Concepts
Active Speech Level (dBm0)
This is a measure of the level (dBm0) of the subscribers speech. To ensure high understanding and listening comfort,
it is important that the received or sent speech level is optimal. Furthermore, the performance of different equipments in the speech path
varies depending upon the signal levels. Each active device, such as a
speech codec, has a certain dynamic range over which it functions to
specification. Automatic Level Control (ALC) is a useful solution to this
problem. It provides an effective, non-obtrusive means of improving the
perceived speech quality of a call by automatically optimizing active
speech levels. Active speech level information can be used for the
finding of the optimum settings for the ALC.

Context
Doubletalk
Echo Path Delay (ms) This is a round-trip delay of the electric echo from PSTN hybrid
circuit that MGW echo canceller (EC) detects. It is essential that echo
path delay matches the working delay window of MGW echo canceller.
By monitoring the echo path delay of each PSTN circuit, it can be
assured that the echo canceller works optimally, or in case of very long
PSTN links, the pre-delay setting of EC can be adjusted to compensate
the delays of long links.
Echo Return Loss (dB) This is a measure of the difference in power between the
callers speech level and the echo that comes back from the PSTN
hybrid circuit. The higher this value is, the lower the level of the echo
compared to the level of the speech, and the better the echo canceller
functions.
Egress
Frame Erasure Rate (%) This represents a percentage of received bad or lost speech
frames to the number of total speech frames. Traffica is able to monitor
both Total FER and Link FER. High FER values may indicate problems
in radio access network or in the backbone depending on the measured
termination.
Ingress
Inter Arrival Jitter This is a short term jitter calculated over the last packets of a call.
Inter arrival jitter gives an overview of the network level jitter trend as
there is a huge number of terminated calls in every second.
Mean Opinion Score In network quality testing, absolute category rating (ACR), listening only tests are typically applied to collect subjective responses of the
performance of telephone transmission systems. The responses on a
DN70497645

five-point scale are averaged to get the MOS score. Each number from
1 to 5 has been associated with a definition of audio quality, like poor
to excellent. A family of objective algorithms has been standardized in
ITU-T for objective evaluation of speech quality. Objective speech
quality measurement algorithms estimate subjective speech quality
obtained in ACR tests. Furthermore, ITU-T Recommendation P.564
specifies objective speech quality assessment models that predict the
impact of observed IP network impairments on the one-way listening
quality experienced by the end-user in IP-based telephony applications.
In NSN, these models have been expanded to allow MOS evaluation of
access interfaces as well as the backbone interfaces.
Noise Level (dB) This measures the level of background noise. High noise level is
very disturbing and can reduce the intelligibility of speech. To overcome
these issues and to improve overall speech intelligibility in noisy conditions, background noise level can be reduced in the speech signal with
Noise suppression (NS). NS is also useful in the network where there is
zero or only modest noise reduction in the mobile terminal.
Packet Loss
Peak to Peak jitter Maximum difference between the delays of two sequential packets
within a single call. NSN Rel-4 MGW provides a configurable jitter buffer
target fill to compensate for the jitter caused by the backbone. The jitter
buffer size is a trade off between the delay and the packet loss, i.e. a
small jitter buffer decreases the end to end delay but increases the
packet loss and vice versa.
Quantile Jitter
IP Packet delay variation within one single call. This gives an estimate
of the real jitter encountered by the jitter buffer. This value is useful for
subscriber specific troubleshooting.
Speech Activity Factor This is the ratio between the active speech time and the total
time elapsed during the call. It can be used as an aid for backbone
dimensioning since the average bit rate per call can be estimated from
codec information and its speech activity factor. Very high values may
also indicate corrupted audio data i.e. faulty channel. Low values may
indicate muted calls. Speech Activity Factor is calculated for both
ingress and egress directions.
Stable echo path model Stable echo path model means that the adaptive filter of the
echo canceller has converged adequately to the echo.
Structure of the Context ID The Length of a Context ID is 2XWORD. For example,
FFFF EEE The first word (FFFF in the above example) includes the
logical address of the ISU. The second word (EEEE in the above
example) includes the running number. It is the number reserved by
this context. It is a number from 0 to 65535.

If the number of the last created context was 13, and a new context was
reserved, its number will be 14.
Termination
VMGW
A physical MGW can be divided into several (max. 85) Virtual MGWs.
One interface signalling unit (ISU) can have a maximum of five VMGWs
configured.

