu came into the room
Dr. Kunu: How is everyone doing?

The doctor noticed the tension in the room so she decided to go on and tell the good news
Dr. Kunu: I have good news, we found a match for Jean after a female with a similar DNA had a
fatal car accident, so Jean I will call a nurse in to transport you to the surgery room right away. It
is a fresh organ so the early the transplant the better
Jean: Ohh thank you so much
Rosie: You see Jean if you believe in the Lord, everything you ask shall be given to you
Jean: Yes mom and forgive me for being rude before, I will never doubt in the Lord again, and
David thanks for always being by my side, but no more black market, for today we will spare a
poor individual life
