APTE 6608: ELECTRICITY GENERATION

and TRANSMISSION

S1/2015

THE NATIONAL NZ ELECTRICITY

TRANSMISSION GRID
PRACTICAL PROJECT 1 (alternatives)

INSTRUCTIONS
Refer to any applicable Standard, Text, or Publication to complete this assignment.
( Library Texts: Freris & Infield, 'Renewable energy in power systems' ; Sioshansi (Ed.) 'Generating
electricity in a carbon-constrained world')

TOPIC 1: (Alternatives to the erection of additional Transmission Lines)

Grid Company calls for answers
Transpower is asking for anyone with ideas that could delay the need for new power
lines into Auckland to come forward.
As owner and operator

of the national electricity grid, Transpower is planning up to $1.5

billion of new investment. But before it can be approved, it needs to assure the
Electricity Commission there is not a better way of doing the job. So it has publicly
asked for possible "non-transmission" alternatives for meeting the rapidly increasing
demand in Auckland and Northland. This could include new power stations or ways of
reducing peak demand. Instead of big power stations and long transmission lines, there
is an increasing trend towards smaller generators, built closer to where the electricity is
actually needed.
The above extract from the NZ HERALD indicates the need for radical future plans to
alleviate the very real problem we are faced with in New Zealand. Address this problem,
by providing an answer to Transpower, to complete this assignment.
Hand the printed Report (1500 words minimum / 2000 words maximum) to the
lecturer in person for marking no later than 16 April 2015. Since this course is one of
two 15 credit subjects to be completed in one semester, no extension can be allowed.
This assignment will be marked out of a hundred, and will make up 15% of the total
mark for this course as a whole. Show all references to the legislation and other text
used. Neatness, accuracy, detail, and relevance are important aspects for this
assignment. The word count must be printed on the front page of the report.