There are three different report types based on the user plane interface type: MGW IP,
MGW ATM and MGW TDM report type.
The following interfaces are monitored:
See more information about report types, interfaces and corresponding available user
plane measurements in table Measurement validity.
For a more precise description of measurement data, see chapters RTT field descriptions and Measurement descriptions in this document.
Combining of MGW and MSC RTT Reports
There can be several MGW RTT User Plane Measurement Reports (MGW ATM, MGW
IP and MGW TDM) for one MSC Server CTX Report from the same context. This is
because MGW RTT Reports are sent per Termination, and MSC Server CTX Reports
are sent per Context.

Explanation
The active speech level parameter is calculated both before and after
the level control execution to get information about the operation of the
automatic level control (ALC). The active speech level is the root mean
square of the speech spurt amplitudes expressed in dBm. The active
speech level is the speech level averaged over speech spurt intervals
including any hangover time and does not include measurements
during conversational pauses.

Datatype in IDS
UINT16
Versions
U4.2
Explanation
Double talk is a condition whereby, for whatever reason, one conversant in a telephone connection starts talking before the other has finished. This is a naturally occurring phenomenon where one participant
wishes to interrupt the flow of speech from the other, but occurs more
frequently the greater the propagation time of the connection becomes.
Monitoring the occurrence of double talk provides a useful indicator
linked to customer perception of performance.

MGW_Packet_Loss_Ratio
Field name
MGW_Packet_Loss_Ratio
Datatype in IDS
UINT16
Versions
U4.2
Explanation
IP Packet Loss: IP packet loss ratio (PLR), as defined in, is the ratio of
total lost IP packet outcomes to total transmitted IP packets in a population of interest. It is expressed in %.
ATM Packet Loss: For ATM packets, the combined packet loss ratio of
both network and JBF can not be estimated reliably. This is due to the
fact that RTP time stamps and sequence numbers are not available for
the JBF and the JBF doesnt know whether packets are delayed due to
DTX use or because they have been lost. Therefore, ATM PLR is estimated straight from the packets dropped by the jitter buffer.

A predelay may
be needed in EC.
Predelay must no
be higher than
the lowest echo
path delay.
P.561,
P.562
If target value of 50
ms exceeded, there
may be audible
echo in PSTNPSTN calls without
ECs (see G.131). If
limit value is
exceeded, EC may
not cancel echo sufficiently. Range is
99 - 163 ms when
EC Predelay is set
to 99 ms. If measurement is unreliable, there's no
echo or echo path
delay exceeds EC's
echo path capacity.
Only reliable measurement is valid.
6 dB
P.561,
P.562,
G.168
G.168 EC supports
up to 6 dB ERL.
However NSN EC
works up to 0 dB
ERL. If ERL shows
a high value (>60
dB), either there's
no echo or echo
delay is not within
echo cancellation
window (high
double talk value
may indicate this).

Achieved ERLE
Measurement descriptions
The Echo Cancellation (EC) algorithm calculates two slowly varying estimates for the operation of the non-linear processing:
expected attenuation of the adaptive filters (Expected ERLE) and achieved attenuation of the adaptive filters (Achieved
ERLE).The difference of these two terms gives the non-linear echo present in the system, which cannot be cancelled by the
adaptive filter. If echo is not cancelled properly, possible non-linearities in the echo path can be verified by monitoring these
parameters.

Double talk
Double talk is a condition whereby, for whatever reason, one conversant in a telephone
connection starts talking before the other has finished. This is a naturally occurring phenomenon where one participant wishes to interrupt the flow of speech from the other,
but occurs more frequently the greater the propagation time of the connection becomes.
Monitoring the occurrence of double talk provides a useful indicator linked to customer
perception of performance. The amount of double talk is calculated as a percentage of
the measurement interval at the ALC module by comparing the VAD decision flags of
both directions. It should be noted that the measured double talk percentage differs from
the double talk experienced by both parties in the conversation due to the delay between
the user equipment and measurement point. Therefore the double talk measured at
MGW is roughly an average of the double talk experienced by the separate ends.

Echo path delay
Echo path delay, as specified in recommendation P.561, is the value from the reference
point of measurement to the peak absolute amplitude of the time domain impulse
response of the echo path. Note that this is not the same value (td) that is presented for
echo path delay in the ITU-T recommendation G.168. Echo dispersion time tdis and predelay tp are also presented.
In the EC User Plane Processing in MGW algorithm, H register (echo path impulse
response model of EC) has 64 ms of echo path capacity (between dashed lines in the
picture). In normal network conditions, the echo path delay is shorter than 64 ms and
the last elements of the H register contain comparatively less power than the total power
of the filter.
To calculate the actual echo path delay te, it is sufficient that the maximum absolute
value of the register H is searched. The echo path delay te, is then tp + y/8 ms, where y
is the index of the maximum value of the register H. Certain additional rules are used in
the calculations to make the measurement more reliable. For noise frames, for example,
a simple maximum search might give incorrect results.

