DPhiE wins Terp Thon for third consectutive year

Delta Phi Epsilon pairs up with Sigma Nu to raise more than $30,000 for childhood cancer

our years ago, Delta Phi Epsilon

senior Bri Russo founded Terpthon, a dance marathon, modeled
after Pennsylvania States Thon,
in which 100 percent of money
raised goes to the Childrens Miracle Network Hospitals to help cure
childhood cancer.
The past two years Delta Phi
Epsilon has paired up with the
brothers of the Sigma Nu fraternity
to raise money for Terp Thon. For
the past two years Delta Phi Epsilon and Sigma Nu has been the first
place fundraising team. In 2012 the
team fundraised just over $20,000
for the Childrens Miracle Network.
This year aspirations were
higher. Because a Delta Phi Epsilon alumna founded this organization, it was essential to keep up the
winning streak in 2013. The team

Sisters grow through academics

Sisterhood programming and academics combine

Sisterhood programming at
Delta Phi Epsilon is an outlet for
sisters to leave College Park and
bond through enjoyable activities.
Activities of the past have included
apple and pumpkin picking and iceskating.
This semester, senior Andrea
Fisher took over the sisterhood
programming chair position and
has set new standards for what
sisterhood programming means in
our chapter.

Fisher, along with the vice

president of academic affairs,

Ricki Spak, decided to use
sisterhood programming to enhance
scholarship, one of the five founding
values of Delta Phi Epsilon. Spak
and Fisher organized the 123-person
chapter into groups, according to
major or field of study, with one
or two freshman and at least three
upperclassmen of the same field.
The idea of this program is to
help freshman and sophomores with
any questions that they may have
about their field (cont on page 2)

Delta Phi Epsilon and Sigma Nu raised $34, 639.93 for the

The entire chapter had
a positive response to this
program, understanding that
because scholarship is one of
the five core values, sisters
should be open and willing
to help younger sisters on the

It was great to see the

New philanthropy event promotes body image

Fashion show event raises more than $3,000 for ANAD and promotes loving your body
With a major event for our fall
philanthropy wrapped up for the
year, our new Vice President of Programming, TJ Freedberg, decided it
was time to start a new tradition.
Delta Phi Epsilon has three national philanthropies: the Cystic
Fibrosis Foundation, the Delta Phi
Epsilon Education Foundation, and
ANAD, Anorexia Nervosa and Associated Disorders. The Delta Xi
chapter at the University of Maryland has always participated in national ANAD week every February,
which consisted of a bake sale, a
speaker or two and one other small
fundraiser that changed each year.
This year, Delta Phi Epsilon
took on the ambitious goal of holding an event as exciting as our Fall
Cystic Fibrosis event, Deepher
Dude. Freedberg, along with her
ANAD Chair, Loren McDaniels,
planned and executed the first annual ANAD Fashion Show.

The National Association of Anorexia Nervosa and Associated Disorders is a non-profit organization
that uses donations for treatment,
support, education, data and events.
The idea of this event was to encourage positive body images in a
fun manner that promotes self-confidence.
Fourteen fraternities and every
sorority signed up to cosponsor the
event and have members of their
chapters walk in the show. Clothing
donors to the fashion show included
Lily Pulitzer, the Pink Palm, Little
White Fashion Truck, Route One
Apparel, Cloud 9 and Stella and
Dot Jewelry. Georgetown Cupcakes
were also given out at the event.
On Feb
26, 2013 at 6:30
p.m. more than 300 people came
to Richie Coliseum to support the
cause. Tickets were sold for $5 a
person before the event and at the
door. The ANAD Fashion Show
