Clearance Guide
For the protection of yourself and patients, there are a number of requirements that need to be completed prior to
participation in clinical courses. Each semester has a date by which all requirements must be completed in order to be
eligible to participate in a clinical course during that semester.
Clinical clearance is managed by the School of Nursings O ce of Student Services in Ackerson Hall on the Newark
Campus. While school is in session, there is also a representative of Student Services in our New Brunswick building
from Tuesday to Thursday. If you ever have questions please always feel free to walk in to the O ce of Student Services

Timeframe: 1 2 Weeks
All students are required to have a criminal background check through CertiedBackground prior to being allowed to
participate
in
clinicals.
To
order
your
criminal
background
check,
go
to
h ps://www.certiedbackground.com, enter RU38 as your program code, click Go, and then complete all required
information. To order your urine drug screening, repeat the process using RU38dt as the program code. Your results
will be provided to the O ce of Student Services directly.
Hepatitis B:
Required: A record of a completed 3 dose immunization series or a titer showing immunity.
Timeframe: Up to 6 months
Varicella:
Required: A record of a completed 2 dose immunization series or a titer showing immunity.
Timeframe: Up to 1 month
Note:
Having had the chicken pox in the past is not su cient for this requirement. A statement
from your physician that you have had chicken pox in the past *will not* be accepted.
Tetanus/Diphtheria/Pertussis:
Required: A record of receiving an Adult Tdap vaccine in the last 10 years.
Timeframe: One day
Note:
If you have never had the Tdap vaccine one dose is required even if you have had a Td
vaccine within the last 10 years.
Physician certication:
Required: Physician certication of good health
Timeframe: One day
Note:
All students that participate in clinicals must undergo an annual physical exam and have
their physician certify that they are in good health, free from communicable diseases, and
able to function in clinical classes without restriction.
TB Testing:
Required:
2 step PPD OR FDA approved blood assay for TB. Each following year you must have an
annual PPD test OR blood test. If you receive a positive result, a record of the date and result
of your X Ray is required. If your X Ray indicates tuberculosis infection, a record of the date
of treatment is required.
Timeframe: Up to 3 weeks
Note:
If you fulll this requirement with annual PPD testing, make sure that your annual PPD
tests are within 12 months from your previous test. If you wait longer than 12 months, you
will need to take a 2 step PPD test again.
Flu:
Required: Proof of having received the seasonal Inuenza vaccine, or a signed declination form.
Timeframe: One day
Note:
All students must present proof of having received the u vaccine or must submit a
declination form to be cleared for clinicals. Due to availability of the vaccine, students
preparing for fall clinicals do not need to submit u vaccination documentation until
October. Emails are sent out in September of each year with specic due dates.
