Ehmke,Rachel."GetInformed."TeensandSocialMedia.ChildMindInstitute,13Nov.
2013.Web.11Feb.2015.
This webpage article was written to explain how social media has
affected teenagers and gives advice to parents on how to

minimize the dangers that come from social media. Teens today
are constantly connected to the Internet and find it difficult to
disconnect for even a few minutes. One point the author made
was, Its not like it creates a nonverbal learning disability but it
puts everybody in a nonverbal disabled context, where body
language, facial expression, and even the smallest kinds of vocal
reactions are rendered invisible. This has caused teenagers to
become less social and uncomfortable speaking face-to-face. It is
much easier to text someone because you are allowed more time
to think of a response rather than speaking in person where you
are forced to react instantly. It also makes it easier to deal with
situations and conversations that would be awkward in person.
Because of this it had led to teenagers become too comfortable
behind a screen to where they partake in sexual activity. In this
article the author explains how many teens today are not
comfortable to participate in sexual activities in person with
someone, but are more than comfortable to participate in sexual
activity online with someone. This article explains different risk
that teenagers encounter because of social media and then
explains ways for parents to prevent things like teen depression,
stalking, and cyber bullying from happening to their child.
Because of the breakdown of these topics I will use this in my
paper to add facts about how social media affects teenagers.

This scholarly article, written by Caroline Moss, was written to
back up a blog post from Andrew Watt on Medium. In this she
peeled out interesting facts about what teenagers think of social
media according to Watt (a teenager himself). He breaks his blog
into categories of popular social media sites that teenagers
frequently use for example: Facebook, Instagram, Twitter,
Snapchat, and many others. As for Facebook he says, "It's dead to
us. Facebook is something we all got in middle school because it was cool but
now is seen as an awkward family dinner party we can't really leave. It's weird
and can even be annoying to have Facebook at times. That being said, if
you don't have Facebook, that's even more weird and annoying. This statement I
completely agree with. Teenagers use this site mostly to upload pictures so that
long-lost relatives can see what they are up to. For me I never used Facebook until
I came to college. Facebook, for me, is a way for my sorority to communicate
information to the entire chapter. It is an organized way to contact multiple
people. As for Instagram that is the place for my generation to post without the
fear of parents, grandparents, and any other old person from seeing them. That
being said it also adds more pressure to impress your friends and peers. You can
say that you dont care about how many likes you got on a picture or video but
deep down everyone feels excited when they get a high number of likes or have a

lot of followers. Teens use this to connect with other teens and in a way allows for
creativity. Rarely do users post a picture without editing it in some way or even
slapping a filter on it. I found this article to be very helpful and I will use it in my
paper to describe how teenagers view social media.