Inter-arrival jitter
Inter-Arrival Jitter (RTP/RTCP-jitter) is calculated according to the principles in
RFC3550. Inter-Arrival Jitter is a smoothed estimate of the delay variance of successive
RTP packets. The packet delay variation (PDV) for a time instant (i) is calculated for two
consecutive packets.
As a wall clock time is not available in RTP packets, the PDV for packet (i) is calculated
from relative transit times: For ATM streams, the DSP internal reference clock is used
for the calculation of PDV: Finally, the Inter-Arrival Jitter is a smoothed estimate of PDV:
Inter-Arrival Jitter is a short term jitter that can control jitter buffer adaptation, for
example. It may not be suitable for jitter statistics, since a peak delay variation fades out
rapidly, and therefore it represents the jitter of the few last packets only, not the jitter of
the entire connection. However, the Inter-Arrival Jitter is usable for momentary jitter calculations. For example, short term changes in jitter behavior over a link can be monitored because multiple contexts are typically released at every moment on high speed
links. Inter-Arrival Jitter ranges from 0 ms to 250 ms at 1 ms resolution. Values of over
250 ms are indicated as >250 ms.
For information on other measurements, see table Measurement descriptions.

Invalid packets
A wrong payload in RTP Packet, or Comfort Noise is used even when it is not negotiated. This may indicate silent calls or bad quality (for example, Comfort Noise is not

MOS-NB
MOS score predicted for narrowband codecs using the methods presented in P.564.
MOS-NB is predicted with separate models for radio and non radio interfaces for each
codec and codec mode.
Prediction is based on the following processes.
1. Induce packet loss and radio impairments on speech samples (FER for each sample
known or calculated)
2. Calculate objective MOS scores (P.862.2) for the impaired speech samples
3. Calculate a model to predict P.862.2 scores from FER
In Traffica, the MOS-NB scores are based on the measured FER from the network.
MOS-NB scores are obtained by using the calculated model to map FER to MOS-NB.
For information on other measurements, see table Measurement descriptions.

MOS-WB
MOS score predicted for wideband codecs using the methods presented in P.564.
MOS-WB is prediceted with separate models for radio and non radio interfaces for each

FER from the network. MOS-WB scores are obtained by using the calculated model to
map FER to MOS-WB.

R value
ITU-T Specification G.107 E-Model is a useful tool to estimate the combined effects of
various transmission parameters. E-Model is recommended as the transmission
planning tool.
Transmission planning using the E-Model, provides a prediction of the expected quality,
as perceived by the user, for an investigated connection. The final result of any calculation with the E-Model is the E-Model Rating R.
The E-Model Rating R can be transformed into other quality measures, which are used
in transmission planning, such as Mean Opinion Score (MOS). The E-Model Rating R
can be converted to the following quality measures.
Subjective MOS listening speech quality calculated by a "Subjective Test" according to Recommendation P.800
Objective MOS measured listening speech quality, typically Recommendation
P.862/P.862.1/P.862.2.
Predicted MOS estimated conversational quality, recommendation G.107.
7.24
Saturation clipping
Saturation clipping is used to detect sample values that were too large for the current
digital system and were clipped as a result and may be heard as a distortion. Calculations are done before the ALC execution if adaptive gain mode or negative constant gain
is used and after ALC execution if constant positive gain is used. Each frame of 160
samples is considered clipped only if there are at least 20 clipped samples in the frame.
Finally the clipping percentage is calculated according to clipped frames.

Synch losts TC
Number of synch lost situations on uplink ater/abis. Synch lost counter is incremented
when 50 successive TRAU frames - with an uplink framing error (UFE) flag set - have
been sent towards the BTS (in case of FR, sync los counter is incremented once urgent
alarm pattern sending has been started). The counter is reset whenever three consecutive frames without the UFE flag have been sent. This simulates a situation when the
BTS sends a remote TC failure to the BSC. If HSCSD is in use, the synch lost counter
is also incremented if the number of the used HSCSD sub-channels decreases. Synch
lost counter is not incremented again until synch is found again and then lost again.
For information on other measurements, see table Measurement descriptions.
7.28
Time Offset
Time offset is a long-term timing variation in received packets that may eventually cause
jitter buffer overflows or underflows. This is typically due to a clock frequency offset
(clock skew) between the source and the receiver. A positive time offset value means
that the average packet transmission interval is shorter at the source than expected at
the receiver, i.e. the source clock has a higher frequency than the receiver clock. A high
time offset value indicates a clock skew between the source and the receiver, and may
have a negative impact on voice quality, especially when DTX is not used (wander compensations cannot solely be done during speech pauses).
For information on other measurements, see table Measurement descriptions.
