10) Webinar: Do the Right Thing Culturally Responsive Health Care and the Federally Mandated CLAS
Standards
The time for culturally responsive health care is now. Not only is it the right thing to do, but key
elements are mandated by the federal CLAS standards (Culturally and Linguistically Appropriate
Services). There is also a strong business case for culturally responsive health care; it drives patient
satisfaction, helps improve outcomes, and brings a degree of economic viability to what is essentially an
unfunded mandate. Unfortunately, many healthcare organizations find themselves either unfamiliar
with the standards or lagging in the development and implementation of strategies for full compliance.
During this webinar, Health Management Associates Principal Dr. Jeff Ring makes the case for socially
responsive health care and shows organizations how to take the necessary steps to make it work for
their patients and their organization.

1) Heath literacy and pharmacists: The need is clear

1) Heath literacy and pharmacists: The need is clear

Soojin Juns desire to become a pharmacist stemmed from personal experience taking care of her dying
father, a Korean immigrant. Jun, PharmD, now a pharmacist at Aurora Healthcare in Wisconsin, was her
fathers primary caretaker during his long battle with esophageal cancer. He was also diagnosed with
diabetes and was left with a complicated medication regimen that needed to be managed closely. A
second, consecutive hypoglycemic episode landed him in the hospital, where he died suddenly.

1) Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Releases Report Called "Data for Health, Learning What Works"
Efforts to improve public health by collecting, analyzing, and sharing personal health data must first
address public concerns about privacy, transparency, and access, a report from the Data for Health
Advisory Committee, with support from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, recommends.
Based on "listening sessions" held in five cities as part of RWJF's Data for Health initiative, the report,
Data for Health, Learning What Works (90 pages, PDF), highlights insights, concerns, and ideas for how
to harness data to improve health, including worries about privacy, security, and the potential for
misuse. The report then details recommendations from the committee which includes public health
practitioners, physicians, healthcare researchers, health technology and informatics experts, consumers,
and representatives of local government aimed at addressing these and other issues. Key
recommendations include updating policies governing personal data to account for new technologies
and security risks; establishing a "Bill of Rights" for individuals to access their own health data; investing
in data-sharing infrastructure and networks that integrate health with social and community services;
and launching a pilot Code for America data analytics program that would help municipalities promote
and achieve greater transparency in the use of public health data. The report also calls for a broad public
awareness campaign about the benefits of data sharing; the creation of a community resource scorecard
that would provide information on how communities are doing and facilitate comparisons across
communities; and the use of data generated by social media to capture real-time local and national

health trends.

2) Study: Asian-American Financial Diversity Overlooked

Are Asian-Americans so very wealthy? Media reporting of late suggests a monolithic rise of AsianAmerican prosperity, but a new study breaks down financial data among the various sub-groups in the
Asian-American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) demographic to show a nuanced view of the various s
obstacles that face those who identify as AAPI.

3) New report: 2015 State of Black America - Save Our Cities, Education, Jobs + Justice
Now in its 39th edition, this report serves as a benchmark and source for thought leadership around
racial equality in America across economics (including employment, income and housing), education,
health, social justice and civic engagement.
